Epilogue #2
Cameron leaned against the massive mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his chest, projecting the aura of a warlord surveying a prisoner.
Julian sat in a high-backed leather chair, a sleek, encrypted tablet resting on his knee.
Sebastian stood casually by the fireplace, leaning an elbow against the mantle, tossing a silver paperweight from hand to hand.
The combined net worth in the room could have purchased a small nation, but the currency being exchanged was pure, unadulterated intimidation.
"We understand that your grandfather is aggressively pushing for you to assume the role of Chief Executive by the next fiscal quarter," Julian began, his tone polite but razor-sharp.
He didn't look up from his screen. "However, my analytics indicate a fourteen percent vulnerability in your overseas supply chains.
How exactly do you plan to mitigate that exposure without liquidating your domestic assets? "
Winslow swallowed hard, the collar of his tailored shirt suddenly feeling two sizes too small. "We are... we are restructuring the maritime contracts. The domestic assets are insulated through blind trusts."
"Blind trusts require transparency with internal auditors," Cameron interjected, his voice dark and demanding.
He pushed off the desk, taking a slow measured step toward the heir.
"I value transparency above all things, Carrington.
I do not tolerate hidden agendas. In business, or in the personal orbit of my family. "
Winslow felt a drop of sweat trace a slow path down his spine. He took a steadying breath, realizing this interrogation had absolutely nothing to do with maritime logistics.
"I have no hidden agendas regarding your sister, Cameron," Winslow stated, attempting to hold his ground, though his voice lacked its usual commanding resonance. "I have the utmost respect for Harper. She is the most brilliant, formidable woman I have ever had the privilege of knowing."
Sebastian let out a soft, mocking chuckle, tossing the silver paperweight into the air and catching it flawlessly.
"Respect is a baseline requirement, mate.
It doesn't earn you a medal. What we want to know is your threshold for failure.
When the media turns its spotlight on you, when the board demands your resignation, how do you react under fire?
Because if you bring an ounce of public chaos to her doorstep, I will personally ensure your shipping containers rot in the docks. "
"Are you prepared to sign a comprehensive, binding nondisclosure and non-disparagement agreement regarding all internal family dynamics?
" Julian asked seamlessly, his fingers flying across the tablet.
"I have drafted a preliminary document. The penalty for a breach is the total forfeiture of your personal estate. "
Winslow stared at the CFO, horrified. "You want me to sign a legal contract just to take her to dinner?"
"I want you to understand that she is the protected asset of this dynasty," Cameron growled, closing the remaining distance until he was looming directly over the shipping heir.
The fierce, uncompromising devotion of the eldest brother radiated off him like heat from a furnace.
"She has survived battles you cannot even begin to comprehend.
We will not allow a man to walk into her life unless we are absolutely certain he will never be the cause of her tears.
Do we understand one another, Carrington? "
Before Winslow could formulate a response that wouldn't result in his immediate demise, the doors of the study swung open.
"Are you absolutely kidding me?"
Harper stood in the doorway, her hands resting firmly on her hips. Her dark eyes were blazing with a mixture of exasperation and annoyance.
Behind her in the hallway, Aurelia leaned against the doorframe, sipping a glass of sparkling cider. The mother of the heir was failing spectacularly to hide a brilliant, entertained smile, watching the three formidable Langsford brothers freeze like children caught stealing from a cookie jar.
"We are merely discussing international logistics," Julian lied smoothly, though he hastily tapped the screen of his tablet to lock the invasive background dossier.
"You are waterboarding my guest," Harper corrected, marching into the study with her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood.
She stepped directly between Cameron and Winslow glaring up at her oldest brother.
"I leave him alone for fifteen minutes to put Ryan in his crib, and you drag him into an interrogation room? Have you lost your collective minds?"
Sebastian offered a charming, unapologetic shrug. "We were just having a friendly chat about his supply chains, Harps. Nothing malicious."
"He is sweating through a linen suit, Sebastian," Harper sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose. She turned to look at Winslow her expression softening into genuine apology. "Winslow please forgive them. They suffer from a terminal lack of boundaries and an excess of paranoia."
