Chapter 8
MEAGAN
The negotiation ended on the kitchen floor, and Evan Kincaid fits his hand around the back of my neck.
His palm covers the base of my skull. His thumb traces the line where my jaw meets my throat, unhurried, the touch of someone who has spent weeks deciding exactly where to begin.
The conspiracy documentation fans out around us on the hardwood.
The Connors papers crinkle under my knee when I shift toward him, and neither of us reaches to move them.
Fingers thread into the hair I freed from the pencil, and the grip tightens. The tightness is a question. My breath answers it before my mouth does, a hitch low in my chest that I don't bother suppressing because suppression would be a lie, and I just told this man I wanted the real version.
"Stand up," he says. The two words come out in the register I first heard in the gala corridor, the one that settles at the base of my spine and stays there.
I stand. He follows, rising with an ease that belies the day he spent driving to Indianapolis and back. His chest is level with my forehead. His hand is still on my neck.
The papers stay where they are. Arthur's operation, mapped in routing paths and subsidiary filings, abandoned on the hardwood by two people who have run out of reasons to pretend.
His free hand settles on my hip through the sweater.
The grip anchors me without pulling, and the care behind it registers as warmth rather than pressure.
His thumb traces the ridge of bone above my waistband, a slow arc that tracks the same path twice.
He is learning the shape of me the way he learns everything: completely.
I reach for the collar of his shirt. The dark fabric carries the heat of his body, concentrated at the base of his throat where his pulse is visible and faster than I expected.
The collar is open, the sleeves pushed to his forearms. He came straight here from Indianapolis without stopping to change.
I press two fingers to his pulse. The count is elevated. The armor he wears over every interaction we have ever had is thinning from the inside, and the proof is beating under my fingertips.
"Your pulse is up," I say.
"Observant." His voice has dropped. The dry edge is still there, barely, the last remnant of the professional register holding on.
"I'm always observant."
"I know." He leans down. His mouth stops close enough that I feel the shape of the next word before he says it. "It's the most dangerous thing about you."
His lips land on the line of my jaw instead of my mouth.
The contact is light, barely pressure, tracing the bone from my ear to my chin with an attention that makes the skin underneath feel like new territory.
His breath settles at the corner of my mouth, close enough that the next word would land on my lips, and he holds there, waiting, letting me close the distance or not.
I turn my head the fraction of an inch that eliminates the gap.
He kisses the way he operates: controlled entry, deliberate escalation, and then the discipline fractures.
The hand in my hair tightens, pulling my head back to change the angle.
The groan that comes out of him is involuntary, scraped from somewhere underneath the fixer who drove back from Indianapolis because the alternative was spending a night without being in this room.
The sound vibrates through my teeth and settles between my ribs.
My fingers close on the fabric of his shirt and pull.
He walks me backward. The kitchen transitions to the hallway in a few steps, the hallway to the bedroom in a few more.
His hands never leave my body during the transit.
One stays in my hair. The other slides to the small of my back, palm flat through the sweater, radiating into the same vertebrae the November cold hit through the open back of a black dress at a gala that feels like it happened to someone else.
The bedroom door is already open. The elevated track is dark outside the window, no train, no light sweeping the ceiling.
The only illumination comes from the hallway behind us, casting his shadow forward into the room so that I step into the darkness of him before I step into the darkness of the space.
He stops at the edge of the bed. His hands go to the hem of my sweater and pause.
"Tell me what you want," he says. The instruction is stripped of performance. He is asking because the answer matters to him in a way that extends past the physical, and the cost of the asking is visible in the set of his face.
"I want your hands on me," I say. "Without the control."
The sentence lands. His jaw shifts, the tell I’ve been reading since the first night at the Cultural Center, and what moves through his expression is recognition: permission granted to stop holding, and the calculation of what letting go will cost.
He pulls the sweater over my head. The air hits bare skin and his hands follow, both of them, spanning my ribcage with a grip that is wider, less patient than the rationed almost-touches of the last several weeks.
His thumbs press into the curve below my breasts, and the pressure sends a line of sensation down the center of my body that is direct and unambiguous.
"You're shaking," he says.
"I'm not cold."
"I know you're not cold." His lips press to the spot below my ear where my pulse runs fast and visible. He doesn't kiss it. He holds there, breathing, and the intimacy of being measured by someone who reads bodies for a living sends a second tremor through my ribcage that I refuse to suppress.
My hands go to the buttons of his shirt, working them open and pushing the fabric off his shoulders. The body underneath is lean, defined, carrying the kind of muscle that comes from use rather than maintenance.
A scar runs along his left side below the ribs, old enough that the tissue is smooth and white, and my fingers are on it before my brain registers the decision to touch.
He flinches. The reaction is micro, reflexive, gone before it fully arrives.
I caught it because I catch everything, and the flinch tells me more about who he is than any file or corridor conversation ever could.
I trace the scar. He lets me. His hands go still on my ribcage while I map the length of it, the same checked stillness from the doorframe, from the loaded pauses where he held himself back.
Except now the alternative is here, and his hands resume their path with a hunger that has been caged for so long that the release of it changes the temperature between us.
The bra unclasps under steady fingers. The efficiency of the motion should be clinical and registers as the opposite: total focus applied to me, and only me, since before I understood the scope of it.
My jeans and underwear are next. His follow. The boots take longer, and I sit on the edge of the bed while he pulls them off, watching the muscles in his back work while he bends.
He straightens and turns, and the look on his face when he sees me sitting on my own bed in the light wash from the hallway stops my breathing for a count of three.
Desire has been present in every room we've shared.
This is something underneath it, rawer, the expression of a man seeing the thing he's been circling for weeks without the barriers that made the circling survivable.
He lowers himself over me, and the first press of his bare chest to mine lights up every inch of contact from my collarbone to my navel.
He is hot. The temperature coming off him is unreasonable, concentrated where his chest flattens my breasts and where the hard length of him presses along the crease of my inner thigh.
His weight settles across his forearms on either side of my head, pressing me into the mattress without trapping me.
He is heavy enough to feel and careful enough to leave room for my body to move under his.
The power dynamic is here, in the breadth of his shoulders above me and the grip on my thigh, and the space inside it is mine.
I use it. My hips roll up into him. The friction drags a groan from his throat that is low, unplanned, so far past any pretense of calm that the last distance between who he shows the world and who he actually is collapses in real time.
His mouth drops to my collarbone, then lower.
He kisses the curve of my breast with the same focused attention he gave my pulse, and when his lips close over my nipple the sensation is sharp enough to arch my back off the mattress.
He doesn't rush. His tongue circles, draws, and the suction is firm enough to make my fingers tighten in his hair.
He gives the other breast the same treatment, his thumb rolling over the wet skin he just left while his mouth takes the second, and the dual sensation sends a line of heat straight through my core.
His mouth keeps moving. Down the center of my stomach, across the ridge of my hip, lips tracing the same bone his thumb mapped when I was still wearing the sweater.
Every kiss is unhurried, and the patience of it is driving me out of my skin because I know where he's headed and he is taking his time getting there.
A hand slides between my thighs. Two fingers part me, stroking through the slick with a slow thoroughness that makes my hips jerk.
He circles my clit with his thumb while his fingers press inside me, curling forward, and the combined pressure builds a knot of sensation low in my belly that tightens with every measured stroke.
My legs fall open wider. The response is instinctive, my body answering a question my mind is still processing, and whatever was left of his self-possession dissolves when he registers how wet I am, how ready, how far past pretense this has already gone.
His forehead drops to my collarbone. His breath comes rough while his fingers work me with focused, patient intensity. The first thing he does in this bed will be thorough.
