Chapter Forty-One — The Queen the City Created

Chapter Thirty-One — The First King

The rooftop stairwell exploded upward before anyone could answer.

Concrete shattered violently outward.

Children below screamed through the cathedral floors.

And something climbed into the rain.

The First King looked human only in the cruelest possible way.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Black tactical restraints hanging torn from pale scarred skin.

Black veins covered almost half his body twisting beneath flesh like poison roots while

silver metal implants glinted along his spine and jaw beneath the acid rain.

But his eyes—

God.

Empty.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Gone.

Like humanity had been hollowed out and survival left behind.

The King lifted his head slowly.

Then stared directly at Avery.

The poison inside her surged violently.

Recognition.

The King smiled.

Avery’s blood turned ice cold.

Because the expression looked wrong.

Like someone who learned how from memory instead of emotion.

Silas whispered softly:

“Oh, that’s upsetting.”

The King took one step forward.

The rooftop cracked beneath his weight.

Blaine moved instantly between him and Avery.

The King stopped.

Silver eyes met silver eyes.

Mirror images.

Avery physically stopped breathing.

No.

The realization hit all at once.

The Kings weren’t monsters because they were different from Blaine.

They were what Blaine could’ve become.

The King tilted his head slightly while staring at him.

“Asset Morana.”

The voice sounded distorted.

Broken.

Like language itself hurt.

Blaine’s posture sharpened dangerously.

“I’m not an asset.”

The King blinked slowly.

Confused.

Then:

“Defective.”

The word echoed exactly like Luciano used it.

Conditioning buried so deep even these creatures still repeated it.

Avery’s chest tightened painfully.

They never escaped the program.

Not mentally.

The King’s gaze shifted toward Avery.

Instantly the poison reacted.

Black ivy exploded across the rooftop walls while the air itself thickened around her.

The King inhaled sharply.

Then smiled wider.

“There.”

Fear slid down Avery’s spine.

“What does that mean?”

The King took another slow step forward.

The poison beneath Avery’s skin pulsed harder.

Not violent.

Calling.

The King looked almost reverent now.

“Queen.”

Silence.

The rooftop froze.

Even the riots below suddenly felt distant.

Silas stared openly.

The operative looked horrified.

Blaine’s expression went lethal instantly.

“No.”

The King ignored him completely.

Those empty silver eyes remained fixed on Avery.

“Queen returned.”

The poison surged violently through the rooftop ivy in response.

No no no—

Avery physically stepped backward.

“I’m not your queen.”

The King looked confused again.

Like the concept itself didn’t make sense.

“The poison chose.”

Blaine moved first.

Knife flashing silver through acid rain straight toward the King’s throat—

The First King caught the blade barehanded.

Effortlessly.

The rooftop cracked beneath the impact.

And then the creature looked at Blaine with something horrifyingly close to pity.

“You still protect things,” the King whispered.

The sentence hollowed the air.

Because somehow beneath all the conditioning, all the mutilation — the King remembered

Blaine too.

Rain poured harder.

Acid hissed across cathedral stone while the First King stood motionless beneath the

skyline countdown staring at Avery like she was something sacred.

Queen returned.

The words echoed sickly through her pulse.

No.

Absolutely not.

Avery stepped backward again while black ivy twisted violently across the rooftop in

response to her fear.

“I’m not your queen.”

The King watched her carefully.

Not aggressive.

Not confused anymore.

Certain.

“The poison recognizes itself.”

Blaine ripped his knife free and immediately positioned himself between Avery and the

King again.

Protective.

Instinctive.

The First King looked at him almost sadly.

“You survived wrong.”

The sentence hit harder than the blade ever could.

Avery saw it immediately — the tiny flicker behind Blaine’s eyes.

Pain.

Because surviving wrong implied there had been a correct way to become a monster.

Silas stepped beside Avery slowly, blades lowered but ready.

“Well,” he murmured softly, “this is psychologically devastating.”

Nobody acknowledged him.

The King took another slow step forward.

