Chapter Twenty-Four
Rhazek
Sarkan Veyl asks for Elara four times before second light.
He does not receive her.
High containment aboard The Black Star was designed for warlords, treasonous commanders, and things with too many teeth to be called prisoners without insulting language.
It is buried near the ship’s armored spine, surrounded by three rings of living metal, two stun fields, and one old command seal that answers only to my blood.
Sarkan kneels inside the center field with both wrists fixed apart in gravity locks. His broken wrist is stabilized at Seryn’s insistence.
His white hair hangs loose around his face. Elara’s bite mark is sealed but visible on his hand.
Jorren stands beside me outside the containment field, arms folded, face expressionless. Behind us, The Black Star watches through every wall. Seryn watches through a medical feed because she does not trust me, Sarkan, or life in general. Reasonable.
Sarkan smiles when I enter.
“How does the mother fare?” he asks.
“Elara Quinn rests,” I say.
“You remain alive because she wanted evidence.”
“You imagine I fear record?” he asks.
“No. I imagine you fear irrelevance.”
“I am here for your testimony,” I say.
“You have my controlled humans, my route, my restraints, my sedative systems. My failed escape.”
“And Varesh’s role in it.”
“You will testify before council record that Varesh gave you historical access to Vonn Akra’s old sovereign protection routes.”
Sarkan laughs.
“No.”
“You will.”
“Or?”
“Or I release your medical logs.”
“Elaborate,” he says.
I gesture, and The Black Star projects a sealed Veyl archive file between us.
Sarkan Veyl: reproductive viability decline. Bond-marker nonresponse. House Veyl heir probability: critical extinction.
Sarkan’s face turns blank.
“Enough,” Sarkan says.
“Your own house has no living chamber that answers you. You wanted Elara to wake your line.”
“You know nothing,” he says.
“You built a cradle into a restraint frame beneath another male’s citadel.”
He lunges.
The locks hold, wrenching his broken wrist. Jorren watches him fight for composure.
Sarkan looks at him. “Loyal dog.”
“You are chained to the floor after being beaten by a pregnant medic with a supply-room tool,” Jorren says. “I can survive your opinion.”
“You will not release those logs.”
“They are private sovereign medical records.”
“So is Elara’s pregnancy.”
“Privacy seems to matter more when the body belongs to a lord.”
“You will testify,” I continue, “or the council learns exactly how desperate House Veyl was to produce any heir, through any method, using any body you could take.”
Sarkan studies me. “Does she know you have my medical logs?”
“No.”
Jorren turns to me. “The motive is evidence. The exact medical findings need not become spectacle.”
I close the projection.
I turn from the containment field.
“There will be no public clinical display,” I say before leaving. “We will establish motive under judicial seal.”
* * *
Medical bay three has become Elara’s kingdom of reluctant rest.
She is awake when I arrive.
She sits propped against raised cushions with a water cup in one hand and an expression suggesting she has already fought Seryn and lost on a technicality. Her wrist is freshly bandaged. A faint bruise marks her jaw. Her hair is braided badly over one shoulder.
Nima sits nearby with a protein bar. Through the partition, Ben speaks quietly with a medic while Liora sleeps, one hand near her bandaged temple. Seryn reviews Elara’s readings.
Elara looks up when I enter.
“I need to tell you what I threatened Sarkan with,” I say. “If you have the strength.”
Elara sets down her water. “Tell me.”
“I threatened to release Sarkan’s medical logs unless he testified.”
“Using private body records in a fight about men using private body records.”
“Yes.”
“Jorren stopped me. Nothing has been released. We can establish motive under judicial seal.”
“He used implants, sedatives, fear. He threatened my baby.”
“And I hate that his privacy still matters.”
“Use what proves the case. Seal the rest,” Elara says.
“Witnessed.”
“I need to attend council record,” I say.
“Varesh is using the abduction to argue emergency custody. Maiven and Therak are holding him, but this evidence will change the floor.”
“Can I attend?”
Seryn says, “Private medical feed only. No standing. No council chamber.”
“Private feed. No projection. No one gets to look at me in a medical bed and call it concern.”
The Black Star routes the council feed into medical under Elara’s authority and my command. The image appears on a side wall, dimmed at Seryn’s insistence. Elara leans back with Nima beside her and Seryn watching vitals like a predator.
I leave for command with Jorren.
* * *
The council transmission chamber hums as we enter. Not the secondary observation room this time. The formal command channel. Varesh made the matter public enough that public record now works against him.
Sarkan appears on a secured remote projection from high containment. He cannot see Elara. He cannot address her. He can see me, the council, and himself looking far less perfect than he prefers.
The councilors appear one by one.
Varesh sits at the center, face carved from fury disguised as law.
Maiven is to his left.
Therak to his right.
Four others fill the crescent. Some cautious. Some hungry. Some afraid.
Varesh speaks first. “Rhazek Vonn, this emergency review concerns the abduction of Elara Quinn from your ship and fortress while under your protection.”
“Sarkan Veyl abducted Elara Quinn using sovereign routes accessed through council-sanctioned consultation.”
Maiven says, “The preliminary record supports this framing.”
Varesh’s gaze cuts to her. “The record supports an attack. It does not absolve Rhazek Vonn’s failure to protect—”
“No,” Sarkan says. “He did not fail to protect her.”
Sarkan turns toward Varesh’s projection. “Rhazek Vonn protected Elara Quinn well enough that I needed the sovereign routes you opened to reach her.”
Maiven leans forward. “You admit planning the abduction?”
Sarkan’s gaze flicks to her. “I admit recovering what the council was too weak to secure.”
Therak’s staff strikes the floor once. “Answer clearly.”
