Chapter 30 #2
"The Bureau of Magical Compliance welcomes you to Harmonic Alignment Session 47-B," a pleasant, gender-neutral voice announced. "Please relax and allow the alignment energies to guide your experience."
"Here we go," I breathed, bracing myself.
The chamber hummed to life, the runes on the walls brightening. The floor beneath us began to pulse in earnest, sending waves of magical energy up through our bodies. I felt it wash over me, probing for emotional triggers, seeking points of tension.
Beside me, Milo giggled suddenly. "It tickles!" His eyes wide. "Like tiny fingers poking all my emotions at once."
Winter gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "I feel it too. Like someone's reading my diary without permission. Asshats!"
Rook stood rigidly, his face a mask of concentration as he clearly fought the chamber's influence.
I could sympathize; I was doing the same, drawing on centuries of practice at emotional control.
But the HAC was persistent. Each wave of energy grew stronger, more targeted, breaking down our defenses bit by bit.
"Initial resistance detected," the pleasant voice announced. "Increasing harmonization protocols."
The floor flashed brightly, and a wave of pure emotional energy slammed through us.
I staggered, my carefully constructed walls crumbling as the magic found every crack, every weak point.
Emotions I'd been suppressing for days, frustration, jealousy, desire, anger, confusion, bubbled to the surface.
"Fuck," I gasped, dropping to one knee as the intensity overwhelmed me. Around me, the others were similarly affected.
Milo had fallen onto his back, laughing uncontrollably. Winter sat heavily on the floor, her blue markings flaring as she clutched her head. Rook was still standing, but barely, his entire body trembling with the effort of resistance.
"Please cease resistance," the voice admonished. "Compliance will reduce distress."
"Easy for you to say," Winter shouted at the ceiling. "You're not the one being magically mind-fucked!"
Her outburst triggered another wave of energy, stronger than before. This time, I couldn't fight it. The magic seized control, and I found myself speaking without conscious intent.
"I'm angry at Rook because he acts like he has exclusive rights to Winter when he won't even admit how he feels about her," the words tumbled out of me, raw and unfiltered.
"And I'm jealous that Winter kissed him first, and that Milo looks at him with the same fascination he looks at me.
I'm jealous of the way Winter watches all of you, including Fenric. "
Horrified, I clapped a hand over my mouth, but it was too late. The words hung in the air, glowing briefly blue before dissolving into sparkles that rained down over us all.
"Initial disclosure accepted," the voice announced approvingly. "Participant Rook, response required for harmonization."
Rook's eyes widened in panic as the chamber's magic compelled him. He fought it, visibly straining against the compulsion, but ultimately lost.
"I hate that Zane touched Winter," he growled, the words seemingly torn from his throat. "I hate that she enjoyed it. I hate that I can smell them on each other. And I hate that part of me wonders what he tastes like too."
The last admission clearly shocked him as much as it did the rest of us. His eyes met mine across the circle, horror and confusion warring in their amber depths.
Before anyone could react, the chamber turned its attention to Winter.
"I'm furious that you two are fighting over me like I'm some prize to be won," she blurted, her markings pulsing erratically.
"But I'm also terrified that I'm falling for both of you.
And Milo. And even Fenric when he's not being an uptight bureaucrat.
I don't understand what's happening to me, and I'm scared that the prophecy is changing who I am. "
Milo was next, the chamber giving him no time to prepare.
"I've never felt like I belonged anywhere until I met all of you," he admitted, his usual cheerfulness replaced by vulnerable honesty. "My skeletons were the only friends I had for so long, and now I have living people who actually care about me. I'm terrified of losing that. Of losing any of you."
The energy in the room shifted as our forced confessions hung in the air. The initial discomfort was giving way to something else, a strange intimacy born of shared vulnerability.
"Phase one complete," the voice announced. "Beginning physical harmonization."
The floor shifted beneath us, the tiles rearranging themselves to bring us closer together. I found myself suddenly face to face with Rook, our bodies just inches apart. Winter was similarly positioned with Milo, the chamber apparently pairing us off for the next stage.
"Participants will now engage in physical contact to align discordant energies," the voice instructed. "Embrace your partner."
"You have got to be kidding me," Rook snarled, though the effect was somewhat undermined by the blush creeping up his neck.
"Just do it," I sighed, extending my arms. "Fighting it only makes it worse."
With visible reluctance, Rook stepped forward. We embraced awkwardly, our bodies stiff with mutual discomfort. His body was furnace-hot against mine, all solid muscle and barely contained strength. I could feel his heart hammering in his chest, a rhythm that matched my own elevated pulse.
"Insufficient contact detected," the voice chided. "Full embrace required for harmonic alignment."
The floor jolted beneath us, pushing us closer until we were properly hugging, chest to chest, my face against his shoulder due to our height difference. He smelled of pine and earth and wild that triggered both my fight and flight instincts simultaneously.
And something else, something my body responded to against my will.
Never in my centuries of existence had I been held by someone who could physically dominate me.
As a half-fae demon hunter, I was usually the strongest being in any given space.
But Rook's arms around me were bands of iron, his broad chest a wall of muscle against mine.
The werewolf could probably break me in half without shifting if he wanted to.
That realization shouldn't have been arousing. It definitely shouldn't have sent a jolt of heat straight to my groin. Yet here we were, and there was no hiding my body's reaction, pressed together as we were.
Rook tensed, his nostrils flaring. Werewolf senses. Of course he could smell my sudden arousal.
His eyes met mine, confusion giving way to understanding, then something darker. The amber of his irises shimmered, giving way to the gold of his wolf. A low growl rumbled through his chest, vibrating against mine.
"You're turned on," he accused quietly, his voice pitched so only I could hear.
"Not by choice," I grumbled back, though we both knew it wasn't entirely true. "Blame the magic."
The chamber hummed around us, apparently pleased by our prolonged contact. Across the room, Winter and Milo were similarly embracing, though with considerably less tension.
"Emotional harmony at thirty percent," the voice announced. "Continuing physical contact recommended."
Rook's growl deepened, but he didn't release me. If anything, his arms tightened slightly. "This is ridiculous."
"Agreed," I nodded against his shoulder, trying desperately to think unsexy thoughts. "Completely ridiculous."
"Then why are you still hard?" He whispered, the words hot against my ear.
I pulled back enough to meet his eyes, finding them now fully wolf-gold. "Why are you?" I countered, feeling his matching response pressed against my hip.
For a moment, we just stared at each other, mutual understanding passing between us. The chamber's magic might have forced us together, but our bodies' reactions were our own.
"Perhaps," Rook began haltingly, "we should—"
The door to the chamber suddenly slid open with a hiss, shattering the moment. We sprang apart as Fenric burst in, his usually perfect composure completely abandoned.
"Session terminated!" His silver-blond hair uncharacteristically disheveled. "Everyone out, now! The chamber is destabilizing!"
I looked around, noticing for the first time that the runes on the walls were flickering erratically. The floor beneath us had begun to vibrate, and the air felt charged with unstable magical energy.
"What's happening?" Winter's blue markings on her arm now pulsing rapidly in time with the failing runes.
Fenric's eye twitched violently. "Your prophetic energy is interacting with the chamber's alignment magic in unforeseen ways. The system is overloading. If we don't evacuate immediately, the resulting magical discharge coul.."
A loud crack interrupted him as the first of the floor tiles split in two.
"Could what?" Milo pressed, eyes wide.
"Trap us all in a pocket reality of pure emotional energy," Fenric finished grimly. "Now move!"
