Sittin’ Up In My Room

Sittin’ Up In My Room

Harlow

“Ihave a functioning alarm, Mya. You don’t have to wake me up every day.” I was still laying on my side not wanting to move. I was granted a three-day weekend and wanted to spend it counting as many sheep as I could.

“You say that but if it was up to you, you would never leave this bed. This weekend we’re not doing that. I made us reservations at the Four Seasons. They’re having a Valentine’s Day Soiree for us single folk, which I got a pair of tickets to. We will not be alone this year.”

“I’m perfectly fine with being alone, Mya. I’ve been doing it since college.” I sat up stretching and shaking out my curly locs.

Mya was my best friend and the only person that knew where my heart lied. I didn’t date because of the way he always seemed to invade my thoughts. I thought of him more than I did anything else and wished he’d come back just to give me a refill of him. His presence was missed dearly.

She looked at me giving sympathizing glares. I didn’t need for her to feel sorry for me or even have concern. I was good and wanted to stay that way. With work taking most of my time, I managed to think about him only when my day settled and often when I was alone.

I wouldn’t leave my room some days all because the thought of him would consume me and I couldn’t maneuver properly. I cried more than I wanted, and I prayed daily for a solution, but God never gave me one. Cam left one hell of an impression on me.

“Stop looking at me like that. When it’s time for me to move on, I will.”

“It’s been four years friend. I think it’s time.”

“Five since we’re putting a time frame on it. However, I did enough crying last night so let’s not talk about it please. Today, I just want to do any and everything to make me forget.”

“Which means?” she asked with a half-smile.

“I’m down for this party,” I replied.

She jumped with excitement and threw herself onto my bed, landing in my lap. She was the vitamin I needed in my life. I loved how she always made sure I was good and because she was always full of energy, it tended to rub off on me at times. She wasn’t going to leave me alone about this anyway.

“The party isn’t until seven, but we can show up whenever we’re ready. I got us separate rooms as well.”

“How long have you known about this shindig, Mya?”

“About two weeks. I didn’t tell you until you knew for sure your job was going to give you those days off. God works in mysterious ways don’t he.”

“You got that right. Have you decided on what you’re wearing yet?”

“Nope. We’re going shopping and don’t say you’re broke because your parents just sent you an envelope full of money. I’ll go make breakfast while you handle your morning routine.”

She popped up and gave me a quick peck on the cheek before she skipped out of my room. I shook my head and stepped out of bed. I didn’t know what this weekend would hold but I was hoping someone nice could take my mind off the one that slipped away.

Turning on the shower, I let it run to meet the desired temperature. While it heated up, I handled both my mouth and face. My skin was always a challenge on keeping it clear and blemish free but lately I’d been able to manage it.

As I covered my hair with a shower cap, I asked for Alexa to play some tunes. That gave me a little boost for the moment. I stripped down and stepped inside shortly after.

I was surprisingly excited to get the day started.

Most days, I forced myself to get up and then coached myself to be proactive.

My lazy ass preferred my bed and bed only.

I only worked in the office so that my parents wouldn’t be in my face twenty-four seven.

They feared I would fall into depression again.

I allowed the warmth of the falling water to officially wake me up. I showered for approximately twenty minutes before I was stepping back out singing along to Monica. Wrapping up in a towel, I headed for my closet to dry off and throw on a robe so I could join Mya for breakfast.

She was the one that knew how to cook between us two and I was glad of it. I found myself eating out or not eating at all because of the rush I was always in no matter the time of day. If it was left up to me, her little self would’ve starved by now.

After slipping into my robe, I jogged downstairs and saw the spread of food along the kitchen table. It was just us that lived in this house, yet she steady cooked like she was feeding a family of five.

“Who is supposed to eat all of this, Mya?” I questioned shaking my head and grabbing a plate to begin.

“We are. I noticed you didn’t come home with anything last night so I figured you could use a plate or two this morning. Sit.”

I did like she asked while she turned down the tunes she had playing for motivation. Everything smelled delicious so I knew for the first three to five minutes, no discussion would be held. My stomach growling didn’t help the situation. She knew me too well.

