Chapter One #2

She hadn't drugged him. She hadn't manipulated him into a marriage to steal his wealth.

She had been an innocent bystander, a kind girl who had tried to help a man in distress, and for her kindness, he had locked her in a gilded cage and systematically destroyed her spirit.

For five years, he had looked at his wife with thinly veiled disgust, punishing her for a crime committed by the golden child of his own household.

He had allowed his adopted sister to humiliate her, his mother to berate her, his staff to dismiss her.

And then, she was gone. Torn from the world in a twist of jagged metal, taking her quiet suffering and her unbroken dignity to the grave.

Cameron staggered backward, his knees giving out. He hit the marble floor hard, a gut-wrenching sob tearing free from his chest. He, the untouchable master of the corporate world, curled into himself, clutching his hair as the memories of her quiet tears and resigned smiles shredded his sanity.

I killed her, he thought, the agony so intense it felt like a physical blade in his heart. My pride, my blindness... I killed my wife.

Suddenly, the sharp trill of his cell phone pierced the suffocating quiet of the apartment.

Cameron ignored it, his forehead resting against the cold floor. It rang again. And again. The relentless noise finally forced him to move. He dragged himself up, his limbs feeling like lead, and moved toward the kitchen counter where the device vibrated angrily.

The caller ID flashed a name. His brother.

Cameron swiped the screen, lifting the phone to his ear. He couldn't speak. He had no voice left.

"Cam."

The voice on the other end was fractured, shaking so violently it was barely recognizable. The media's favorite golden boy, the charismatic actor whose smile sold millions in box office tickets, sounded like a terrified child.

"Cam, please," Sebastian whispered, his breath hitching audibly. "Please tell me I've lost my mind. Tell me I'm in a psych ward. Tell me none of it was real."

Cameron’s breath caught. He straightened up, an impossible realization dawning over him. He looked over at the digital clock on the wall. The date glowed back at him.

October 14, 2025.

"Sebastian," Cameron rasped, his voice sounding like cracked gravel. "What do you remember?"

A broken sob echoed through the speaker.

"The morgue," Sebastian cried out, the glamorous facade shattered.

"The silver tables, Cam. I remember the silver tables.

I remember looking down at her. At Harper.

My god, Cameron, she's our sister. She was our blood, our actual sister, and I let them treat her like garbage.

I watched them tear her down to protect that... that monster we invited into our home."

Cameron closed his eyes as a violent shudder wracked his spine. It wasn't just him.

Before he could respond, the double doors of his penthouse elevator chimed, sliding open to reveal the third brother.

Julian stepped into the foyer. The brilliant legal mind, the stoic strategist who never allowed emotion to cloud his judgment, looked like a walking corpse.

He was still wearing the clothes he had worn to sleep, a rare disruption of his meticulous nature.

His face was ashen, his sharp eyes bloodshot and wide with a horrifying clarity.

Julian walked slowly into the living room, staring at Cameron. He held his own phone in his hand. He had clearly been trying to call as well.

"You remember," Julian stated. It wasn't a question. His voice was unnervingly hollow carrying the weight of a man staring into the abyss of his own monumental sins.

"Put Sebastian on speaker," Julian commanded quietly, walking over to the marble island and gripping the edge as if it were the only thing keeping him tethered to the earth.

Cameron pulled the phone from his ear and tapped the screen, setting it down between them.

"Seb," Julian said, his voice trembling for the first time. "Where are you?"

"I'm at the estate," Sebastian replied, his voice echoing slightly over the line, accompanied by the sound of a locking door.

"I'm in my room. I can hear her down the hall.

I can hear Elena laughing with Mother. Cam...

Julian... I swear to god, I want to walk down there and wrap my hands around her neck.

If she touches Harper again, if she so much as breathes in her direction... "

"Do nothing," Julian ordered, though his knuckles were white from his grip on the counter. "Do not engage with her, Sebastian. Do you understand me? You cannot let them know that anything has changed."

"Changed?" Cameron echoed, the word tasting like ash. He looked up at his younger brother. "Julian, it's 2025. The Gala is tonight. None of it has happened yet."

