Chapter Fifteen #3

Aurelia stood frozen against Julian’s chest, her hands trembling as she clutched the lapels of his suit.

She stared at the scene unfolding in front of her, bewildered by the violent, unprovoked hostility.

She looked at Harper, who was standing in a defensive fighting stance, ready to tear the blonde woman apart with her bare hands.

"What is happening?" Aurelia gasped, her heart hammering wildly. "Who is she? Why is she attacking us?"

Before Julian could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the hall opened.

Cameron Langsford stepped out.

He had been in the middle of a board meeting three floors up when the security alert had flashed across his encrypted tablet.

The CEO did not run; he marched. But the energy radiating from his towering frame was so dark, that the arriving security operatives practically flattened themselves against the walls to get out of his way.

Cameron took in the scene in a fraction of a second. He saw Sebastian pinning the thrashing, screaming woman to the pillar. He saw Harper standing uninjured. And then, his stormy gray eyes locked onto Julian, who was securely shielding a terrified Aurelia and a blissfully sleeping baby Ryan.

The immediate, blinding terror evaporated from Cameron’s blood, replaced instantly by the cold, wrath of a god.

He walked slowly across the lounge, the silence of his approach far more devastating than any shout. He stopped two feet away from the pillar where Elena was struggling.

"Cameron, tell them to let me go!" Elena shrieked, tears of manic frustration streaming down her face. "She ruined my life! She stole my family!"

Cameron didn't look at her. He looked at the captain of his elite security detail, who had just rushed into the room flanked by six heavily armed guards.

"Call the metropolitan police," Cameron commanded, his voice a dead, hollow monotone that sent shivers down the spines of everyone in the room. "Inform the commissioner that there has been an attempted assault on my wife and my son. We are pressing full criminal charges."

"You can't do this!" Elena sobbed, desperately trying to play the victim, her tone shifting into a pathetic, weeping plea. "I was just trying to talk to her! They attacked me! Julian, please, you know I wouldn't hurt a baby!"

"Save your breath," Julian interjected, his voice cold and devoid of any mercy. He kept one arm firmly wrapped around Aurelia’s shoulders.

"The encrypted dossier containing your embezzlement, narcotics distribution, and attempted poisoning was digitally transmitted to the District Attorney ten seconds after you breached the lobby turnstile.

You aren't just going to jail for assault today, Elena. You are going for a very long time."

The fight drained out of the blonde woman instantly. She sagged against the pillar, the horrifying reality of her ruin finally crushing the madness from her mind.

Within minutes, uniformed officers flooded the lounge.

Sebastian released his grip, stepping back as the police read Elena her rights and locked steel cuffs around her wrists.

She didn't scream as they marched her toward the service elevators; she simply wept, a broken, defeated ghost fading into the shadows.

The moment the doors closed behind the police, Cameron moved.

He crossed the remaining distance, and Julian instantly stepped aside, relinquishing his protective hold.

Cameron wrapped his powerful arms around Aurelia, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair.

He was shaking, violent tremors wracking his broad shoulders as the adrenaline crashed.

"Are you hurt?" Cameron whispered frantically, his hands running rapidly over her arms, her back, desperate for physical confirmation of her safety. "Did she touch you?"

"I’m fine, Cameron," Aurelia assured him, wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her head against his racing heart. She looked over at the bassinet. "Ryan didn't even wake up. Julian covered us. Harper stepped right in front of her."

Cameron pulled back just enough to look at his siblings.

He looked at Julian, who was straightening his suit jacket, his eyes still scanning the room for threats.

He looked at Sebastian, who was rubbing his wrists, his jaw set in a hard, protective line.

And he looked at Harper, the fierce, brilliant sister who had thrown herself into the line of fire without a single second of hesitation.

Words were insufficient. The gratitude, the overwhelming love that swelled in Cameron’s chest transcended language. The fractured pieces of their past lives had finally been forged into an unbreakable shield of titanium.

Julian stepped forward, reaching into the bassinet. He gently scooped up the stirring infant, supporting Ryan’s head with practiced ease. The baby blinked his eyes, letting out a soft, happy babble at the sight of his uncle.

Julian smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression, and carried the child over to his parents.

"The perimeter holds, brother," Julian said quietly, handing the baby into Cameron’s waiting arms.

Cameron looked down at his son, then at the radiant, resilient woman beside him, and finally at the family standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the sunlit lounge. The nightmare was over. The fortress was complete.
