Chapter 9

Lisette

H oly fuck. Something was wrong with me. I slumped in the chair as I tried to figure out why the fuck I was reacting this way. I knew I had always liked to be tied up. He possessed a well-defined physique, with bulging muscles accentuating his human features. More heat bloomed in my core as I remembered how he felt against me at the counter and his raging erection in his pants. I paced in the kitchen for a few minutes until I felt calmer. Not that I did.

I stepped out of the house, and Nolan was there. “Are you well?” he asked with a dopey, concerned face. Reading his emotions on his pumpkin head differed from a human face. Most of his faces were goofy, scary or neutral.

“Take me to the gardens and tell me what you’ve done.”

Nolan laughed as he grabbed my hand and pulled me down the stairs. He walked me to the stand by the pumpkin patch and waved to the pumpkins. My heart ached at the missing parts of the fence. “I sold a ton. They liked my mask. Kids love it.”

“But it’s not a mask.”

“Nope. I went to the garden and tried to find what was left. The pumpkins were a mess after that night. I got all of that, I tore out all the weeds, and nurtured the soil.”

I laughed as I looked at the other garden behind my house. He did take care of it, too. “I hope you didn’t shit or something to nurture it.”

He huffed. “Of course not. I used magic,” he said defensively. He crouched on the ground and put his hands on the grass. A pulse of wild magic erupted underneath my feet and I fell backwards.

“Holy fuck,” I muttered. My hair stood on its ends as the magic danced around me. He turned around and tilted his head.

Concern crossed his orange face. “Are you okay?” he asked.

Propping myself on my elbows, I sat up slightly. “I don’t think I’m strong enough to withstand your magic. Or you need to give it a bit of control.”

He crawled over me and petted my hair. His hard body pressed against mine, and my heart thrummed in my chest. “I am under control. This is natural.”

An uneasy laugh fills me. “Uh, you’re not natural and friends don’t climb over each other like this. Or tie them up with vines.”

“Are you experiencing your distress again? I smell a bit of your fragrance, but mostly the outside.”

Damn him.

“Get off me. You’re embarrassing me. Maybe I should say this is just natural like you.”

He rolled off me and laid beside me in the dirt. “The growing season is closing. Winter will be upon us in a week or so.”

“Just in time to have a snowy Halloween,” I said as I stared at the clouds above me. “It’s been so warm lately.”

He chuckled and grabbed my hand. My heart lurched as we shared the small touch with each other. “I am not sure what Halloween is.”

“It replaced Samhain. It comes from Irish and Scottish immigrants or I think I heard that once. I’ve never explored the origins fully. I just know a lot of witches go hog wild during this time.”

“The veil is thinner at this time. I know it. It’s in the air.”

I hummed.

“Do I make you uncomfortable?”

“I told you. I think you’re illegal. In some of the magic lessons, I distinctly recall being told that it is against the law to create anything using both magic and living beings. My blood and my magic course through you.”

“But also wild magic. That is different. I am a creature of the wild.”

“And an idiot one at that, because you sure don’t know what an erection is.”

Nolan let go of my hand. He rolled to his side and placed his hand on my stomach where my belly button was. “Or I don’t know what your erection is?”

I batted at his hand and laughed. “I don’t have erections.”

His hand went back to my body as that goofy grin but calculating eyes returned and his hand was even lower, right above my mound. “Then why do you perfume the air like that?” he whispered as his pumpkin head leaned closer to my neck. His hot breath traced down my neck and goosebumps raised on my flesh. A warm tongue slid down my neck and I rolled away. My heart thumped faster in my chest as I pushed myself onto my knees. This was fucked.

Maybe I was fucked after all.
