Chapter Thirteen #2
Isla Langsford stepped out of her chauffeured town car, the sharp click of her designer heels echoing against the polished concrete of the executive drop-off zone.
A suffocating, acidic rage simmered in the matriarch’s veins.
The total financial and social embargo Julian had silently orchestrated against her was tightening like a noose.
Her access to the philanthropic trusts had been severed.
Her calls to the board of directors were being routed to automated legal voicemails.
She was being systematically erased from the empire she had helped construct, and she knew exactly who was to blame.
Isla marched through the towering revolving doors of Langsford Towers, her eyes burning with a venomous need for destruction.
She had come to find Harper. She needed to look into the eyes of the bastard child she had thrown away and prove, to herself above all others, that the girl was still worthless.
She needed to assert her dominance, to crack the foundation of the newly formed alliance before it buried her.
As Isla crossed the sprawling, white marble expanse of the ground-floor atrium, a movement near the private, biometric elevators caught her attention.
She stopped, stepping instinctively behind a massive, decorative pillar of brushed steel, her breath catching in her throat.
Cameron had just stepped out of the private elevator, but he wasn't alone.
Aurelia was with him. The young woman was heavily pregnant now, her delicate frame burdened by the undeniable weight of the third trimester.
As Isla watched from the shadows, Aurelia stumbled slightly, a sudden spasm of physical discomfort causing her to gasp and grip the polished railing of the security turnstile.
Before Aurelia could even begin to lose her balance, Cameron moved.
He didn't call for security. He didn't summon an assistant. The untouchable CEO of the conglomerate dropped his expensive leather briefcase directly onto the marble floor and caught her. He wrapped his powerful arms securely around her waist, taking her entire weight against his chest.
Isla stood frozen, her eyes wide as she watched the interaction.
Cameron’s face, usually a mask of glacial authority, was undone. He was whispering to Aurelia, his expression flooded with an agonizing, desperate devotion. He gently brushed the hair from her face, his large hand cupping her cheek, checking her eyes for any sign of lingering pain.
Aurelia nodded weakly, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Cameron didn't hesitate. He swept his arm beneath her knees and lifted her off the ground, cradling her against his chest as if she weighed absolutely nothing.
The sheer, tangible happiness radiating between them—the peace of a man holding his entire universe in his arms—was a physical force that rippled across the atrium.
Behind the steel pillar, Isla felt the breath leave her lungs.
She wasn't standing in a corporate lobby anymore. The marble floor dissolved, replaced by the dark, echoing hardwood of her sprawling, empty marital estate. The air conditioning was replaced by the bitter, drafty chill of a winter night three decades gone.
Isla remembered her own pregnancy. She remembered the sheer weight of carrying Harper in her womb. She remembered the agonizing, shooting pains in her spine, the swelling in her joints, the desperate, hollow need for a steadying hand.
But there had been no hands to catch her.
Her husband, the man who had sworn before God to protect her, had been miles away, tangled in the silk sheets of a clandestine lover.
Isla had endured the physical torment of her pregnancy in echoing isolation, the smell of her husband's expensive cologne masking the scent of another woman’s perfume every time he briefly returned to their cold mansion.
She had been abandoned, left to carry the physical and emotional burden of a fractured marriage alone.
Watching Cameron hold the young designer with such fierce, consuming reverence, a wave of jealousy so toxic, so deeply bitter, rose in Isla’s throat it tasted like bile.
Why her? Isla’s mind screamed, her manicured nails biting violently into the leather of her handbag. Why does this nameless, pedigree-lacking girl get the devotion of a king, while I was left to rot in the dark?
The envy was a living, breathing monster tearing at her internal organs. It wasn't just about the money or the corporate shares anymore. It was a primal, devastating resentment that this girl was experiencing the unconditional, cherishing love that Isla had been denied her entire life.
Blinded by the acid of her own bitterness, Isla stepped out from behind the pillar.
She didn't have a plan. She only had a desperate, vicious need to shatter the beautiful, peaceful tableau unfolding by the elevators.
She marched forward, her heels striking the marble like gunfire, opening her mouth to unleash decades of poison.
She didn't make it five feet.
Two men in immaculate, dark suits materialized from the ambient foot traffic with silent speed. They did not shout. They did not draw weapons. They simply stepped into Isla’s path, forming an impenetrable, physical wall of muscle and tailored fabric.
"Excuse me," Isla hissed, her voice vibrating with aristocratic fury. "Do you have any idea who I am? Step aside immediately."
"We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Langsford," one of the operatives stated, his voice devoid of any emotion, his posture locked and unyielding. "You are in violation of the trespass protocols established by the Chief Financial Officer. You are required to vacate the premises."
The commotion was minimal, but Cameron, possessing the hyper-vigilant instincts of a predator guarding its mate, turned his head.
His stormy gray eyes locked onto his mother.
Isla felt a genuine, physical chill race down her spine. There was no familial recognition in Cameron’s gaze. There was no hesitation. The man holding Aurelia looked at Isla with the cold, dead, impenetrable stare of an executioner looking at a stranger.
He didn't speak. He didn't need to. He simply tightened his protective grip on the woman in his arms, turned his back on the matriarch, and stepped into the private elevator, the steel doors sliding shut to sever the connection permanently.
