6. Sight

Chapter six

Sight

The morning after Emma's nocturnal encounter, she found herself uncharacteristically distracted during his wound examination. Each time her fingers brushed his skin, memories of moonlit muscle threatened her composure.

"The healing is progressing well," she managed, proud of how steady she kept her voice despite her racing pulse.

"Your treatments are most effective." The rich timbre of his voice seemed designed to shatter her professional demeanour. "Though you seem rather preoccupied this morning."

"I'm simply ensuring the stitches are holding properly." She focused intently on the wound, refusing to acknowledge how his proximity affected her breathing.

"Ah. And does such medical scrutiny usually bring such lovely colour to your cheeks?"

Emma's fingers stilled. "Mr Hughes..."

"I particularly admire your dedication to examining all aspects of patient health." His voice held barely suppressed amusement. "Including, apparently, muscular integrity in areas far from the original injury."

She fumbled with the fresh bandage, mortified that he'd noticed her appreciation of his form the previous night. "I was conducting a thorough examination."

"Indeed?" The word emerged like silk against skin. "And did my...physique meet with your professional approval?"

"You are impossible." She tied off the bandage with more force than necessary, ignoring his sharp intake of breath. "This arrangement does not give you licence to…"

"To what?" All humour vanished from his voice. "To notice how your hands tremble when you touch me? To observe how your breath catches when I move closer?"

"Mr Hughes, I—" She raised her eyes, unprepared for the intensity of his gaze. For a moment, neither spoke, the air between them charged with dangerous possibility.

Emma straightened quickly, smoothing her skirts. "I must leave for work. Rest. That leg needs more time to heal."

But as she reached the door, his voice stopped her. "Tonight?"

"Yes," she whispered, not daring to look back.

She fled then, her heart thundering. Behind her, she heard his soft laugh, knowing he was fully aware of the effect he had on her usually impeccable composure.

Impossible man.

Once Emma departed for the hospital, Everett waited until Mrs Norris was making noises in the kitchen before beginning his search. His wounds protested as he made his way to her bedroom, each step a reminder of his vulnerability in this house where he played both patient and spy.

The bedroom door creaked softly as he entered her private sanctuary.

Morning light spilled across the meticulously made bed, catching dust motes that danced like thoughts in the air.

Medical texts lined the walls, their spines showing careful use rather than mere display.

A leather bookmark bearing Kincaid's name protruded from one volume.

He began his systematic search, telling himself each invasion of her privacy served his greater purpose.

Yet as he catalogued the evidence—journals filled with precise observations, detailed surgical notes that revealed expertise far beyond a nurse's training—he found himself increasingly drawn into the brilliant mind they revealed.

Her marginalia showed both scientific rigor and flashes of dry wit that made him smile despite himself.

The descent downstairs proved a study in humiliation.

He was forced to navigate each step backwards, clutching his crutches while trying to maintain silence.

The indignity burned—he, who could once scale buildings with ease, reduced to creeping through a country house like an invalid thief.

His muscles, honed by years of gymnastics training, rebelled against such constraint.

Each room he explored offered new facets of its mistress, building a portrait more complex than any dossier could capture.

Medical journals shared shelf space with poetry volumes.

Dried herbs hung in neat bundles, their labels written in a hand that managed to be both precise and somehow graceful.

A half-finished cup of tea on a windowsill bore the faint imprint of her lips.

He found himself noting these details not for his assignment, but from a growing fascination that threatened to compromise his purpose.

The way she arranged her tools with surgical precision yet kept fresh flowers on her desk.

How her medical notes revealed both clinical detachment and profound compassion for her patients.

When he discovered her private study, duty demanded he search it thoroughly.

Yet something made him hesitate at the threshold, as if crossing it would alter something fundamental between them.

The room held her essence in every careful arrangement—medical instruments laid out like silver service, anatomical drawings displayed with an artist's eye for composition.

His fingers traced the edge of her desk unbidden, imagining her bent over it in concentration, golden hair catching candlelight as she worked late into the night.

