Chapter 16A
Grey
My phone buzzes as few minutes after Cain leaves his apartment. I reach for it, expecting Cain. A message saying he's coming back early. Something to reassure me that he is thinking of me as much as I am thinking of him. It's not Cain.
Unknown: You think you've won.
I stare at the screen. What? Before I can even think of a reply a new message comes through
Unknown: You think he's yours. He's not. He never will be.
I type back.
Me: Who is this?
Unknown: The woman he’s destined to be with.
There is only one person that comes to my mind. That fucking b... Rose.
Rose: He told me, how desperate you are. You're entertainment Grey. A game. Nothing more.
My hands are shaking.
Rose: But I'm not a game. I'm a threat. And if you don't stay away from him...
She doesn't finish the sentence. She doesn't need to. I already know how that line goes.
I stare at the phone. He told her? He told her about us? About the bathroom? The apartment? She lying? She has to be lying. She's trying to scare me. She's trying to make me doubt him.
And it's working. Fuck.
I type back.
Me: I don't believe you.
Rose: Then ask him. Ask him about me. Ask him what we talked about in the club. Ask him why he's been keeping me close.
Rose: Or don't. And find out what happens when you underestimate me.
My phone buzzes again.
Rose: Grey you know what will happen once Cain knows about your past, don’t you. Stay away from him.
I want to respond, but I can't. My hands are too shaky. My throat is too tight. My mind is too full of what ifs.
What if she's telling the truth? What if Cain was using me? What if this was all just a game to him? What if, he already knows what I did when I was sixteen? What if he’s just waiting for the right moment to decide I'm not worth the risk?
The front door opens.
