Chapter 19 The Road Back
Xuan Ming followed behind Xie Ning.
Xie Ning rode hard, lips pressed tight, saying nothing.
"Young Valley Lord..."
Xuan Ming urged his horse closer.
"What did you say to Imperial Princess?"
"Why are we not going to Yu Jing anymore?"
Xie Ning glanced back at him.
"Do you really want to become an official in Yu Jing?"
Xuan Ming straightened.
"Young Lord said it first!"
"Do not mention Rong Che's name in front of me," Xie Ning said coldly.
Xuan Ming looked wronged.
"I was dragged out of bed. Can I not ask why?"
Xie Ning stayed silent for a moment.
"We will talk after we leave Lan Shan City."
They rode until they were far outside the city, on a dark forest path.
Xie Ning finally stopped his horse.
"No one is following us. We can slow down."
Xuan Ming still looked confused.
"Following us? Rong Che is chasing us?"
Xie Ning dismounted and gathered dry branches.
He lit a fire and sat down with his eyes closed.
"You can sleep a few more hours. We return to Ling Yun Valley at dawn."
Xuan Ming gritted his teeth.
"Our lives matter too, you know."
Xie Ning did not answer.
Xuan Ming gave up and lay down.
Just as he closed his eyes, Xie Ning spoke.
"Are those old eagles at Wu Liang Cliff still alive?"
Xuan Ming opened his eyes.
"They are. Why?"
Xie Ning said nothing more.
Xuan Ming sighed and closed his eyes again.
A moment later, Xie Ning asked again.
"What about the snakes at Tong Tian Ridge? Still alive?"
Xuan Ming sat up.
"Why are you asking about them?"
Xie Ning opened his eyes.
"Tomorrow, we will visit them one by one."
"You are coming with me."
Xuan Ming stared at him in shock.
"Young Valley Lord, even if Imperial Princess drove you out and refused to marry you..."
"You cannot just go around killing people!"
Xie Ning looked at him.
"Shut up."
