Chapter Twenty-Three

Molly

“I’m having a hard time with one of the kiss scenes,” I said, interrupting Preston and Emmett’s breakfast. I pressed my palms to the dining table to hide the way my entire body was shaking.

After Preston’s admission last night, I stayed up, wracking my brain for some way I could help him.

He had feelings for Emmett. I was clearly standing in the way of them being together. Even if they didn’t have feelings for me, I was a clunky third wheel.

They had done so much for me, and I didn’t actually have any problems with my manuscript now that they’d shown me what love could be like. In fact, it sounded pretty dang good.

I even let Juliet read it and she liked it.

But this little white lie would be my thank you to them. If I could just get the words out without crying. My heart felt like it was cracking in half as they both waited expectantly for me to talk.

“What’s the problem?” Emmett asked, getting to his feet. “I can read it—”

“I haven’t even written it.” Not a total lie.

I hadn’t written the scene because it didn’t exist. “I’m having trouble picturing the logistics of it.

Like I know how it feels being kissed—” Without meaning to, I rolled my lower lip between my teeth, remembering the taste of each of them.

“But I want to figure out how to explain it more from a bird’s-eye view. ”

“So, what are you thinking?” Preston asked, eyes narrowing with suspicion.

I gave him a small smile, hoping he wouldn’t hate me after this.

“Can I see the two of you kiss? You know, so I can picture it better?” I scrunched my nose, hoping with all my might this wouldn’t backfire.

I wanted to see them happy, and I couldn’t forget the way Emmett’s voice sounded when he realized he could feel Preston when they were both inside me. This wasn’t a one-sided crush.

Emmett snapped his attention to Preston, confusion flickering across his face for a brief second.

I was sure this would work. They’d been very active participants, openly physical with each other when we’d had sex. Geez. I couldn’t believe that was a sentence I was comfortable thinking.

I had sex with Preston Ledger and Emmett Krause. Multiple times.

An ache built between my legs, but I willed it away. This was about them. Not me. They had given me more than they promised. I needed to stop being so delusional and so greedy.

Maybe living with them had changed me. I was starting to believe in love, even if it wasn’t something that would happen to me. It was something I wanted for Preston and Emmett, and I could be the liaison between them.

Maybe that was my purpose.

I’d bring them together and they could live out their happily ever after.

Seeing them together, it was easy to believe in love. Painfully easy. Agonizingly beautifully easy.

I loved this for them. I hated it for myself.

“If you’re okay with it, I’m okay with it,” Preston said, shrugging like that could conceal how excited he was.

My eyes dropped to his pants, and I had to press my thighs tighter when I saw how hard he was getting. This was the right thing to do, though. They deserved a happy ending together.

And I loved them. That dreadful word I knew would ruin my life.

It was unfortunate I had to fall in love with two people because it would be double the heartbreak getting over them.

Or maybe it would hurt exponentially worse because they’d be in my life, and I would have to see them happily grow old together while I wrote about other people’s love stories.

“Yeah, of course,” Emmett said, his jaw clenching before he ran his tongue along his lip.

They stepped closer, hesitating adorably before Preston clasped his hand behind Emmett’s head and kissed him so passionately my breath left my lungs.

I gripped the table, my knees ready to give out.

Emmett broke the kiss off first, licking his lip again. This time, I knew he was aware of exactly how Preston tasted.

Preston grabbed the back of a chair, eyes dilated and glazed. Emmett got his composure more quickly, grinning as he asked, “How was that?”

“Exactly what I needed,” I choked out. “Thanks.”

And then, like a coward, I ran to my room and cried.