Once my plate was heavily coated with food, I said a quick prayer and dug in.

The silence was welcomed as we both filled our mouths with the delectable feast. I could kiss Mya in the mouth the way she made sure the grits were buttery as well as cheesy.

However, our silence didn’t last long. My cell phone disturbed the peace.

“I forgot I left that thing down here.”

I quickly got up from the table and saw that it was my job calling. I hit ignore and blocked their number. They gave me three days and I planned on taking them. Monday morning in office was when we could speak again.

“Let me guess, that was Evers & Evers Real Estate,” she mocked the movie Haunted Mansion and I cackled.

“Bitch you have issues but yeah, that was Everest calling.”

“Well, you’re not going in. You already said you’re going with me to that party so that’s that. He’ll have to do his job for once.”

“Which is why I ignored his call. I want to enjoy myself this weekend.”

“A few drinks enjoy or drive the boat and be a hoe enjoy?” The way I knew she wanted me to agree to the latter was crazy.

I was the girl that didn’t leave the house unless it was for work and when I was home, I was always in bed.

I did want to show Mya that I hadn’t forgot about her or the good times we used to have.

College was our fun days, but it seemed like since we came into our careers, we had to schedule quality time.

I finally had the time, so I was dedicating it to her.

“Whatever makes you happy, sis’.”

Her eyes grew big, and I could see her excitement meter overflowing. Shaking my head, I put on a smile and allowed her to bum rush me with hugs and kisses. I hated her touchy-feely ways but that was her love language.

“Hurry up and eat so we can hit this mall and find the classiest but ratchet outfit we can find. I can’t wait to see what the night brings.”

Truthfully speaking, I was nervous just as much as I was anxious. Being around folk and strictly socializing wasn’t my thing. However, I wasn’t going to switch up on my girl. We both needed to let loose and allow ourselves to step out of the box we’ve been boxed in for quite some time.

“You said the party is tonight, right? Why do we need a room for a one night only thing when we can just come home?”

“Cause if we meet somebody that we want to blow our back out, we don’t have to go far.”

“Now, what the fuck, Mya?” I was genuinely tickled by her response.

“What? I’m just thinking ahead that’s all.” She shrugged her shoulders as if it was no big deal.

“You had intentions on popping p—”

“Did!” she yelled, cutting me off. That brought a hearty laugh out of us both.

I threw my hands up in surrender. She was grown and could do whatever she pleased.

In college, she used to have moments like this where she didn’t give a fuck about morals or values.

She’d let her hair down and do whatever she felt not caring about other’s opinions or feelings behind it.

I wasn’t mad at her for wanting to go with the flow for one night.

“You better be glad I’m all game.”

“Oh, trust me. I’m going to take advantage of this.” The devious grin on her face said we were getting into trouble this evening and I had no debate for it.

We finished eating and proceeded to get dressed. The mall was calling our names and I could use a new scenery as well as some sunlight. Regardless of me being a darker woman, I still required the rays to bring me back to life.

I chose to step out in a sweatpants suit from a local store called Karma due to the weather being thirty something degrees.

I loved to support the black businesses around town and Karma had a small boutique that didn’t get enough exposure.

I put as many people as I could onto it when asked about my fit.

My hair was up in a bun, and I was set to go.

After putting my wallet in my clutch, I grabbed my keys and jogged downstairs to wait for Mya. Unlike her and most females, I dressed quickly. That could be because I preferred the everyday look more than dressing to impress. I wasn’t trying to grab anyone’s attention to be honest.

I began to scroll though my Facebook and stopped scrolling when I saw his name.

Cam was a man that went without social media.

He was a quiet guy and kept his life private.

However, I believe he posted so that I could be aware that he was back.

I hadn’t seen him since he uttered “I’ll see you later” after our very last date.

The following morning, he’d withdrawn from school, changed his number, and left the state.

No one, not even Ace who was his best friend heard from him again. That brought on so much heartbreak.
