FOUR

KAYLA

I should probably feel worse than I do that this is the second activity I’ve skipped out on. At my best friend’s wedding.

Am I the worst bridesmaid ever? Possibly.

I have spent a significant portion of my time on this beautiful trip dreaming up filthy fantasies about the bride’s father. That’s not exactly supportive friend behavior.

But it’s not my fault that I’ve never liked boats, and I get terribly seasick.

The activity for today is an all-day cruise around the islands off the coast. I do feel a little jealous of the views and photo opportunities that everyone else is going to see. At the same time, a day of relaxation is exactly what I need right now.

Becca’s valiant effort to get Robert to stay behind with me went nowhere, thank God. Everyone heads into a van for the port, and I drop into a sun lounger beside the pool. It’s just me and the parakeets that are everywhere in this part of Spain.

The blissful emptiness sets in and I feel like I can breathe for the first time in days. The quiet gives me time to think, and thinking only leads to one place.

Victor.

Our encounter after the hiking trip may have been insignificant for a man with Victor’s experience, but to me it was a big deal. I haven’t had any time to process it — or the reason that I haven’t seen him since.

I’m holding a book in my hands but I’m not reading it at all. No, instead I’m daydreaming entirely about one thing.

“Kayla? You’re not joining the group either?”

It can’t be.

I shake my head, looking up at where Victor leans against a stone wall. I know we probably shouldn’t see each other again, but I can certainly admire his muscled physique and handsome face. I’m sure I’m not the only wedding guest who is doing so.

The man is practically a Greek god. If Greek gods had massive cocks and knew how to make women cum with their mouths in under two minutes.

The look on his face pours cold water on the idea that something might happen today.

I wish he was looking at me the way he did after that walk. Instead, Victor looks grimly determined, the lines of his face set without any playfulness.

He rakes a hand through his thick, dark hair. His blue eyes are directed at the horizon.

“Kayla, about Thursday…that was too much of a close call.”

I nod, my face flaming as I remember.

What if Becca, my best friend in the whole world, had walked in to find her Dad doing that to me?

“I know. It was stupid.”

And hot. And I can’t stop thinking about it.

The look on his face, the way he touched my breasts, the way his tongue felt between my legs…it’s all stuck in my head, playing on a loop like a catchy song.

I push away that voice inside my head that still wants Victor like crazy. His eyes are grave and serious.

“It was my fault. You didn’t do anything wrong,” he says. “I’m so attracted to you, Kayla, but I shouldn’t be. I should have used better judgment.”

“It’s okay,” I tell him. Why is Victor acting like he’s done something wrong?

I wanted what happened yesterday just as much as he did, but he’s acting like it was all on him.

“I wanted you, too,” I tell him, hoping to clarify.

His gaze charges with heat for a second and I think maybe he’s changed his mind. I’m only wearing a bikini and when his gaze drops to my breasts, then down to the tiny bikini bottoms which barely cover me up, I think I’ve won.

Instead, he turns away, takes a deep breath and continues his explanation in a deep, strained voice. Disappointment settles in my stomach.

“I know that we have this physical connection, and that’s strong, but we need to be realistic. Besides, it’s not like there’s any way this could work between us.”

Maybe he’s not as into me as I thought. The man who touched me like that day wouldn’t be acting like this.

I turn away from him, hoping that he won’t notice the way my lip is wobbling. This is ridiculous. People have one-night stands all the time, and they don’t mope around feeling rejected when it ends. I knew this wasn’t forever, but it stings to hear it.

It stings to have this man staying next to me for the rest of the trip, knowing that we want each other, and not being able to do anything about it.

“Kayla,” his voice softens, but I don’t want to hear it. It’s unbearable. “I didn’t want to upset you. I just think we should be realistic about what we can do here.”

I shake my hair over my shoulders and wipe my tears away, straightening up.

“I’m fine. Please just go.”

He sighs, throwing another regretful glance down at the floral bikini I’m wearing. He could be ripping this off me right now. He’s just choosing not to.

“Okay. I’ll go.”

The last thing I see is Victor’s blue eyes intent on me, his brow creased in concern. I can’t stop myself wanting him, even while he’s rejecting me. It’s ridiculous.

It flashes through my mind, briefly, that maybe I could convince him to stay. He seemed to want me badly enough yesterday…but the reality is I’m not prepared to throw myself at this perfect man, only to face rejection.

The tears start rolling down my face again after he leaves. This is not the relaxing day I was expecting.

I slide lower in the sun lounger and pretend to read my book. My head is spinning again, for all the wrong reasons.

Maybe he is right.

Every time I see him I get an excited, fluttery feeling in my stomach — which is not how having a summer vacation fling is supposed to work. Let alone a summer vacation fling with my best friend’s dad.

This is not a low-stakes, emotion-free situation. Now that it’s over, that much is even clearer.

I force myself to go through the motions for the rest of the day. Exploring the insanely beautiful gardens, swimming in the heated pool, walking on the perfect beach.

That night, we have a beautiful dinner outside in the gardens. I socialize and don’t even look in Victor’s direction, but it’s all an act.

I can’t enjoy any of it because I’m too busy thinking about Victor.

The really embarrassing part is that the rejection does nothing to stop my desire from him. That night, knowing that he’s just a few feet away from me, I can’t stop thinking about him.

I touch myself. The same way that he touched me yesterday. I orgasm thinking about him, imagining what today could have been…but it’s nowhere near enough compared to the real thing.