The silence that followed was absolute. It stretched across the penthouse, thick and suffocating, as the three men processed the sheer impossibility of their reality.

They had lived five years in a timeline that had ended in blood, guilt, and a grief so deep it had fractured their souls.

Now, they were standing at the precipice of the very day it all began.

"She isn't here," Cameron said, his voice finally breaking, the stoic CEO surrendering to the devastation.

He looked at Julian, his eyes brimming with unshed tears.

"I woke up, and the bed was empty. I looked for her.

I tore the place apart, Jules. She isn't here because she doesn't know me yet. To her, I'm just a stranger."

Julian squeezed his eyes shut, a tear escaping and tracking down his sharp cheekbone.

"And to Harper, we are the same. We are nothing to her.

She grew up in an orphanage alone, because our mother abandoned her.

And when she finally found her way into our orbit, we punished her for existing.

" Julian let out a harsh, self-deprecating laugh that held no humor.

"I drafted the non-disclosure agreements, Cam.

I threatened her. I used the full weight of our legal empire to keep my own little sister quiet to protect a viper. "

"Never again," Sebastian snarled through the phone, the grief morphing rapidly into a dangerous, protective rage.

"We fix it. We fix all of it. Tonight is the Gala.

Tonight is when Elena slips the narcotic into your drink, Cam.

We have to stop it. We have to expose her before she can even make a move. "

Cameron stared at the glowing numbers on the clock, his brilliant mind slowly clawing its way back through the fog of trauma. The ruthless corporate predator was awakening, but this time, all of his protective instincts were locked onto the two women he and his family had destroyed.

"No," Cameron said softly, a dangerous edge entering his tone. The tears remained, but the devastation in his eyes was hardening into something solid. "We don't just expose her. We let the trap spring, but we control the jaws."

Julian looked at his older brother, reading the shift in his posture. "What are you thinking?"

"Elena wants to orchestrate a scandal to secure her position and humiliate anyone who gets in her way," Cameron murmured, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the empire he commanded.

"She wants to drug me. Let her think she succeeded.

We secure the security footage ourselves this time. We lock down the executive floor."

Cameron placed a hand against the cold glass.

The phantom warmth of Aurelia’s smile flashed through his mind—the smile she used to have before he broke it.

A fierce, desperate yearning tore through his chest. He would give up his wealth, his titles, his very life to see that smile directed at him just once more.

"And Aurelia?" Julian asked quietly. "And our sister?"

"We find them," Cameron said, his voice dropping to a near whisper, with reverence.

Over the phone, Sebastian exhaled a shaky breath. "How do we even approach them? Harper doesn't know we're her brothers. Aurelia is just an employee in the design department. We can't just walk up to them."

"We will figure it out," Julian said, his legal mind already calculating the variables, constructing the invisible walls he would build to protect the sister he had wronged.

"But Cameron is right. Step one is ensuring they never cross paths with this disaster tonight.

I'll access the employee database. I'll pull their home addresses. "

"Do it," Cameron commanded, turning away from the window.

The billionaire was gone; in his place was a man crawling out of the ruins of his own making, ready to go to war against fate itself.

"We failed them. We failed both of them in ways I don't know if we can ever atone for.

But we have been given a second chance, and God help anyone who tries to take it from us. "

Julian nodded, pulling a sleek laptop from his briefcase, his fingers flying across the keys with desperate speed. "I'm bypassing HR directly. It'll take me three minutes to get the residential files for the lower-tier employees."

As Julian worked, Cameron stood frozen in the center of the room. His mind raced back to the morgue, the finality of the tragedy, and then shifted violently to the present. Somewhere in this sprawling, unforgiving city, his wife was waking up. She was breathing. She was smiling.

I am coming for you, Aura, Cameron vowed silently, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides. I will spend the rest of my life on my knees if I have to. But I will never let you suffer again.

The universe had dealt its hand, spinning the wheel of time backward with a strange, cruel humor.

But as the morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the penthouse, the Langsford brothers made a silent, unshakeable pact.

The empire they had built on ruthlessness and pride was no longer their priority.

The only thing that mattered now was redemption.
