Chapter 18 #2
We head to Redmond’s Soul Food. I’ve had dinner from here a few times but never breakfast. They only serve it on the weekends, and according to her, it’s almost better than their dinner, especially the salmon patties and grits.
She wasn’t lying about the line either. That shit is out the door and it’s only fifteen after nine.
“Damn, what time they open?” I ask as we walk to the line.
“Seven. I told you. This breakfast is the truth. The line will move fast though.” An employee walks out with small menus in hand and gives them to those in line who need one.
Most already know what they are ordering, but since this is my first time here for breakfast, I take one.
“Order what you want. The croquettes and grits come with either two or three. I’ll get three so you can taste one and still get what you want,” she says.
“Bet. I’m looking at this catfish and grits.”
The line moves a few times, and after fifteen minutes, we order at the counter then find a two-person booth along the wall.
As we wait on our food, she gets her cup of tea together and I check in with Tre.
No one called out and TJ already came in to help.
They’re straight so I relax and just look at my beautiful lady.
Our food actually comes quick and the portions are big as shit. After praying over it, I add hot sauce to my catfish and try it first. It’s good as hell and so is her salmon patty. As we eat, the dining area continues to fill.
“They stop serving breakfast at eleven and people will be in here until the last minute. This was my dad’s favorite place for breakfast,” she says with a smile.
“We would come here at least twice a month before it was expanded to this size. The dining room was so small back then.” She rarely talks about her dad.
He passed when she was little. When she speaks about him it’s always with love though.
I can tell she really loved him. “I wish he was here to walk me down the aisle.” She shrugs then smiles.
“He’ll be there in spirit though,” she adds then quickly changes the subject.
“I texted Shuga. I’m picking her up at six and we’re going to Taste of Italy. ”
“She likes that. Shuga can cook anything but pasta. The simplest shit and she could never get it right when we were little.”
“I thought she can cook anything.”
“Not pasta, none of it. She tried spaghetti one time and that shit was watery and rubbery. None of us ate it,” I say and shake my head at the memory.
“That’s why she likes Reya’s pasta so much.”
“Yeah, ’cause she can’t cook it.” I finish my catfish, grits, hashbrowns, and the big ass biscuit and she eats most of her food but wants lemonade to-go.
While I order it, she goes to the bathroom.
When I meet her back at the table, she’s standing real still and glaring at the door. “Baby, what’s up?” I ask.
“Outside,” she says calmly. I look but only see the people in line. “That’s Kym and him by the second window. I haven’t seen her in five fucking years. Wow. Today of all days.”
I look out and see the side view of a pregnant lady and simp ass looking nigga. The nigga who’s been spared because she asked me to fall back. When the lady turns for a minute, I see her face and there’s a resemblance. She’s my baby’s sister for sure.
“You cool?” I ask.
“Yes, I’m very cool. Let’s get this shit over with,” she says while nodding.
“A’ight. I got you, so let’s go.”
After latching her hand with mine, we make our way out of the restaurant and walk right up to them. Her sister’s eyes expand to the size of golf balls the same way Kyrah’s do when she’s surprised or caught off guard.
“Kyrah, not now,” this nigga has the nerve to say.
“Ay. My man. Don’t say shit to her,” I warn and he squints.
“Who the—” he begins but I crowd his fucking space and get in his face.
“I’m the nigga you don’t want to fuck with. I suggest you fall back and let her say whatever the fuck she wants to say and just listen,” I grit and he actually takes a step back. The palms of my hands itch to yoke his ass up, but when Kyrah touches my arm, I hold back, only for her.
“Kyrah, um…I’ve been wanting to talk to you,” her sister says.
“We do not have shit to say to one another. Nothing. All was said and done the moment you decided to betray me and started fucking my husband. That shit was foul and broke my heart. You’re my sister, my fucking blood, but you choose to throw that all away for a man, a lying, cheating, dirty dick man. ”
As she speaks, my eyes never leave him. I’m patiently waiting for him to flinch, try to talk, or even fucking breathe, because as soon as he does, I’m going to stall his bitch ass out.
“Rah-Rah, I love him,” her sister says and Kyrah laughs.
“Karma is really a bitch. No, I take that back. Fate is really real. Look at us. I’m happy; you look…
I don’t know, sad. I love a man who truly loves me back and we’re getting married and you’re married to him.
If you didn’t do what you did to me, I would pity you, but instead, I just have to laugh ’cause you definitely have the man you deserve.
” She steps closer to her sister then adds, “I will never forgive you for what you did but I guess I should thank you for being a piece of shit sister and fucking this ain’t shit nigga.
You’re stuck with him and I have this fine ass man ready to go to war for me.
And one more thing, you might want to keep your husband away from Blue Mountain Resort; cheating habits are hard to break. ”
“What?” her sister asks but Kyrah doesn’t answer.
She steps toward me instead and hooks her arm around mine. Glaring into her weak ex’s eyes she says, “The next time we see you, I’m not going to hold him back.” Then she looks at me with a smile. “I’m ready now, love.”
“Then let’s dip.”
She squeezes my arm and we walk to my truck. When we reach my passenger side, she throws her arms around my neck and buries her face into my chest. As I hold her, she sighs loudly, “Whew! I really needed that. Thank you for being here.”
“Always but are you really good?” I ask.
“I’m so good. I promise. I have you and they can’t hurt me anymore. Besides, they deserve each other and I never have to see either of them again.”