The locked drawers mocked his attempts at investigation.

Clean desk surface and multiple secure cabinets suggested she kept her most damning documents here.

He would need to return once his mobility improved, yet the thought brought no satisfaction.

Instead, he found himself studying the room's subtle details—the way afternoon light warmed the leather chairs, the faint scent of lavender that seemed to permeate everything she touched.

He had been right to decline investigating the hospital directly.

The physicians there clearly protected her, and why wouldn't they?

What respected doctor would admit a mere nurse had mastered procedures that baffled them?

As he stood in her study, surrounded by evidence of her dedication and skill, he wondered if she, indeed, deserved protection.

A floorboard creaked somewhere in the house, sending his pulse racing. He withdrew quickly, erasing signs of his presence with care. The evidence he'd gathered sat heavy in his mind.

He told himself it was duty that made his hands shake slightly as he copied his findings into coded notes. Duty that made him hesitate before sealing the envelope that would damn her. Duty that kept him from burning the whole thing and damn the consequences.

But as he watched shadows lengthen across her garden, he wondered if duty alone explained the growing hollow in his chest, or the way his fingers lingered over her handwriting before tucking the evidence away.

He was a man used to certainty, to clear lines between right and wrong.

Yet in this house, surrounded by pieces of her life he had no right to know, those lines blurred like watercolours in rain.

That evening, Everett found himself in Emma's parlour, his heart racing as he contemplated their first lesson in sensual awakening.

Though his mind warned against this dangerous path, his body thrilled at the prospect of introducing the stern Miss Brown to pleasure's mysteries. "Stand up," he commanded.

She rose hesitantly. Everett’s heart thumped against his ribs as something shifted in the air between them. Gone was the austere nurse with her clinical gaze and precise movements. In her place stood a woman trembling on the precipice of discovery, awaiting instruction in matters of pleasure.

Her usual precise, analytical gaze had softened into something more vulnerable, her lips slightly parted and her cheeks touched with colour that had nothing to do with rouge. The transformation from capable physician, to equal parts uncertainty and longing, made him forget his purpose entirely.

Blood rushed in his ears as he watched her fingers twist in her skirts, her throat working as she swallowed. This was madness. He was here to investigate her, not initiate her into the mysteries of orgasm.

Her suggestion had seemed preposterous last evening, but he had tossed and turned in the dark, wondering how she would unravel under his touch, how those carefully controlled features would transform in moments of abandon.

“I’m ready,” she whispered breathlessly, and her voice set his veins ablaze.

Already he could imagine her categorising every reaction, every sensation. The thought shouldn’t arouse him. Yet watching her struggle between clinical detachment and raw desire made his blood sing.

“Stand still,” he commanded, his voice rougher than intended. “First lesson is visual appreciation.”

She stiffened as he circled her, his eyes raking over the favourite parts: Even through her proper day dress and what he imagined must be several layers of petticoats, Everett could discern the graceful lines of Emma's figure.

She was of average height, her waist trim and emphasized by her bodice's careful tailoring.

Her modest bosom suited her slender frame, rising and falling now with quickened breath that betrayed her apparent composure.

Though her practical attire was meant to downplay feminine curves, the flare of her hips beneath her skirts hinted at a womanly fullness that stirred his imagination.

Her eyes followed him just as hungrily, roaming over his mouth, throat, chest, and…

groin. Her eyes widened slightly at his growing erection, which did nothing to suppress his arousal.

Her lips parted as his gaze traced her form.

Here was power he hadn’t anticipated. Her responsiveness to his mere visual perusal fragmented his control.

He stopped behind her, close enough to feel her body heat. “Tell me what you feel when I look at you like this.”

“I…” Her voice caught. “I feel as though you’re already touching me.”

The confession sent desire surging through him. Control, Moreland. But how could he maintain distance when she trembled so beautifully under his gaze?

“Explain,” he said, his voice hoarse. God help him, but her confession made him want to replace his gaze with his hands.
