Chapter 44 Havoc

Havoc

The comm goes quiet.

Too quiet.

“Trigger?” I say.

No answer.

My grip tightens on the radio.

“Trigger, report.”

Static.

Then—

“They’re secure.”

The breath I’ve been holding finally leaves my chest.

Not relief.

Not completely.

But enough.

“Status?” I ask.

“Two down. One fled. Sheriff’s on scene.”

I close my eyes for half a second.

Two down.

Which means they didn’t come to scare.

They came to take.

“And Aspen?” I ask.

The name comes out before I can stop it.

A pause.

Too long.

“Shaken,” Trigger says finally.

“But she held it together.”

Of course she did.

That’s who she is.

“And Dylan?”

“Safe, everyone is safe.”

Good.

That’s what matters.

That’s all that matters.

But it’s not.

And that’s the problem.

I run a hand through my hair.

Pace once.

Twice.

Energy I can’t burn off.

Because I’m not there.

Blaze watches me.

“You good?”

“No.”

He nods like he expected that answer.

“Then let’s finish this.”

I look back at the warehouse.

At everything Tank died trying to expose.

“They’re escalating,” I say.

“They already have,” Wolf replies.

I nod once.

Decision locking into place.

“Then we end it faster.”