Winslow let out a long, shaky exhale, offering a weak smile. "It’s quite alright, Harper. I believe we were just establishing... baseline expectations."
Aurelia stepped into the room, her gentle presence immediately diffusing the combative energy. She walked over to Cameron, slipping her hand effortlessly into his. The untouchable CEO instantly melted, his rigid posture relaxing as he laced his fingers through his wife's.
"You promised me you wouldn't threaten the guests," Aurelia chided softly, looking up at him with affectionate reprimand.
"I did not threaten him," Cameron murmured, pressing a swift kiss to her forehead. "I merely outlined the consequences of hypothetical failures."
Harper rolled her eyes toward the ornate ceiling, grabbing Winslow by the sleeve of his jacket.
"Come on. I am rescuing you. We are going back to the patio where there are witnesses, and if any of my brothers come within twenty feet of you for the rest of the afternoon, I will personally rewrite the holding company's zoning laws to ruin their lives. "
As Harper dragged the profoundly relieved shipping heir out of the study, Aurelia turned to look at Julian and Sebastian.
"You two are impossible," she laughed, shaking her head.
"We are thorough," Julian corrected, though a faint smile finally touched his lips.

By the time the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sprawling estate in deep shades of violet and crushed gold, the majority of the elite guests had departed.
The grand white pavilions had been cleared, leaving only the tranquil, sprawling beauty of the ancient gardens. The ambient heat of the summer day lingered, softening the evening air.
On the expansive stone terrace extending from the back of the manor, the family gathered in the quiet twilight. Several low fire pits had been ignited, casting a warm, flickering glow across the comfortable outdoor seating.
Cameron and Aurelia sat close together on a plush loveseat.
Aurelia’s head rested on Cameron’s shoulder, her eyes closed in contentment as he gently wrapped a soft woven blanket around her against the evening breeze.
Julian and Sebastian were seated across from them, engaged in a quiet, relaxed debate with George Langsford about the nuances of vintage wines.
A few feet away, at the edge of the terrace overlooking the expansive, darkening lawns, Harper stood in peaceful silence.
Ryan had woken from his nap cranky, but the moment he was placed in Harper’s arms, the tears had ceased. The one-year-old was currently asleep again, his head resting heavily against her collarbone, his tiny, even breaths warming her skin.
Winslow stood beside her, respectfully keeping a slight distance, though his presence was a steady, comforting anchor. He had survived the interrogation. More importantly, he hadn't run away. He was looking at Harper not with the intimidation her brothers had tried to instill, but with a quiet awe.
Harper gently rubbed the sleeping infant's back, her dark eyes sweeping over the terrace.
She looked at her grandfather, a man who had finally found the warmth of family in the twilight of his life.
She looked at Julian and Sebastian, whose laughter rang clear and unburdened in the night air.
She looked at Cameron, whose entire universe was visibly contained within the woman leaning against his chest.
And she looked at Aurelia. The sister of her heart. The woman she had fought so fiercely to protect, glowing with an inner light that could never be extinguished.
Harper took a deep, steadying breath, the cool evening air filling her lungs.
In the darkest corners of her mind, she still carried the ghost of the fractured timeline.
She remembered the blood, the terror, the agonizing sound of shattered glass and broken promises.
She remembered the desperate, hyper-vigilant fear that had driven her every action when she first woke up in this reality.
But as the firelight danced across the faces of the people she loved, Harper realized the suffocating armor she had worn for so long was gone.
There were no more monsters lurking in the shadows. The vipers had been cast out. The trap had been permanently dismantled. The fierce Langsford brothers were no longer threats; they were the impenetrable walls of a fortress built on devotion.
Winslow shifted slightly, his hand gently brushing against hers in the dark. Harper didn't pull away. She allowed her fingers to open, welcoming the quiet, steady warmth of his touch.
The universe had violently shattered, but it had healed perfectly. The timeline was secure. As Harper held the sleeping heir of the dynasty against her heart, listening to the soft, joyful murmur of her family in the beautiful summer night, she finally exhaled the past.
She was safe. They were all safe. And for the first time in two lifetimes, Harper Langsford was at peace.
