1. Incubus
INCUBUS
Sitting on my front porch, rocking in one of my rocking chairs, I stare out into the vast darkness; the only light coming from the quarter moon and the millions of stars in the sky.
I can’t wrap my head around a single minute from the time I ran out of our chapel emergency meeting to this moment right now.
The words are all muddled in my brain and, for some reason, I can’t process any of them.
How the fuck did I—no, shit—how did we, Stella and I, get here?
Son of a bitch I mean, for Christ’s sake, thought we were on a good path, finally.
My road to redemption was looking really good, with both Stella and Isabella getting ready to move in here with me, in this home that was going to become our forever home.
I was also gonna come clean with my brothers about Stella and me.
I had no goddamn idea she was involved with the bastards in the motherfuckin’ Mob, especially with that huge-ass bastard Gino.
I hated that son of a bitch before this and now that emotion is so much more than I can even think about or put a word to.
I’ve been sitting on my ass, planning on how I’m going to make that bastard pay for kidnapping and then ordering some of his bastard assholes to beat the fuckin’ piss outta her.
My Stella, my ol’ lady and he knows it too, that’s why he ordered it, the jagoff.
That photo on Cobalt’s phone will forever be permanently tattooed in my mind’s memory.
I had my brother send it to me also, so when I feel like giving up, that photo will bring my anger to the forefront, forcing me not to ever forget about my Stella.
Trying to make sense out of everything, I rewind my brain, trying and struggling to figure out what to do next.
First though, I gotta get through my anger and confrontation with my brothers.
Being a total asshole to them is unacceptable, even from me.
Our club will only survive if we maintain our brotherhood and not allow any one of us to break the club rules.
I can see myself slamming the heavy wooden door to chapel, as I stomp my way into the common room and see everyone’s head jerk up in there, but no one says a single word.
Well, until Sparkle moves like the speed of light, following me out the door.
Son of a bitch, don’t need her goddamn yappin’ right now.
I have had hours of it from my brothers, trying to figure out our next moves with no goddamn success.
I suddenly stop and turn on her. Before I can even growl, she lets me have it in a way none of us have ever seen from Sparkle.
“You stupid son of a bitch. Turn around and march your fine ass right back in there, Incubus. If any of your brothers tried this shit, you’d be losing your goddamn mind while dropping a hemorrhoid or maybe twenty.
Don’t give me that look, you dumbass. Haven’t you figured out yet, that doesn’t work on me like those little girls in there, afraid of their own goddamn shadows.
No, zip it. You’re gonna give me a minute or two and listen good.
I don’t care what’s all up in your head, mister.
It’s time for you to shit or get off that motherfuckin’ toilet you’ve been hogging for so long now.
Stella needs you right now, not in a day or a week but immediately.
Brother, I know you’re scared as shit. Yeah, I get it, but sometimes we have to do the crap we least want to.
It’s your time to fight like you’ve never fought before, Incubus.
Yeah, I remember all the bullshit you gave Julie and she never backed down.
Not even once. So, my question to you is, are you gonna let a purple-haired tiny woman outdo ya or be stronger than you, the great enforcer Incubus?
Think on that as you move that fine ass of yours back to the chapel.
I mean it, don’t make me go all clubhouse manager on your ass. MOVE YOUR DUMB ASS, MOTHERFUCKER!”
Before I can say one single word, I hear snickering from the doorway.
I know what I’m gonna see before I even lift my head to look behind me, and yeah, my internal eye hasn’t failed me.
Cobalt is leaning against the building, one foot cocked up, his boot on the concrete bricks.
Psycho is next to him, though just standing, ankles crossed.
In the doorway, I can see brothers crammed next to each other, eyes on Sparkle with a newfound respect.
Yeah, I gotta give the woman her due because if any other person—male or female—talked to me like that, first I’d cut out their tongue, then feed it to them piece by piece before I’d make them feel a whole new level of pain for their utter disrespect.
Not sure if I’d leave them breathing or not.
Though if I took a minute to think, Sparkle’s never disrespected me at all.
She just took my head outta my own ass. Seeing someone trying to push through the brothers at the door, I literally want to tuck tail and run when Girlie makes her way to the front.
Then, I think, to everyone’s surprise, she puts in her two cents.
Well, more like ten cents, but shit, does she surprise me.
“What the hell are y’all looking at? Jesus Christ, give the man a minute to gather his thoughts.
Like any of you would have handled that any differently.
Don’t try and blow smoke up our asses because, deep down, you are all made from the same cloth and alpha gene.
Everyone get your asses inside and give Blue Eyes, Psycho, and Incubus a minute to catch their breaths and think.
Sparkle, you made a shit ton of food, didn’t ya?
Okay, you heard her, move those asses and let’s eat.
Boys, we’ll save some for y’all too, take your time. ”
I watch the sassiest woman I’ve ever met, well besides Stella, push through a line of one-percent bikers, making her way to the dining area.
To my astonishment, my brothers turn and slowly start to follow her in.
My eyes shift to my prez and VP, who have their own eyes watching me.
Off to the other side of the door, Nickel is standing awkwardly but no less badass.
I raise an eyebrow, he turns to look at the two men then back at me, his own brow up.
Motherfucker, the kid is here to support me and have my back.
Well, I’ll be damned. Just as I go to tell Nickel I’m good, leave it to big mouth and total asshole Psycho to jump in, being his usual offensive jagoff self.
“Nickel, whatcha waitin’ on, brother, an imbecile bus to pick your ass up? Incubus can take care of himself. He don’t need no lame-ass prospect hanging around, thinkin’ they’re doing him a favor by havin’ his back. Get, isn’t it time for your physical therapy anyway, boy?”
Nickel’s face gets pink but he doesn’t move a single muscle, just continues to stand there glaring at our VP.
Well, for fuck’s sake, it’s a biker standoff.
Only thing is, Nickel doesn’t want to get on the bad side of Psycho ’cause that brother can hold a motherfuckin’ grudge.
Walking toward the door, I put my arm around Nickel’s shoulders, gently moving him right to the door, ignoring my prez and VP.
Leaning in, I tell him I’m okay and thank him.
Yeah, me, the club enforcer thanking a prospect—who’s been beaten and tortured to shit—for having my back.
Maybe I am turning into a goddamn pussy, who the hell knows?
I won’t let him hang out there by himself against that asshole Psycho.
He looks over my shoulder then, talk about shocking the shit outta all of us, he flips off—I’m assuming Psycho—and walks in, slamming the door behind him.
I hear Cobalt chuckle while our VP is threatening to kick the kid out of our club and the prospect program cause he just disrespected a club brother and officer.
Well, first it ain’t exactly a formal class or shit.
The prospects get all the worst jobs and have to do whatever we say.
It builds character. Second the ‘brother and officer started it.’ Not sure what’s up Psycho’s ass, but it stops right here and now.
“Brother, or better yet, ya asshole, that would need a club vote and I—for one—am not voting out a kid who’s been brutalized and still seems to want to help a fellow brother out.
More than I can say about you. Exactly what crawled up your ass and died, you bastard?
Like I don’t have enough on my plate, thanks for being here for me, Psycho.
Yeah great brother you are might learn a thing or two from Nickel. ”
