Chapter 17 #2

No response, just the soft sound of Horrace's movements as he investigated a particularly interesting shelf. I took a tentative step forward, then another, gaining confidence as nothing immediately tried to kill me. Because you never know.

The room was larger than it had first appeared, with archways leading to other spaces that I couldn't quite see into. Everything had a slightly dreamlike quality, edges that weren't quite solid, colors that shifted.

"I think we're still in some kind of pocket dimension," I looked at Horrace, who was now attempting to read a book by pressing a tentacle against its pages. "The question is, how do we get back?"

As if in response to my question, one of the books Horrace was touching suddenly flew off the shelf, hovering in the air before me. It flipped open, pages turning rapidly until it settled on a hand-drawn map.

I leaned closer, trying to make sense of the strange symbols and curving lines. "Is this supposed to help us?"

The book shuddered, then more pages turned, revealing a detailed drawing of what appeared to be a fish bowl?

"Frank?" I blinked in surprise. "Is that Frank's bowl?"

The drawing began to move, the fish swimming in circles, just like Frank did when he was agitated. Then the perspective pulled back, showing the bowl sitting on a kitchen counter, my kitchen counter.

"That's the apartment," I realized. "Is this book showing us how to get home?"

The pages turned again, revealing another drawing, this time of a familiar face with large, curious eyes and an enthusiastic smile.

"Milo. He must be trying to find us."

Horrace made an excited trilling sound, bouncing slightly on his many limbs. Through our connection, I felt his understanding, the book was somehow connected to our world, showing us what was happening there.

The drawing of Milo seemed to be speaking, his mouth moving silently. I wished I could hear what he was saying. As if responding to my thought, the book trembled, and suddenly Milo's voice filled the room, distorted and echoing as if coming from underwater.

"...Winter! Can you hear me? The rift is unstable, but I'm trying to reopen it. Horrace's energy signature is still detectable, so you can't be too far in the inter-dimensional spectrum. If you can hear me, try to focus on something familiar, something that can anchor you back to our reality!"

"Milo!" I called back. "We can hear you! We're in some kind of library dimension!"

But there was no indication that he could hear me. The image in the book showed him surrounded by equipment I didn't recognize, his tiny skeletons running back and forth with various magical instruments.

"I need to try to contact him somehow," I looked at Horrace. "Can you do anything? This is more your territory than mine."

Horrace considered for a moment, all twelve eyes blinking in sequence. Then he approached the floating book and placed a tentacle on the image of Milo. The book shuddered, and Horrace began to glow with the same blue light as my markings.

Through our connection, I felt him reaching out, extending his awareness across the dimensional barrier. It was like watching someone stretch an invisible muscle, I couldn't see it, but I could feel the strain, the effort.

The image in the book flickered, and for a brief moment, Milo's head snapped up, his eyes widening as if he'd heard something. "Horrace? Winter? Is that you?"

"Yes!" I shouted, though I still wasn't sure if he could hear me. "We're trapped in some kind of pocket dimension! A library!"

The image flickered again, and Milo's expression changed to one of determination. "I think I felt them! They're in a pocket reality, something created by the interaction of Horrace's energy and Winter's prophetic power. If I can just..."

The book suddenly slammed shut, cutting off Milo's voice. It dropped to the floor with a heavy thud, and the room around us seemed to shudder in response.

"That can't be good," I muttered, just as the chandelier above us began to sway ominously. "Yup. Definitely not good."

The orbs of light flickered, changing from their gentle color rotation to an angry, pulsing red. The bookshelves started to shift, books sliding out of their patterns and reorganizing themselves into new, more complex arrangements.

"I think the room knows we're trying to leave," I backed away from the fallen book. "And it doesn't like it."

Horrace made a low, discordant sound, his form rippling with tension. Through our connection, I felt his growing alarm, this place wasn't just a random pocket dimension; it was responsive, possibly sentient.

As if confirming my fears, the furniture began to move. A large armchair that I hadn't noticed before slid across the floor toward us, its cushions puffing up like it was taking a deep breath. A writing desk unfolded impossibly long legs and skittered up the wall like an insect.

Oh hell to the no no.

"Okay, time to go," I grabbed Horrace's tentacle. "Any ideas on how to get out of here?"

Horrace's eyes swiveled around the room, searching for an escape route. Through our connection, I felt his confusion, this wasn't like any dimension he was familiar with. It seemed to be adapting to us, responding to our presence in increasingly unsettling ways.

The chandelier had now descended to eye level, its orbs pulsing with hypnotic patterns. I found myself staring at them, unable to look away as they cycled through colors. One orb in particular seemed to be speaking to me, though not with words, with emotions, images, sensations.

It showed me myself, but not as I was now. An older version, with streaks of silver in my hair and the eye patch decorated with familiar runes. The same figure I'd seen in my prophetic dream.

"That's me?" I felt transfixed.

The orb pulsed in affirmation. More images flooded my mind, the Chalice, the four guardians who protected me; a dark figure with too many angles who sought to drain the Chalice dry. The prophecy, unfolding like a map of my future.

"I don't understand," I shook my head, trying to break free of the orb's influence. "What does this have to do with getting out of here?"

The orb flared brightly, and suddenly I understood. This pocket dimension hadn't formed by accident. It was a manifestation of my prophetic power, filtered through Horrace's inter-dimensional nature. A space created by our combined energies, shaped by my subconscious.

"I made this place," I realized with a start. "Or we did, together."

Horrace trilled in confirmation, his tentacles gesturing at the bookshelves. Through our connection, I felt his understanding, the books contained knowledge, possibilities, futures that might be. This library was a physical manifestation of prophetic potential.

"So if I created it," I reasoned, "I should be able to control it. Or at least find a way out."
