Chapter Twenty

Rhazek

The bond tears.

Pain detonates through my chest, string by string, nerve by nerve. The mark over my heart burns white. The handprint on my forearm opens like a fresh wound, gold light spilling through my skin.

I hit the sealed wall hard enough to crack living metal.

The Black Star screams.

“Open,” I snarl.

The Black Star’s voice comes broken through the corridor. “Unable. Foreign incision. Route severed.”

“Elara!”

No answer.

I drive my claws into the seam and pull.

“Rhazek!”

Jorren hits me from the side.

We slam into the opposite wall. He locks both arms around my chest from behind and digs his heels into the floor.

“Think,” he snaps.

I throw him off.

He hits the corridor hard, rolls, and comes up with blood at his mouth and a blade in his hand.

“Think,” he says again.

“Elara is gone. If you tear through the ship blind, she stays gone.”

My hand stops before I strike again.

“Seal this deck,” I say.

The Black Star answers immediately. “Deck partially sealed. Inner medical route compromised. Dock spine breached. Communications damaged.”

“Repair communication priority.”

“Attempting.”

“Track her.”

The walls pulse unevenly.

“Protected lifeform signal disrupted.”

Jorren steps closer, careful but not afraid. “Disrupted is not absent.”

I turn to the sealed wall. “Black Star. Show me last route.”

The corridor display flickers. Static tears across it before a partial map appears: inner medical route, unauthorized incision, narrow transit path spliced between The Black Star and Vonn Akra’s old sublevel network.

“Secure Nima and Maiven.”

Maiven, still supporting Nima, says sharply, “I am not the priority.”

“You are council witness and political leverage against Varesh. Nima is Elara’s chosen person. Both of you are priorities.”

Nima blinks slowly, fighting the sedative. “Elara?”

“I’m going after her,” I tell Nima.

Nima’s eyes fill. “He took her.”

“Yes.”

“Get her back.”

“Yes.”

Seryn’s voice breaks through the comm. “Where is Elara?”

“Taken,” I say.

“Status of Nima?” she asks.

“Sedated. Breathing. Maiven holds her.”

“I am coming.”

“Stay with Kavren and the controlled humans. Send a medical team here.”

“No one enters alone,” I add. “Sedative filters mandatory.”

The comm cuts.

The Black Star’s display flickers again.

“Foreign vessel departing lower cliff route,” the ship says.

“Show me.”

The wall resolves into a broken exterior scan.

A small shadow craft moves through the storm-dark between shield layers, cloaked in mineral interference from the old birth tunnels.

“Track it,” Jorren says. “She needs us smarter than him.”

“Track, do not fire,” I say.

The Black Star answers, “Tracking compromised by mineral interference.”

“Then use bond signature.”

“No stable lock.”

The torn bond twists under my ribs. I reach for the thread and feel one pulse answer.

Jorren’s hand catches my shoulder.

I do not throw him off this time.

“She is alive,” I tell Jorren.

The shadow craft vanishes from the display.

“Where would he take her?” Jorren asks.

“Part of his plan is at Kharon’s Wake,” I say. “But we need the route out of the tunnels.”

“Show sublevel routes,” I command.

The Black Star pulls Vonn Akra data through the damaged link. The map sputters, then steadies. Old tunnels branch beneath the fortress like black veins. Several lead to cliff exits. One to the lower launch shaft. Three to sealed birth chambers.

I expand a dark route the system cannot read. “Old evacuation tunnel. It reaches a launch chamber under the northern ridge.”

The Black Star interrupts. “Power source detected in northern ridge.”

“Send teams to all visible exits,” I say. “No one enters dead zone until I arrive.”

“I’m coming with you,” Jorren says.

Maiven’s voice cuts in from behind us. “Warlord.”

I turn.

She has lowered Nima carefully to the floor against the wall. A medical drone is already beside them, filter field active. Maiven’s face is pale but composed.

Maiven says, “Let me establish the abduction in council record before Varesh uses it to demand custody when you recover her.”

“What do you propose?” I ask.

“Veyl markers, controlled captives, hidden infrastructure,” she continues. “The exact emergency he tried to manufacture.”

“You transmit nothing,” she adds. “Speaking in this state will help their claim that you are compromised.”

“Send your transmission,” I say.

I send her to protected command with Nima and a medical escort, then descend with Jorren.

Six Black Star warriors and four Vonn Akra guards follow us into the sublevels. Our filters hiss in the sedative residue.

The first sublevel gate stands open.

The gold script around it flickers.

Maternal authority absent. Emergency pursuit active.

We move through.

The stairs curve down into mineral dark.

Silver roots glow through the ceiling like veins under translucent skin. The walls pulse under my hand when I touch them.

The first chamber is empty.

The second chamber contains two unconscious implanted humans bleeding near a broken node. Seryn’s medical drone stops to treat them.

We reach the red map chamber from her dream. The dead drone lies beside the doorway.

The floor map glows under our boots. Beneath the line to Kharon’s Wake, another route leads down through the old ridge tunnel.

The cradle frame stands open at the far wall.

