Chapter 16
Chapter Sixteen
Sam kept his palm on the small of her back and led Grace into the attorney’s office building.
“What are we doing here?” she whispered as they stepped into the elevator.
“Removing any doubt so you know that whatever I say is genuine,” he answered.
“I don’t understand. If you’re here for a prenup, I think you’re putting the cart way before the horse.
Normally, people date before popping the question.
” She stepped out of the elevator onto the attorney’s floor.
Sam led her down the hall, and they were shown into a conference room.
Sam gestured for her to sit, and she did, but he continued to stand.
“Grace. I knew the moment you walked into my office that it was going to take a special guy to make you happy, and I hope like hell that I’m the one you choose because I’ll spend a lifetime trying to do just that.”
“Sam. What are you talking about? I agreed we should date. Why are we here?”
Sam slid a packet in front of her and gestured for her to read. “No matter what happens, or where you and I go from here, I will always, always be there for you and our child.”
“Sam, I’m not—”
“Betty thinks you are.”
Grace rose from her chair and slowly backed away. “Is that why you came to find me? You think I’m carrying your baby?”
“I was coming to find you before Betty blindsided me with the fact that you might be pregnant.” He gestured to the paperwork.
“Those papers seal all of my involvement and promise to always be there for our child, no matter what. I don’t want you to think that the baby was and is the only reason I want to be with you, because it’s not.
I’ll love that baby, no matter what, and I’ll love her mom too, regardless of whether she’s just my girlfriend or agrees to be my wife. ”
“You’ve only known me a few weeks, Sam. You’re talking crazy. Did you let Aunt Betty rub some of her crazy off and onto you? We haven’t even had a real date.”
Sam picked a pen off the table and signed the papers at the bottom. “Our unborn daughter gets everything unless we marry, and then it transfers to you. It’s done.”
“I don’t want your stuff.” He’d lost his mind.
“I was hoping you wanted me, now that you know I’m not dating you because of the pregnancy, and because I really, truly, do want to be with you, Grace. Only you.”
“Think rationally, Sam. What if we don’t even like each other? In a month you could be tired of me.”
Sam’s lips twitched into a smile. “I’ll never tire of you.
You make me smile; you make me laugh; you make my heart feel full, and you’re the best plus-one wedding date I could have ever hoped for.
We’ll take it as slow as you want or as fast as you want.
I could pick out a ring today, or I’ll date you the way you deserve, well, minus the wine.
I promise to spend the rest of my life making both of my girls happy. ”
“Did she say we were having a girl, because Aunt Betty is the founder of her own crazy town? She’s got the fake ID to prove it. She could totally be lying to you. I wouldn’t put it past her to be manipulating you.”
Sam closed the distance between them and pulled Grace flush against his body.
“She can’t manipulate feelings I already have, and it doesn’t matter what gender we have.
I love you, Grace. I never thought I’d be the one to fall so hard, and so quickly, but I did.
It happened. I’ll win you over; you’re worth the effort, even if I have to read all your books to help me convince you to be mine. ”
Grace grinned. “You already have. I have one condition.”
“Name it.”
“Vegas. No wedding, no crazy family, except for a witness. Just you and me in Vegas.”
“Your jet or mine?”
I hope you enjoyed Grace and Sam’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
