Chapter 58 Havoc

Havoc

Extraction takes too long.

Everything feels too slow.

I’m on a stretcher now.

Don’t remember when that happened.

Don’t like it.

Blaze walks beside me.

Still watching.

Still steady.

“You did good,” he says.

“Didn’t feel like it.”

“Yeah,” he replies.

“That’s how you know you did.”

The helicopter blades cut through the air overhead.

Loud.

Relentless.

We’re moving out.

I stare up at the sky.

Clear.

Endless.

And for the first time in a long time…

I don’t think about the mission.

I think about a porch.

A quiet night.

A woman sitting beside me.

“You should be here.”

Her words echo in my head.

Yeah.

I should be.

And now?

I’m going back.
