Chapter 2 #2
He stalked toward me. I remained on the ground, my mind blank, unable to form a single coherent thought.
The transition from peaceful boredom to violent death happened too fast for my human brain to process.
Yarkur reached down, his large hand wrapping securely around my arm, just above my elbow.
His grip felt firm, unyielding, anchoring me to reality.
He hauled me to my feet in one smooth motion, ignoring my trembling legs.
He kept his jaw locked in brutal silence, offering only the relentless pressure of his hand on my arm.
He turned and led me back around the rocky bend, marching us away from the slaughter and back toward the lush greenery.
I stumbled alongside him, a puppet on a string.
My jaw worked, trying to form a sentence, trying to apologize or thank him, but my vocal cords refused to function.
I could only blink, staring in mute horror at the vile slime smearing his beautiful armor.
We passed the tree line, stepping onto the soft, familiar moss near the freshwater pool.
Yarkur stopped abruptly. He spun on his heel, his grip on my arm shifting.
He reached out with his other hand, grasping my opposite arm just above the elbow, and turned me to face him fully.
He leaned down, forcing me to look up into his face.
His golden eyes burned. The vertical slits narrowed into sharp, dangerous lines of pure, dominant authority.
The feral predator from the fight still hummed beneath his skin, demanding obedience.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the air between us.
I swallowed the dry lump in my throat, forcing my eyes to meet his.
"Here," he stated, his grip tightening slightly to emphasize his words.
"Inside this tree line. Next to this water.
Here, it is safe. This is Gila territory.
We maintain the borders. We bleed for this dirt.
" He released my arms, stepping back just enough to gesture sharply toward the rocky path we just fled.
"Beyond that bend, the canyon belongs to the wild.
It is a hunting ground. You are soft, Talsey.
You lack scales. You lack venom. Never walk out there alone.
" My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
I managed a jerky, desperate nod, confirming I understood the brutal lesson.
The feral fury in his eyes receded slightly, replaced by a cold, calculating satisfaction.
"Good," he grumbled, the tension finally leaving his broad shoulders.
He turned away, looking down at the foul sludge coating his chest. "Wait for me to wash this filth off.
Then we go back to the caves." He walked toward the edge of the oasis and waded directly into the deep, clear water.
I stood frozen on the moss, my arms wrapped tightly around my waist. The adrenaline began to crash, leaving me shivering despite the ambient heat of the canyon.
I stared down the narrow path, replaying the horrific image of the shifting rock and the shark teeth.
He warned me. He sat on his sun - baked boulder every single day, guarding the perimeter, while I laughed at his paranoia. I owed him my life.
The water hissed and popped as it met Yarkur's heated scales.
Small plumes of steam rose from the surface of the pool.
He waded deeper, the clear water turning cloudy as the acidic purple slime washed away from his legs and hips.
When the water reached his waist, he stopped.
The ripples smoothed out around his thick, muscular torso.
He glanced over his broad shoulder, his golden eyes catching the sunlight filtering through the canopy.
"Come here," he called out. The harsh command from earlier vanished, replaced by a low, demanding request that sent a different kind of shiver down my spine. "Help me wash."
The shock receded just enough for my Earth - born stubbornness to surface.
My lips parted instinctively to refuse. He had two massive hands; he could clean his own scales.
I did not want to step into the water with him, especially not while my nerves still felt raw and exposed.
Before I could voice the thought, Yarkur tilted his head.
A knowing, arrogant smirk curved his dark lips, flashing a hint of his sharp teeth.
"I saved your life, little human," he reminded me, his tone dry, lacing the words with a heavy, irrefutable truth.
I closed my mouth, the argument dying instantly on my tongue.
He played his card brilliantly, leaving me zero room to refuse.
I let out a long, defeated breath, staring at the thick patches of monster gore still clinging to the hard ridges of his back.
My hands trembled, but my feet moved forward, stepping out of the safety of the shadows.
Well, fine, I thought, walking toward the water's edge.
The transition from the damn moss to the edge of the water felt impossibly heavy.
I stepped into the shallow end of the pool, my leather sandals sinking a fraction into the soft, silty bottom.
The sudden chill of the oasis rushed over my ankles, a sharp contrast to the blistering heat of the canyon air.
I waded deeper. The clear water climbed up my calves, soaking the hem of my linen tunic.
The thin fabric clung instantly to my skin, adding physical weight to the mounting exhaustion settling deep in my bones.
I pushed through the resistance of the water, moving toward the center of the pool.
The water level reached my thighs, then climbed to my waist, creating a ring of gentle ripples that bounced against Yarkur’s massive torso.
He stood facing away from me, a towering wall of muscle and dark armor rising from the quiet surface.
I reached out. My trembling fingers hesitated for a single heartbeat before pressing flat against the center of his broad back.
The sensation hit me instantly. The ambient temperature of the pool was cool and refreshing, but the thick, terracotta - colored scales beneath my palms radiated a scorching, feverish heat.
He absorbed the midday sun like a living stone furnace, holding the fire deep inside his flesh.
I cupped water in my small hands and splashed it over his shoulder blades, letting the clear liquid dilute the foul, purple slime clinging to his armor.
I ran my palms over the hard ridges of his back, scrubbing away the remnants of the ambush predator.
His skin felt magnificent. I traced the interlocking patterns of his scales, marveling at the immense thickness of his hide.
It formed a natural, impenetrable shield against the brutal elements of the Red World, yet the dense, heavy muscle beneath shifted and flexed beautifully with every stroke of my hands.
My palms slid up the massive expanse of his shoulders, working the dirt and grime from the crevices of his thick neck.
The tactile sensation grounded me in reality - the rough, hot texture of the reptilian warrior under my wet, fragile fingers.
