Chapter 41 – Johnnie

Once dinner ended, Johnnie walked outside to catch a breath of fresh air. Kendall’s pitiful expression tore him up inside. He was fucking up more than anything, but he didn’t know how to fucking save his marriage.

He thought about demanding Kendall keep him company, then changed his mind. No one needed to interfere in how he was handling his marriage. With so many motherfuckers around, more than a few would take it upon themselves to pass their fucking opinions.

Grant and Knox’s argument was a prime example. What should’ve been a conversation between father and son turned into a goddamn free-for-all.

Oddly, Johnnie missed being ‘in’ with Christopher.

Teaming up with him and the guys on Kendall’s behalf because Charlotte had fucked with her reminded Johnnie of…

of all he’d torched for an outcome he really hadn’t wanted.

The brothers aligned with him were scared for a different reason.

They believed the peace agreement was a mistake and worried Bash might somehow exploit it.

They wanted Johnnie to ask Christopher to withdraw it.

That wasn’t possible. That would piss off Bash, who now had a legally binding document.

Johnnie’s hands were tied.

Behind him the door opened. Tossing his cigarette, Johnnie glanced over his shoulder, unsurprised at seeing Tabitha. She usually sought him out, especially at family gatherings.

“Uncle Johnnie,” she purred.

He frowned at her. She was actually his niece, so her flirtations crossed another line.

“I was hoping to talk to Aunt Meggie.”

“And you think I can facilitate that?”

She swayed a little, her alcoholic flush pinking her skin. She’d drunk an absurd amount of wine at dinner.

“You have the power to do just about anything.”

Her acknowledging his abilities pleased him. “What do you need to discuss with her?”

“I went through a lot of trouble for the cabin. I want to know why she isn’t taking me up on my offer.”

Earlier today, Johnnie had searched through Kendall’s desk in her home office. Megan and Christopher weren’t going to Tabitha’s cabin. “They are going to another one,” he said, giving her the details before she asked.

“Can you text me the location?”

“Any particular reason why?”

“I might send a gift to her,” Tabitha responded. “It all depends on if I think she deserves it.”

“I understand that sentiment,” Johnnie grumbled, pulled out his phone, and fired off the text.