Sarkan has grafted restraints, sedative ports and an adult compliance interface onto the old Dravari cradle.

My claws close around the frame.

I tear the grafted machinery apart. Restraint arms snap. Sedative lines tear. The compliance ring crushes between my palms. I leave the old white cradle base untouched.

“Scan for Elara’s blood,” I say.

The Black Star’s mobile node hovers forward.

Light sweeps the floor.

“Human blood trace detected.”

“How much?” I ask the node.

“Minimal. Superficial.”

It projects a glow beside the cradle frame.

There, on the edge of a broken restraint, is a smear of red.

Beside it, scratched into the white mineral base with something sharp, are three letters.

N Y X

“She left us something to search,” I say.

Jorren studies the letters. “A route?”

“Black Star. Search human salvage databases for NYX. Cross-reference transfer points near Kharon’s Wake and the northern ridge.”

The ship answers through static. “Scanning.”

A point appears beyond the debris field, half-hidden in moon shadow.

“Unregistered micro-jump aperture detected,” The Black Star says. “Designation in human salvage databases: Nyx Gate.”

“Where does Nyx Gate lead?” I ask.

“Unknown. Aperture unstable. Last recorded human salvage rumor links to abandoned war-zone stations beyond Rill Belt.”

“Warlord,” one of the guards says from the chamber entrance. “Movement in lower tunnel.”

Jorren turns.

“Veyl?”

“Unknown.”

A voice rises from the darkness beyond the chamber.

“Rhazek Vonn!”

Jorren curses.

Varesh enters with six royal guards behind him and Councilor Therak at his side. His robes are armored at the throat and cuffs. His face is pale with anger or fear. Possibly both.

“Where is she?”

“Taken through the ridge route,” I say.

Varesh’s face tightens. “By whom?”

“Sarkan.”

“Did you give him the route?” I ask.

Varesh’s jaw sets. “No.”

Maiven’s voice reaches us through the comm before I can step closer.

“Council record transmission sent. Emergency removal review suspended pending abduction investigation.”

“I authorized historical consultation regarding sovereign protection infrastructure,” Varesh says stiffly.

Varesh lifts a hand to still his guards. “I did not authorize an abduction.”

Varesh looks toward the destroyed frame. “I wanted her secured before worse hands reached her.”

“No. You helped the worse hands reach her so she would choose yours.”

Varesh’s mouth tightens. “If the starborn heir survives this, then history will judge whether—”

I cross the chamber before the last word leaves his mouth.

My hand closes around Varesh’s throat and drives him against the wall beside the old cradle.

“Do not,” I say softly, “speak of the heir while Elara Quinn is in Sarkan’s hands.”

“Rhazek,” Jorren says behind me.

Smarter.

My grip loosens by one fraction.

“I have her refusal in every record you tried to override,” I say.

Therak lowers his staff. “The abduction must take priority, High Councilor.”

I release Varesh.

He catches himself against the wall, one hand at his throat.

I turn to Jorren. “We are done here.”

He nods and signals the warriors.

Therak’s staff strikes the floor once.

Therak’s face is hard. “I support recovering Elara Quinn before men who failed her debate custody over what remains.”

I incline my head to Therak. “Hold them while we pursue.”

We run.

The Black Star pulls every available system toward launch. The docking spine shakes as old shield clamps release. Vonn Akra opens above us.

“Nyx Gate destination unknown,” The Black Star warns as we climb back toward her. “Risk to vessel significant.”

“Prepare pursuit.”

When we reach the dock, Seryn is waiting at the hatch with blood on her sleeves and fury in every line of her body.

“Kavren?” I ask.

“Alive. Nima stable. Controlled humans sedated and under guard. The Mercy Ark survivors are in the sealed recovery wing with citadel guards and our medical team. Varesh is an idiot.”

“Elara?”

I send Seryn the Nyx Gate coordinates. “Her bond signal is still there.”

“Royal escorts are moving to block the launch corridor,” Jorren reports as he boards.

The Black Star’s hatch seals.

The Black Star launches.

The citadel drops beneath us. The silver forest blurs. The black sea opens wide under the cliff. Then Nyxara falls away as The Black Star climbs like a blade thrown into the sky.

“Warn them to move,” I tell Jorren. He sends it, but the escorts hold their line.

The lead vessel opens a channel. Varesh’s voice is not on it. Another commander speaks, formal and stupid.

“Black Star, you are ordered to hold position pending council review of—”

“Nonlethal disablement,” I order.

The Black Star fires.

Three precise pulses disable their propulsion. The Black Star threads through the gap before their weapons can lock.

Nyxara’s atmosphere falls behind us.

“Warlord,” Jorren says quietly. “Nyx Gate opening.”

The star map splits.

A black aperture blooms beyond the red moon, rimmed in unstable gold.

Seryn’s voice comes from the rear station. “If Elara is sedated, bond distress may spike during jump.”

“Can she survive it?”

“I do not know.”

“Then we make the jump clean,” I say.

I brace at the rail as we dive toward the aperture.

The Black Star enters Nyx Gate.

The stars rip open.
