Ranked & Ruined
Chapter 1 The Pre-Game Queue and the Toxic Duo
Kai’s voice still cracked when he got too excited, that high, unbroken squeak that refused to drop no matter how many times he cleared his throat. “Yo, queue ranked right now. I’m one win off Global, dude. One. I can literally taste it.”
Cole spun his chair in a lazy half-circle, the soft whir of the high-end cooling fans filling the basement of their mom’s place in a quiet Austin suburb.
RGB strips along the walls pulsed slow purple.
Two matching ultrawide monitors painted the unfinished concrete floor in shifting light.
The air smelled like leftover chili-cheese fries, cold Monster, and the faint metallic heat of graphics cards that had been running for hours.
“Bruh, same. If we get another random who wide-swings mid like it’s a casual, I’m actually throwing my keyboard out the window. ”
From upstairs their mom’s voice drifted down the open stairwell, warm and a little distracted. “Boys, you want anything? I just blended a fresh batch of those iced matchas you both pretend you don’t drink.”
Kai tugged one ear cup of his headset off. The soft memory-foam pad was already warm against his skin. “We’re good, Mom! Ranked night. Don’t come down unless the house is on fire.”
“Alright, just don’t stay up till sunrise again. Love you both.”
He clicked the headset back into place. Instantly the Discord channel snapped into focus—Cole’s breathing, the low thump of a lo-fi playlist someone had left running, the tiny click of keys.
Kai’s fingers hovered over the glowing queue button.
His knee bounced. The chair creaked under him.
He could already feel the familiar low-level buzz in his stomach, the same restless energy he always got right before a ranked grind.
Almost Global. One more win and the badge was theirs.
He clicked.
The timer started counting. Thirty seconds.
Forty-five. Cole scrolled through his inventory on the second monitor, spinning a Doppler AK skin under the soft glow of the desk lamp so the colors caught the light just right.
“If this is another four-stack of silvers who think banana is a suggestion, I’m muting the whole lobby. ”
“Chill. Algorithm has to throw us a bone eventually. We’re too good for this elo.”
Fifty-eight seconds. The tenth slot filled with a soft chime.
Loading screen. Inferno. Terrorist side.
Both boys sat up straighter, chairs rolling forward on the concrete.
The warm-up music kicked in, that familiar low pulse.
Kai bought an AK the second the menu allowed it, spinning in place near T spawn just to watch the skin shimmer.
Cole did the same, the two of them shadow-peeking each other in the pre-round lobby like it was already a flex.
A new name popped into the team list and the kill feed at the exact same moment.
Emmi #streaming has joined the game.
Her voice came through the in-game channel—clear, a little low, confident, the kind of tone that somehow cut through the usual lobby noise. “Hey guys. Let’s have a good one, yeah?”
Kai’s eyes lit up like someone had just dropped a free case in his inventory. He mashed push-to-talk so hard the key clicked twice. “Oh shit. Actual gamer girl in the lobby.”
Cole leaned into his mic, already grinning. “No way. Yo, drop the Twitch. We tryna support. You one of those streamers who leans over the desk every time you get a kill, or do you actually play?”
Kai kept going, voice pitching higher with that same unbroken squeak, the words tumbling out too fast. “For real, link it. We’ll raid after. Boobs optional but heavily encouraged. Chat’s gonna lose their minds.”
There was a short pause—just long enough for both boys to glance at each other across the dual desks, matching smirks already forming.
Then her voice came back, cooler now, edged with something sharp that neither of them bothered to hear.
“You two sound like you’re still waiting for puberty to finish the job. You sure you’re even old enough for this game? Go back to Warzone and argue about loadouts with the other twelve-year-olds.”
The round timer hit zero. The buy phase ended. The match was live.
Kai and Cole both cracked up at the same time, the sound overlapping in Discord and the in-game channel, bright and careless. Neither muted. Neither cared. The basement filled with the easy, entitled noise of two boys who had never once been told no in a way that actually stuck.
Cole was still laughing when he leaned closer to his mic. “Damn, she’s spicy. I like it.”
Kai had already tabbed over to her Steam profile on his second monitor, eyes flicking across the page while his free hand absently adjusted himself under the desk.
The idea of a real girl who played the same game and talked back was enough to send a low, familiar heat crawling through his stomach.
“Chat’s gonna eat this up if she’s live.
Watch. She’s definitely one of those booby streamers. Bet you anything.”
They had no idea the stream was already running. They had no idea every toxic word was being clipped in real time. They had no idea the night had already stopped belonging to them.
Banana was about to get loud.
