Chapter 9 - Ranger #2

Delilah sits up, pulling the sheet with her. "We need to get dressed. Face everyone. Oh god, I don't know if I can do this."

"Yes, you can. You faced the Vipers. You survived being chased by them. You can handle breakfast with some bikers who are going to tease us mercilessly but ultimately don't care who's sleeping with who as long as everyone's happy."

"Are you happy?" she asks.

"Yeah, Delilah. I'm happy. Happier than I've been in a long time." I pull her back down for one more kiss. "Now get dressed so we can go face the music."

Twenty minutes later

We’re walking down the hallway toward Phoenix's office. Delilah's wearing jeans and a t-shirt she borrowed from Eden, and her hair is pulled back into a messy ponytail. She looks beautiful and nervous.

Diesel is leaning against the wall outside Phoenix's office, and yes, he's fucking smirking.

"Stop smirking," I tell him again as we approach.

"Can't help it, brother. You look... satisfied."

"I am satisfied. And you look like you need to get laid."

He laughs at that. "Probably. But seriously, happy for you, man. She seems good for you."

"She is." I glance at Delilah, who's gone pink again. "And you were serious? About the love thing?"

"Yeah. But like I said, story for another time." He straightens. "Phoenix is waiting."

I knock once and open the door. Phoenix is behind his desk, Judge standing to his left. They both look up as we enter, their expressions neutral but assessing.

"Ranger. Ms. Moore. Sit." Phoenix gestures to the chairs across from his desk.

We sit. Delilah's nervous energy is palpable beside me, and I take her hand without thinking about it, lacing our fingers together. Phoenix notices. He raises one of his eyebrows but doesn’t say anything about it.

"First things first," he says. "Delilah, how are you feeling? Physically, emotionally?"

"I'm okay," she says. "Better than I expected to be, honestly. Graham, Ranger, he made sure I felt safe."

"Good. That's good." Phoenix leans back in his chair. "We questioned Marcus Vale last night. Extensively. Judge and Brick handled the interrogation."

Judge speaks up. "Vale talked. Gave us everything he knows about the Vipers' current operations, their known associates, and locations they use for meetings and storage. Names, dates, transaction records. He was surprisingly cooperative once he realized cooperation was his only option."

"What about Demon?" I ask, already knowing from Judge's tone that the answer isn't what we want.

"That's the problem," Phoenix says. "Vale doesn't know where Demon is.

None of them do. After we burned down the Vipers' clubhouse, Demon went underground.

Stopped using known locations, cut off communication with anyone who might talk.

Vale says Demon only has a few loyal members with him, contacts people directly when he needs something, and even then it's brief.

Burner phones. Public locations. Never the same place twice. "

Delilah's grip on my hand tightens. "So, he's still out there. Still a threat."

"Yes," Phoenix confirms. "But a diminished one.

Vale gave us enough intel to target the Vipers' remaining operations.

This time, we're coordinating with federal contacts to execute simultaneous raids on their known locations—stash houses, meeting spots, associates' homes.

We won't get Demon directly, but we can destroy what's left of his organization.

Cut off his resources. Isolate him further. "

"How many members does he have left?" I ask.

Judge pulls out a notebook. "According to Vale, Demon lost approximately thirty members in the clubhouse assault and subsequent arrests.

Another twelve scattered, left the state or went underground on their own.

Of the remaining members, Vale estimates maybe fifteen are still actively loyal to Demon. "

"Fifteen," I repeat. "Down from forty something when this started."

"Exactly. And Vale says Demon is desperate to rebuild.

He's been trying to recruit, reaching out to independent riders, former members of other clubs, anyone with muscle and a willingness to get violent.

But word has spread about what happened.

About the Iron Phoenix burning down their clubhouse and scattering their members.

Most people aren't interested in joining a sinking ship. "

Phoenix leans forward. "Vale also told us that several Vipers asked Demon to end this. To call off the war with us, negotiate some kind of truce. They're scared. They know they're outmatched. They've lost too many brothers."

"What did Demon do?" Delilah asks.

