Chapter 4
Chapter Four
VANNA
The apartment was relatively modern and, dare I say it, nice.
It was not what I expected of Devil or any of the safe houses the club owned.
The windows were double tinted and I knew you’d not be able to see into it from the outside.
The courtyard on the ground floor was large and beautiful, with a garden to the side and an outside eating area on the other side.
We were on the fourth floor, so whoever was on the ground wouldn’t be able to see up here, and there were no buildings the same height anywhere else in the vicinity.
“This is fancy for the clubhouse,” I said, not wanting to turn to face him.
I was still mad about everything, but I could appreciate the view.
It was better than my apartment. My house wasn’t ready for me to move in yet, or rather I had been putting it off since I broke it off with my last boyfriend, Ethan.
“It’s not the clubhouse’s.”
I turned to face him. He was leaning against the marble countertop of the open plan kitchen, watching me. I hated to admit it but he looked completely at home and goddamn sexy while he was in this relaxed pose.
“Where are we?” I asked him.
“My apartment,” he said simply. “No one knows where I live, and there’s enough security in this building that I know it’s the safest place for you.”
“I think you’re all overreacting a little too much about some graffiti on my window.”
He pushed off the counter and closed the distance between us, pushing me up against the wall.
“Whoever the fuck it was stole important documents and your passport from an undisclosed safe behind a bookcase that you said no one knew about. That’s not random, Vanna, that’s targeted and someone who could want you dead. ”
I knew he was right, but I couldn’t think straight when he was being all macho like this. When I could smell his intoxicating scent in my nostrils, when his eyes were blazing into mine, like they were probing my mind.
He put his hands on the wall beside my head, caging me in, and looked down at my lips then into my eyes. I licked my lips, watching to see if he noticed.
He did. His eyes flicked back to them, then up at me, his eyebrows drawing together like he were battling an inner demon.
Just kiss me.
“Noah…”
“Why the fuck didn’t you call after the first time, Van?” he asked. His voice sounded strangled, like he was battling himself, and it pulled at my chest.
“You know I stepped away from the club. I didn’t want to have to need someone.”
He sighed, and pushed off the wall, giving me space to breathe. I missed his proximity immediately. “Your room is at the end of the hall. I need to go back to the clubhouse for a bit.”
“You’re leaving me here?”
“It’s a locked apartment with security everywhere. You’re safe here, Van.”
“No, I want to go to my apartment.”
“Call me if you need anything,” he said, before he walked to the door. I raced after him, panic in my chest at being locked in here on my own, before the door closed after him. I tried to open it but it didn’t budge.
No, no, no, no.
I grabbed my phone from my pocket and dialled him but he hung up. That arrogant asshole. I didn’t even know my address here so I could call Bria to come and stay with me.
Anger tore through me as I flicked open his contact card and texted him.
You can’t leave me here.
His response was almost immediate.
I’ll be back later. I’ve got all the streaming channels. The passcode for the TV is 1212. Be good.
Fuck that motherfucker. I pulled up Bria’s number but the dial tone never came.
Call disconnected.
What the fuck?
I tried again, and again. Nothing.
Another text came through and I opened it from him.
By the way. You can try to use your data or call others, but I had Bug fix your phone so you can only contact me. Wouldn’t want you getting into any more danger would we?
Fuck!
How the fuck was that even possible?
I paced the apartment, unsure of what I could do. It’s not like I can climb down the side of the building, and the door was solid. I moved through the hall to see if there was anything I could use to get free but his apartment was Spartan at best.
Moving to the bedroom at the end of the hall, I gasped when I saw one of the biggest beds I’d ever seen in my life, complete with black quilts and linen. Two bedside tables sat on either side and a huge flat TV screen was mounted on the wall in front of the bed.
He’d told me to stay in this bedroom, but it looked like his. Why would he do that?
I laid down on the bed and let my eyes drift closed. What a fucking nightmare!
