Chapter 77 Lennox

LENNOX

We had been fighting against Adreona’s army for what felt like days. The arm that held my sword ached, but I ignored the pain, pushing through as I continued to slash through the enemy.

I had decided not to use my magic today—saving it for when I came across Keziq.

Which was proving harder than anticipated.

None of our soldiers had laid eyes on her—from the ground or the sky. Even Declan had taken it upon himself to fly above and see if he could spot her but had no luck.

So we continued forward. I lost myself in the battle. Trying to keep my mind from wandering to what was happening back at camp.

I couldn’t worry about the spell. I had to focus on my task, just as Luce would focus on hers, I had to trust her.

There was no other option.

I let myself pause for a minute as another soldier fell dead at my feet. I looked up, using my hand to shield my face from the sun. They’d be starting the spell any minute now.

Keziq might not die today, but her tie to Luka would be severed and that’s all that mattered.

“Lennox!” Declan’s wings flapped behind him as he descended, dirt kicking up as he landed, his boots a heavy thud on the ground.

“I’ve gotten reports from my soldiers at the frontlines, Keziq is there, she’s killing vampires.”

“If we hurry, we might be able to make it. Strike her while she’s weakest.” I sheathed my sword. “What’s the quickest way to get there?”

“We’ll fly.” Declan reached out his arms.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes, now let’s go so we don’t miss our chance.”

“Okay,” I agreed, letting him scoop me into his arms. I wasn’t going to argue about getting held in the harpy’s arms as he flew me to our location. I doubted the opportunity would ever rise again.

One of his arms wrapped under my legs, the other around my back as he lifted me, his wings flapping behind us.

The ground disappeared as we ascended. “Holy shit, we’re flying.” I slapped a hand against Declan’s chest. “We’re flying!”

“I’m aware.”

“You get to do this all the time, this is new for me, Dec!” I scanned the sky, everyone looked so tiny beneath us. Like tiny play soldiers.

Just as quickly as we rose, we descended. Declan quickly set me down on the ground as I tried to get my barrings.

“There she is.” I turned to find the object of Declan’s gaze, the bitch herself. Keziq knelt in the snow, piles of dead vampires littered the ground around her, the blood dripping from their eyes caking their faces. “Lennox Adair, what a pleasant surprise.”

“I can’t say I feel the same.” I could feel Declan’s presence behind me as I approached the witch.

“Where’s your mate?” She glanced behind the hulking harpy. “It’s rare to see one of you without the other.”

“He’s occupied.” I gave her a placating smile. “But you’ll soon find out what he’s up to.” I tamped down on the pressure sitting on my chest. He’ll be fine. I took a deep breath and refocused on the task at hand.

My hand closed around the pommel of my sword. “I—”

I gasped for breath, my hand going to my chest as my heart compressed.

Pain coursed through my limbs, my entire body trembling.

“What have you done?” Keziq hissed.

I managed to stay standing, turning my gaze to Keziq. Her eyes were wide, her face pale as she clawed at her chest and neck like she was trying to climb out of her skin.

“What have you done?”

“Once the spell is complete, you and Luka will no longer be linked.” I panted, as the pain consumed my body.

“No, it’s not possible,” she shrieked.

I forced myself to take a step toward her, my limbs heavy. I grit my teeth as I moved my other leg. The distance between us seemed so much farther than before.

My palm burned, and the vein in my arm pulsed. I could feel the blood coursing through my veins in the arm where my mate mark rested. My blood felt like it was boiling, trying to burn its way through my skin.

I turned my palm over. My mating mark burned. The vines wrapped around my marriage mark flickered like a flame.

“Lennox, are you okay?”

“I—” Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. My body felt sluggish, each movement slow. My chest rose and fell as I gasped for air.

My eyelids felt heavy, I struggled to keep them open as darkness crept in at the corners of my vision.

“Lennox.”

A scream tore from my throat. I fell to my knees, clutching my chest. My heart—my heart felt like it was ripping itself in two.

The screams continued as I willed the pain to stop.

What was happening?

What was—

What—