"Killed them," Judge says. "Three men who suggested backing down. Demon executed them himself. Made an example. Sent a message that anyone who shows weakness or questions his leadership dies."

The room is silent for a moment, processing that information.

"So, he's not backing down," I say. "He's doubling down. Getting more desperate, more violent, less rational."

"Exactly," Phoenix agrees. "Which makes him more dangerous in some ways but also more isolated. His own people are afraid of him. New recruits aren't materializing. His resources are dwindling. He's losing this war, and he knows it."

"But he's still out there," Delilah says. "Still dangerous."

Phoenix's attention shifts to her, his expression firm but not unkind.

"Which is why you stay under our protection.

Full security protocols remain in effect.

You don't go anywhere without an escort.

You stay within the clubhouse perimeter unless absolutely necessary.

And when we do execute these raids, when we further diminish the Vipers' numbers, you'll be even safer. "

"How long until the raids happen?" I ask.

"Coordinating with the feds takes time. Paperwork, warrants, tactical planning. Not a big fan of it, but I want to make sure they’re decimated.

" Phoenix looks at me directly. "In the meantime, we maintain current security posture.

No one gets complacent. We assume Demon is still active, still dangerous, still looking for opportunities. "

"Understood."

Phoenix stands, and we follow suit. "For now, you both can rest. We're still on high alert, but there's no immediate threat.

Vale's intel is being processed, operations are being planned, but that doesn't require immediate action from either of you.

Delilah, Eden wanted to get you properly set up with more clothes and supplies.

Ranger, you're free to... continue whatever you were doing. "

The knowing look he gives me is impossible to miss.

"Thanks, boss," I say.

We leave the office. Diesel is still in the hallway, talking quietly with Canvas now. They both look up as we emerge.

"Everything good?" Canvas asks.

"Everything's good," I confirm. "Vale talked, gave us actionable intel, but Demon's still in the wind."

"So, business as usual," Canvas says. "High alert, full security, wait for him to make a mistake."

"Basically."

"Well, on a lighter note," Canvas continues, grinning, "Eden wants to meet Delilah properly. Something about making sure she's settling in okay and has everything she needs."

Delilah looks at me, uncertain.

"Go," I tell her. "Eden's good people. She'll take care of you. I'll find you later."

She goes up on her toes and kisses me quickly, in front of everyone, before heading down the hall toward where Eden is waiting.

Canvas watches her go, then looks at me with raised eyebrows. "So. That happened fast."

"Yeah. It did."

"How fast we talking? Like 'we're fucking' fast or 'she's my old lady' fast?"

I consider the question. Consider what I feel when I look at Delilah, when I think about her, when I imagine a future that includes her in it.

"Old lady fast," I admit. "Don't know how. Don't know why. But yeah. She's mine."

Canvas grins. "Welcome to the club, brother. The 'fell stupid fast and don't regret it' club. We have jackets."

Diesel shakes his head. "You're all fucking insane. Meeting someone and deciding they're forever in less than twenty-four hours? That's not love, that's temporary insanity."

"Maybe," I agree. "But if it is, I don't want to be sane."

Canvas claps me on the shoulder. "Come on. Let's get breakfast and let you experience the joy of everyone giving you shit for being loud last night."

"Can't wait."

We head toward the kitchen, and I can already hear voices and laughter and the chaos that is the Iron Phoenix family during breakfast. Somewhere in that chaos is Delilah, being welcomed by women who understand what it's like to find safety in unexpected places.

And I realize Phoenix was right.

This is what we do. We protect people who need protecting. We build something honorable in a world that often isn't. We stand between the vulnerable and the predators.

And now Delilah's part of it.

Part of this family. Part of this mission. Part of my life.

Mine to protect. Mine to keep.

The threat isn't over. Demon is still out there, still dangerous, still hunting. The war isn't finished. But we're ready. Alert. Prepared for whatever comes next.

But now I'm not facing it alone anymore.

None of us are.

We're brothers. We're family. We're the Iron Phoenix.

And we protect our own.

Always.