Sarkan’s eyes cool. “Yes. I ordered the operation to remove Elara Quinn from Vonn Akra.”
Voices overlap. Varesh raises a hand for silence, but it takes longer than usual.
Maiven’s voice cuts through. “Did High Councilor Varesh authorize this operation?”
Sarkan waits before answering.
“High Councilor Varesh did not authorize abduction,” he says.
Sarkan continues, “He authorized access.”
Maiven’s eyes narrow. “Access to what?”
“Historical sovereign protection infrastructure surrounding Vonn Akra’s birth chambers.”
Therak turns his head slowly toward Varesh.
Varesh’s voice is cold. “For consultation. For safety review.”
“For leverage,” Sarkan says.
Maiven says, “You used sedative compounds.”
“Yes.”
“Controlled human captives.”
“Available resources.”
Therak’s staff strikes the floor. Even houses that tolerated brutality despised hidden puppetry; their oaths meant nothing without a will behind them.
“The human woman freed them,” Sarkan adds, tone sour.
Maiven seizes it. “Elara Quinn freed seven captives after escaping your restraints?”
“Yes.”
Maiven asks, “What pressure did you use against Elara?”
“Appropriate pressure,” Sarkan says.
Jorren submits the clip Elara approved: only the moment Sarkan’s weapon lowers toward Elara’s abdomen and his voice calls her my future. Her fear remains outside the public clip.
Sarkan watches himself on the record.
“Elara Quinn ordered Sarkan kept alive because she understood what this record required,” I say.
I continue. “This council claimed Elara Quinn was too compromised to direct her own safety.”
“Her judgment preserved this evidence and saved his captives.”
Maiven says, “Let the record show this.”
The council clerk seals the statement.
Varesh’s voice cuts in. “No one disputes Elara Quinn’s courage. The question remains whether her continued proximity to Rhazek Vonn creates unacceptable instability.”
“High Councilor,” Therak says, voice like grinding stone, “Lord Veyl has just admitted using your authorized consultation to abduct her.”
Varesh’s face hardens. “Do not imply—”
“I imply nothing. I state that your judgment is also in question.”
Varesh turns to me. “And what of you, Rhazek? You claim restraint because Elara Quinn commanded it. Does that not prove the bond has made you subject to her influence?”
“Elara Quinn has influence over me.”
“So does Jorren when he challenges a tactical choice, or Seryn when she treats an injury. Influence is not coercion.”
“I offer myself to Elara Quinn as her mate.”
“The answer is hers. No pregnancy, rite or law supplies it for her.”
Varesh says, “That is not how mate law works.”
“No,” I answer. “That is how it failed.”
Maiven leans forward. “A mate declaration subject to her acceptance?”
“Yes.”
Varesh’s voice turns sharp. “You cannot rewrite sovereign law because you desire a human.”
“No. I rewrite nothing alone. I declare that no law that begins by ignoring the pregnant woman will govern the future she carries.”
Voices rise through the council chamber.
On the side display, Elara’s private medical feed lights once.
A text-only message appears under her authority.
Elara Quinn requests permission to enter statement into council record. No visual projection.
Maiven reads the request aloud.
Varesh’s mouth flattens. “The patient should be resting.”
The text field updates.
The patient is annoyed by that sentence.
Maiven’s voice remains beautifully controlled. “Elara Quinn’s statement is accepted under medical feed restriction.”
The next message appears.
I am listening without a visual feed because my injuries are not an exhibit. Keep Sarkan alive for testimony and his medical details under judicial seal. My refusal of council custody and Veyl contact stands. Seryn remains my doctor.
Rhazek Vonn has offered himself. He has not answered for me. That is why I am still here.
The final line appears.
If the council wants to protect my pregnancy, start by protecting my right to speak for myself.
The statement seals into record.
Varesh finally breaks the silence. “This does not resolve the issue of bond coercion.”
“If Rhazek Vonn offers a mate bond while she is pregnant through the Black Star bond, then the council must determine whether her stated choices are truly willing or biologically compelled.”
Maiven says, “You tread dangerously, High Councilor.”
Fear moves through me. The bond does influence. Elara has said so herself.
Varesh folds his hands. “At the next hearing, Elara Quinn must demonstrate that any claimed consent toward Rhazek Vonn is independent, informed, and not merely the product of pregnancy-linked bond compulsion.”
Maiven objects, but the other councilors are listening.
Elara’s text field appears again.
Then ask me.
Varesh studies the line. “Very well. The next hearing will address bond consent directly.”
The text field updates.
Good. Bring better questions.
Seryn sends a private note: She is done. End this.
I close my fist.
“The council has Sarkan’s admission, Elara Quinn’s statement, sealed medical motive evidence, and record of Varesh’s compromised consultation. I move to suspend emergency custody review until investigation of Veyl abduction and council-route misuse concludes.”
Therak supports immediately.
Maiven seconds. Three others join them.
The motion passes.
Emergency custody suspended.
Sarkan remanded to Black Star containment pending joint witness transfer.
Veyl assets frozen within Nyxaran reach.
Varesh’s route authorization placed under inquiry.
The council feed ends with Varesh staring at me.
Sarkan’s projection remains a second longer.
His gaze fixes on me.
“She will hate proving she wants you,” he says softly.
“No,” I say. “She will hate that anyone thinks proof is owed.”
The projection cuts.
* * *
Medical bay three is quiet when I return. Seryn waits at the foot of Elara’s platform; Nima sits beside it. The door remains open.
Elara is asleep.
“How is she?”
“Exhausted. Stable,” Seryn answers.
Elara stirs. I move to the chair where she asked me to stay.
