Chapter 6 | And So It Begins
"O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-ey'd monster, which doth mock
The meat it feeds on."
-William Shakespeare, Othello
I stand shifting from one foot to another impatiently and play with my scrunchie, as I gaze at the well-mown green grass topped up with the morning dew beneath me.
I'm at the pack grounds right now, waiting for my trials to begin.
Pack members were training at the grounds since five thirty in the morning.
I had walked in at about six thirty under the guidance of Jake who had volunteered to jog with me here before he went to the pack house.
I had checked for any injuries as soon as I saw him, remembering last night's drama. Thankfully he seemed physically fit.
Chris had waved at me when I walked in. I had jogged fifteen rounds around the ground as warm-up.
I had done some push-ups, squats, planks and lunges.
Chris came by and asked me how I was doing, to which I merely nodded.
He informed me that I had to be at the trial stage at around eight o'clock for my trials.
He said that trials will begin as soon as the Alpha arrives.
That's what I'm doing right now.... Waiting. ..
I silently think of my late-night call with Tessa. I remember her words so clearly.
"Blythe, he doesn't know you. He doesn't understand the background of the rejection, which I think you should tell him.
But if Aaron says not to then I don't know.
Maverick still cares for you. He didn't yet accept your rejection.
I think you should stay there. At least being closer to your mate will calm your wolf.
And perhaps you guys could even try. It's your decision.
Remember if you choose to stay, you do have to let him in your life and secrets one day.
You have to tell him all the reasons why.
Trials won't be a great deal for you. Kick some ass for me, Blee. Love you"
I smile to myself thanking the goddess for such an amazing best friend who knew how to support me when I need it. Goddess, also please don't let her know that I told such thing. She'll go crazy.
Pack members gaze questioningly at me, probably wondering, who the hell I was and why I was smiling to myself like a lunatic. Some even throw me looks as if I'm filth beneath their shoes. Oh please, you don't even know me. And you better not. I glower at them smirking.
All of sudden there is silence except for the scraping of footsteps. And I know that the Alpha has arrived.
Unknowingly my eyes search for him. As my eyes meet his, we gaze. Green to blue. His eyes darken.
Suddenly my shorts and tank top seem to be too provocative.
I blush profusely. He averts his eyes quickly.
I become aware of my surroundings and try to contain my blush.
He dons a dark brown shirt paired with dark beige pants.
So many sweet temptations... My wolf swoons at the sight of his muscles flexing as he strolls gracefully across the ground.
When he reaches the trial stage, Chris jogs over to him.
The trial stage is a circular raised stage, with a ring around it.
It provides a view to all the other pack members in the training ground too.
There is also an adjoining rectangular portion with a podium like structure for the invigilators.
Beneath the podium hangs a metal plate indicating the 'no.
of contestants' and the 'no. of rounds' held.
Beside both of the indications is the number zero.
After a small talk with Maverick, he walks to the podium in long strides.
"Attention everybody." Chris' voice booms across the arena.
Beneath him, beside the 'no. of contestants' indication is the number one.
Everyone becomes silent and attentive. Chris continues, "Today's one and only contestant's acceptation trial will commence now under the overseeing of Alpha Devraux, Gamma Davis, and Elder North.
Blythe Archer, step forward now." I straighten up and take two steps forward.
Chris motions me to come over further. I walk further and stand near the rectangular portion, next to a beady-eyed yet fit man who seemed to be around his fifties.
He's probably elder than that considering he's a werewolf and that werewolves age slower.
"Ms. Archer, the trial will consist of two phases; Physical phase and Logical phase respectively.
Your opponents will be an equivalent she-wolves.
In phase one you have to spar in three rounds.
Basic rules are that one has to pin the other to the ground, but you should not bite at the neck.
In each phase different opponents will be assigned by the invigilators.
Your first opponent will be in wolf form.
Second opponent will be in human form. Third opponent will be your choice, you get to choose whether your opponent should be in wolf form or human form.
You can choose your form at all three instances; wolf or human. Got it?"
I nod my head. The Elder announces that the first phase would begin now. I take a deep breath reminding myself. They're not supposed to know that I have a wolf, do not lose your temper, play low but manage to get through it.
My first opponent is assigned by the Elder.
She is a petite yet fierce looking she-wolf.
Chris asks me which form I'd like to fight in.
Formality, I guess. "Human form." The she-wolf smirks at my response, removes her clothes and shifts into her wolf.
There appears a medium sized light brown wolf with black spots here and there.
She pads closer and stands opposite to me. Chris draws our attention and signaling for the sparring to begin with a flourish. And so it begins.
She lunges for me, I dodge her by bending down. She jumps at me again, I move at inhuman speed to get away. This same action continues for some time. She snarls at me ferociously. I look at her smirking.
She gazed beyond me somewhere. She was trying to divert my concentration. Ha kid! We know these games. Yet I chose to look away. I didn't want them doubting me. As I turned my head, she lunged for my back. I turned as I felt a searing pain go up my spine. She bit me!
A metallic scent filled my nostrils. Blood. My blood. I looked beyond her to see my mate wincing at the pain. He was feeling the pain through the mate bond. That got me. He wasn't getting hurt because of me. Again.
I go for her. Punch after punch thrown. I play low enough for a half werewolf. I pin her to her to the ground in minutes, with a smirk. Her upper legs restrained by my palms. She whimpers in defeat.
Is that a proud smirk on the big bad Alpha's face?
Chris announces my victory in the first round. My next opponent is a broad shouldered, tall, blond she wolf. The scowl on her face tells me she's a tough one. She too is gone in about fifteen minutes, as we both had prowled around for a while.
My third opponent is a brunette. She gives a tight lipped smile at me, which I return.
She seems quite friendly. "Wolf or human?
" Chris asks for my choice. "Human," I say not wanting to be obvious.
I'm sure I can take down a he-wolf in wolf form with ease.
In my human form. As the last round begins, I hear a high pitched squeal piercing the silence.
Both I and my opponent turn to see a red-head sashay towards my mate and put her hands around his neck.
My blood boils and I clench my jaws, my fists already balled up.
He doesn't push her away, just puts his hands around her. 'Is she his sister?" questions my wolf. "Does he even have a sister?" I ask back. But neither their intimacy nor their features seem so. "Blythe!"
That was Chris. He signals for us to begin. My idea of playing low evaporates as my claws emerge. Shoot!
I push my wolf back to the depths of my dark self. My opponent lunges at me as I pull catch her arms and pull them behind her. My mind is still clouded with all the anger, confusions and jealousy. How dare she touch what's mine?
I pin down my opponent in seconds but my fury in me is not restrained yet. My wolf pushes herself in once again. I lose my control as she takes over.
I throw punch after punch even though the human part of me notices that the girl is not fighting back. She lies down in a bloody state breathlessly. The control I search for within myself is out of my reach.
I hear Chris yelling my name to stop. All the voices seem so distant. Chris wraps his arms around my torso pulling me away from the bloody deformed figure on the ground. He pulls me into his arms as I see all the shocked faces of the pack members with widened eyes and hanging jaws.
I pull myself away from him. My wolf gives up the control to me as she backs off. Black spots cloud my vision and I fall into the arms of my mate.
