I let the silence sit. Silence is information. The kind of silence, the length of it, what breaks it. Zane's silence is the controlled variety, the kind that comes from choosing words carefully rather than having none. I wait. I've always been better at waiting than anyone expects.
"Why did you stay?" he says finally. "After the Protocol recalled you. After your mission was complete."
The question lands in my chest like a stone dropped in still water. I feel the ripples spread, touching things I've kept settled. The answer is simple. The answer is also the most complicated truth I own.
"Because you're better than what I was sent to destroy."
He stares at me. I can feel him weighing it, turning it, holding it up to the light of everything he knows about me, which is both too much and not enough.
"Is that the truth?"
"It's a truth." I hear how tired my own voice sounds and I can't find the energy to mask it. "The rest of it is more complicated."
"It always is, with you."
That lands. He means it to. Zane Torrence didn't build what he built by being gentle with people, and he's not gentle with me now.
But he's here. He came. He could have sent the details through a terminal message.
He could have let me find out about the contract from a guard or a lawyer or the cold text of an official notification.
Instead he's sitting in my desk chair, asking me questions he's not sure he wants answers to.
That means something. I'm just not sure what.
"The girl," he says, and the temperature in the room drops. Not literally. In me. "Elissa."
I don't move. I've been trained not to react to the things that cut deepest, but the training is a thin skin over something that bleeds freely underneath.
"What about her?"
"She knows about the marriage. She knows you'll be moved to Zalt territory after the contract is signed."
"And?"
"And she hasn't said your name in eight days." He watches me absorb that. "Not once. My daughter, who used to talk about you the way people talk about oxygen, something essential and unremarkable, has stopped saying your name. What do you make of that?"
I make of it what I deserve to make of it. That I took a girl who trusted me without reservation and I became the reason she learned that trust is a weapon other people wield. That the silence where my name used to be is an absence I carved with my own hands.
"I make of it that she's smarter than I gave her credit for," I say, and it sounds like what it is. A deflection wrapped in a compliment wrapped in the kind of self-loathing that passes for honesty when real honesty is too expensive.
Zane stands. The chair scrapes against the floor, a rough sound that fills the room.
"Tomorrow," he says. "The contract. You'll be there at 0900."
"I'll be where I'm told." The words come out clean, obedient, the tone of someone who's surrendered the luxury of preference.
He stops at the door. Doesn't turn around.
His hand rests on the frame for a moment, just long enough that I catch the gesture, the micro-pause that suggests he's wrestling with something beneath the surface.
The kind of tell that only matters if you've spent enough time watching him to know the difference between stillness and struggle.
"I believed you, once." His voice is pitched low, carrying the weight of something he doesn't want to say but can't quite stop himself from saying. "When you said this was home."
The words hang in the recycled air between us.
Not an accusation. Worse than that, a statement of fact that indicts us both.
He believed me when I promised things I couldn't keep.
And I meant every word, right up until the moment I learned that meaning isn't the same as power, that sincerity is no match for the architecture of the game we're trapped inside.
I don't respond. What would be the point? There's no answer that isn't either a lie or a confession, and he's already made clear which one he prefers.
The door opens. Closes. The lock engages with a soft magnetic click that might as well be a gunshot.
I sit in the silence he left behind and I feel it settle over me like ash. Recycled air. Botanical diffuser. The distant hum of the station's life support doing its quiet, ceaseless work.
He believed me once.
The terrible thing is that I was telling the truth.
They escort me through the station at 1400 hours.
Two guards, armed, bored, treating the assignment with the professional indifference of people babysitting a problem above their pay grade.
I'm cuffed at the wrist, a slim restraint that's more symbolic than functional.
I could slip it in thirty seconds. Everyone involved knows that.
The cuffs are a message for the people we pass: this one is handled.
The corridors here are wider than the detention level.
Better lit. The overhead panels cycle through a warm spectrum that mimics natural light, and the air carries traces of food and bodies and the faint ozone bite of active terminals.
Life. The ordinary commerce of people existing in the same space, going about the business of survival that doesn't involve espionage or political marriages or the specific kind of loneliness that comes from being very good at pretending.
I feel the station around me the way I always have.
A low hum of collective desire that presses against my awareness like a crowd pressing against a barrier.
Someone wants coffee. Someone is angry about a shift change.
Two people in a side corridor want each other, that particular warmth so familiar I barely register it anymore.
A child wants something sweet. A dockworker wants to sleep.
It washes over me in waves, ordinary and relentless, and I let it pass through without latching onto any of it.
This is what the Empri blood gives me. Not the full symphony that a purebred would hear, but enough. Always enough. Enough to know what a room wants before I step into it. Enough to become the thing that's needed.
The common area opens up ahead of us. A transit hub where three corridors converge, lined with vendor stalls and seating clusters and the kind of organized chaos that says this is where people come when they don't have anywhere specific to be.
My guards steer me through the edge of it, keeping to the perimeter, moving at a pace that's efficient without being hurried.
I feel her before I see her.
Not with the Empri sense. Elissa Torrence is human, adopted, no bioluminescence, no empathic signature that registers on whatever frequency I operate on.
What I feel is something older and less useful than ability.
Awareness. The particular attention my body pays to a person it has memorized against my will.
She's sitting at a table near the far wall.
Alone. A training pad in front of her, the kind that tracks combat drills and tactical simulations.
Her posture is different. Straighter. Stiller.
The softness I remember, the way she used to curl into furniture like a cat, that comfortable unselfconsciousness that made her easy to be around, that's gone.
She's sitting like someone who's been taught to be aware of the space around her body.
Like someone who's been told that softness is a luxury she can't afford.
Astra Venn's work. I can see it the way you can see a sculptor's hand in the finished stone.
The stillness, the contained energy, the way her weight is balanced even while seated so that she could move in any direction without wasted motion.
Someone is turning the soft girl into something with edges, and the sight of it twists in my chest like a hand wringing cloth.
She looks up.
Pale grey-blue eyes. No bioluminescence to betray her emotions, no colors shifting beneath her skin to broadcast what she's feeling. Just human eyes in a human face, and they find me across thirty feet of crowded common area with a precision that tells me she knew I was coming. She was waiting.
I should keep walking. My guards are moving, the gentle pressure of escort momentum that says we don't stop here, we're in transit, keep your eyes forward and your feet in motion. I should let them carry me past. I should look away first.
She won't let me.
Her eyes hold mine and in them I see the archaeology of what I did.
Layers of it, each one laid down by a different version of the man I pretended to be.
The first layer is hurt, raw and red, the wound still open despite the weeks.
Under that, anger. Bright and hot and new enough that I know it's a recent development, something she's learning to wield rather than drown in.
And underneath both, something harder. Something I don't have a name for but recognize the way you recognize your own handwriting.
I put that there. Whatever iron she's forging herself into, I'm part of the fire.
Guilt hits me like a fist under the ribs.
Not the abstract, manageable kind that I can file away and examine later from a safe distance.
The real kind. The kind that tastes like copper and sits in the back of the throat.
The kind I'm not supposed to be capable of, because the Protocol trained it out of me, because a chameleon can't afford to feel the weight of the skins he's shed.
I look away first.
My feet keep moving. The guards don't notice anything, or if they notice they don't care. We pass through the common area and into the next corridor and the air changes again, cooler here, less populated, and I can still feel the heat of her gaze on the back of my neck like a brand.
