Chapter Two #2
But as the brothers watched, a cold, sobering realization began to wash over them.
Harper wasn't walking casually. She was moving with the rigid, hyper-vigilant posture of a soldier navigating a minefield. Her head was on a constant swivel, her eyes darting to the parked cars, the shadows of the alleyways, the faces of the few pedestrians walking past them. Her left hand was locked in a death grip around Aurelia’s wrist, keeping the older girl tucked slightly behind her.
Aurelia was looking at a display of bruised fruit outside the corner store, relaxed, oblivious to the tension radiating from her friend.
"Do you see it?" Julian murmured, his sharp, analytical mind piecing the visual data together with speed.
Cameron swallowed hard, forcing his mind to work past the roaring emotional static in his ears. He pulled his cell phone from his tailored jacket pocket. His fingers flew across the screen, pulling up the direct encrypted line to his executive assistant at Langsford Holdings.
Check the attendance roster for the 16th-floor design division and the commercial real estate tier. Give me the current status of Aurelia Sinclair and Harper Jameson.
Jameson was the last name Harper had, before she was found to be their sister in the fractured timeline.
He hit send. He had reasoned that if they could just intercept the women at the corporate headquarters later that afternoon, under the guise of an executive walkthrough, they could make a controlled, unthreatening introduction.
His phone buzzed in his palm almost instantly.
Mr. Langsford. Both employees called the HR absent-line at 6:00 AM this morning. They cited severe food poisoning. They are not scheduled to be in the building today or tonight.
Cameron stared at the glowing text, the words burning themselves into his retinas. He slowly lowered the phone, turning his gaze back to the sidewalk. Harper was ushering Aurelia inside the small corner store, glancing over her shoulder one final time before the glass door swung shut behind them.
"Aurelia doesn't know," Cameron said, the realization settling into his bones like lead. "Look at her posture, Julian. Look at the way she was smiling. She has no idea who we are, and she has no idea what happens tonight."
"But Harper does," Sebastian said, leaning forward between the two front seats, his eyes wide. "Look at the way she was guarding her. Harper is scanning the street for threats. And they both called in sick. Today of all days. The day of the gala."
Julian nodded slowly, his mind turning the variables over.
"The gala is where the inciting incident occurred. It’s where Elena drugged you, Cameron.
It’s where Aurelia found you. Harper remembers the timeline.
She remembers everything we did. And her immediate reaction upon waking up wasn't to come to us for answers. "
"Her reaction was to pull Aurelia out of the firing line," Cameron finished, a dark awe mixing with his terror.
Harper, the sister he had treated with disdain, was single-handedly dismantling the timeline to protect the woman he loved.
She was bypassing the gala. She was severing the very thread of fate that had brought Cameron and Aurelia together.
If Aurelia didn't go to the hotel tonight, she would never find him in that suite.
The forced marriage would never happen. She would remain a nameless employee on the sixteenth floor, untouched by the Langsford empire.
She's taking her away from me, Cameron thought, panic flaring hot and bright in his chest. If I let them walk back into that apartment, I might never find a way back into her life.
"So what do we do?" Sebastian asked, the desperation leaking into his voice.
"If we approach them now, Harper will recognize us.
If she knows we remember, she will assume we're here to protect Elena again.
She'll take Aurelia and they will disappear.
We have the resources to find them, but if we hunt them down, we'll only prove we're the monsters she thinks we are. "
Julian rubbed his temples, a headache throbbing behind his eyes. "We need a localized strategy. We cannot use the family's power to force them into a corner. We have to alter our own trajectories without triggering Harper's defensive protocols."
Cameron stared at the glass door of the bodega. He could just make out the silhouette of Aurelia standing near the counter, unaware that three billionaires were sitting in a car across the street, rearranging the fabric of the universe around her.
He had destroyed her once by forcing his way into her life, dragging her into a world of vicious opulence and emotional starvation. He would not make that mistake again. This time, he would not demand her presence. He would not trap her with grandfathers and obligations and cold contracts.
"We don't approach them today," Cameron finally said, his voice laced with a calculated calm. The panic had burned away, leaving nothing but an unbreakable resolve.
Sebastian stared at him. "Are you insane? We just let them walk away?"
"We let them walk back to their apartment, where they feel safe," Cameron corrected, his eyes never leaving the storefront. "Harper thinks she has won. She thinks by avoiding the gala tonight, she has successfully removed them from the board. Let her believe it. Let her lower her guard."
"And then what, Cameron?" Julian asked quietly.
"Then, we rewrite the board," Cameron stated, his gray eyes darkening.
"If Harper's sole objective is to keep Aurelia away from the Langsfords, then we approach as anything but.
We don't summon them to the executive floor.
We don't flex our wealth. We bleed into their lives so naturally, so gradually, that by the time Harper realizes we are there, she will have already realized we are no longer a threat. "
Cameron watched as the glass door opened.
Harper emerged first, her eyes sweeping the street once more before she reached back, taking Aurelia’s hand and pulling her safely onto the pavement.
Aurelia was holding a plastic grocery bag, a soft, indulgent smile on her face as she let the younger girl dictate their pace back to the apartment complex.
Cameron leaned his head back against the leather headrest, closing his eyes as a violent shudder wracked his broad shoulders. He had found her. She was alive. She was unhurt.
I will burn this city to the ground before I let anything touch you, he vowed silently in the stillness of his own mind. I will dismantle my own empire brick by brick if it means keeping you safe. You won't see me coming, Aura. But I am never letting you go.
"Put the car in drive, Julian," Cameron ordered softly, keeping his gaze averted as the two women disappeared safely back behind the iron doors of their building. "We need to deal with our beloved sister, Elena first. The real nightmare is about to begin."