The rooftop groaned beneath his weight.

“The city is dying,” he said quietly. “The Queen must descend.”

The poison inside Avery reacted sharply to the words.

Not obedience.

Recognition.

God.

The Kings weren’t controlled by Luciano anymore.

They were connected to the poison itself.

Connected to her.

The realization hollowed her out.

Blaine noticed immediately.

“Avery.”

Fear flickered beneath his calm now.

Real fear.

Not of the King.

Of losing her.

The First King tilted his head watching Blaine carefully.

“You fear separation.”

The poison curled sharply around Avery’s wrists.

The King inhaled slowly.

Then softly:

“That is why she stabilized you.”

Silence crashed across the rooftop.

The compatibility.

The poison.

The bond.

The Kings understood it instinctively.

More instinctively than the humans who created Black Vein ever had.

Avery’s pulse stumbled violently.

Blaine’s jaw tightened hard enough muscle shifted beneath skin.

“Enough.”

The King ignored him.

“The poison evolves through attachment.” Empty silver eyes remained fixed on Avery. “It

chose connection instead of consumption.”

Luciano engineered isolation.

Fear.

Obedience.

But the poison adapted differently.

Through trust.

Protection.

Love.

The realization finally clicked completely into place.

Avery wasn’t becoming a monster.

She was becoming the thing Black Vein failed to erase from humanity.

Silas muttered softly beside her:

“Oh. That’s almost poetic.”

The skyline countdown burned lower.

01:09:44

Time was running out.

Children still hid below them.

The city still panicked.

Luciano still prepared to poison millions.

And standing before them the First King waited like a messenger from the grave.

“The Crown Protocol cannot be stopped from outside,” the King said quietly.

Blaine stiffened instantly.

“What?”

“The vault requires poison authorization now.”

Cold slid through Avery instantly.

Not Black Vein authorization.

Her.

The poison already integrated itself into the city systems deeper than anyone realized.

Luciano wasn’t just activating the Crown Protocol.

He was baiting her into the heart of the city.

The King looked directly at Avery again.

“You must descend beneath House Moretti.”

Silence.

Then softly:

“No,” Blaine said.

The answer came immediately.

Violently.

The King finally looked toward him fully.

“She belongs to the poison now.”

“No.” Blaine stepped closer dangerously. “She belongs to herself.”

Something changed in the King’s empty expression then.

Tiny.

Broken.

Memory.

Like the sentence reached some buried human fragment still trapped inside him.

The rooftop trembled violently again.

Far below them deeper beneath Poison City other roars answered.

The remaining Kings were waking.

Silas looked toward the skyline with visible irritation.

“You know, most cities just have traffic problems.”

Avery barely heard him.

Her eyes remained fixed on Blaine.

On the way he stood in front of her like he’d fight the entire poisoned city barehanded

before letting it consume her too.

And suddenly she understood something awful — he would.

He would burn himself alive protecting her if she let him.

No.

Not again.

Not another boy destroyed trying to save her.

Avery stepped forward slowly.

The ivy parted around her feet instantly.

Blaine’s expression sharpened.

“Avery.”

“We don’t have time.”

“There has to be another way.”

“Maybe.” Her throat tightened painfully. “But people are going to die while we search for

one.”

Silence.

Rain streamed down Blaine’s face while skyline fires reflected silver in his eyes.

For the first time since meeting him he looked helpless.

Avery’s chest physically hurt seeing it.

The poison curled softly around her hands.

Waiting.

Calling her deeper into the city beneath itself.

The Queen returned.

No.

Not queen.

Not weapon.

Not asset.

Avery looked toward the riots below.

The children hidden in the cathedral.

The names buried beneath Poison City for decades.

Then she looked back at Blaine.

And softly achingly she whispered:

“If this city wants a monster…”

Black ivy exploded outward across the cathedral rooftop beneath the acid rain like living

wings.

Avery’s silver-black eyes lifted toward the burning skyline.

“…then let it choke on one.”
