9. Bella #3
We fall asleep like that, wrapped in each other’s arms, drawing strength from our connection. And despite the fear and uncertainty, I feel a sense of hope.
We’re going to get through this. Together.
The next few weeks pass in a blur of preparation for the trial. The district attorney’s office is building their case, interviewing witnesses, and preparing exhibits. Adrian and I are both scheduled to testify, and we spend hours going over our testimony with the prosecutors.
“The defense is going to try to discredit you,” the lead prosecutor, a sharp woman named Rachel Mathis, tells me during one of our prep sessions.
“They’re going to paint you as a scorned ex-fiancée with an axe to grind.
They’re going to suggest that you’re working with Mr. Sterling to destroy Marcus out of revenge. ”
“But that’s not true,” I protest.
“I know,” Rachel says. “But that’s their strategy. So we need to be prepared. We need to make sure your testimony is clear, consistent, and focused on the facts. Don’t let them bait you into emotional responses. Stay calm, stay professional, and tell the truth.”
I nod, feeling nervous. “I can do that.”
“I know you can,” Rachel says with a reassuring smile. “You’re going to be great, Bella. Just remember - you’re not on trial here. Marcus is. And the evidence against him is overwhelming.”
Despite Rachel’s reassurances, I’m anxious about testifying. The thought of facing Marcus in court, of having to recount everything that happened, makes my stomach churn.
But I know it’s necessary. I know that my testimony, combined with all the other evidence, will help ensure Marcus is convicted.
One evening, about two months before the trial is set to begin, Adrian and I are having dinner when he reaches across the table and takes my hand.
“I need to tell you something,” he says, his expression serious.
My heart skips a beat. “What is it?”
“I’ve been thinking about what happens after the trial,” Adrian says. “About our future. About what I want.”
“And what do you want?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Adrian stands and comes around the table, kneeling beside my chair. My breath catches as I realize what’s happening.
“I want you,” Adrian says, his eyes locked on mine. “I want to wake up next to you every morning for the rest of my life. I want to build a family with you, a home with you, a future with you. I want to be your partner in every sense of the word.”
Tears are streaming down my face now, and I can barely breathe.
“Isabella Hayes,” Adrian continues, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. “Will you marry me?”
He opens the box to reveal a stunning diamond ring - a princess-cut stone set in platinum, surrounded by smaller diamonds that catch the light and sparkle like stars.
“Yes,” I say, my voice breaking. “Yes, Adrian, yes!”
Adrian’s smile is brilliant as he slides the ring onto my finger. It fits perfectly, like it was made for me. He stands and pulls me into his arms, kissing me deeply, passionately.
“I love you,” he murmurs against my lips. “I love you so much, Bella.”
“I love you too,” I say, laughing and crying at the same time. “I can’t believe this is real. I can’t believe I’m this happy.”
“Believe it,” Adrian says, cupping my face in his hands. “Because this is just the beginning. We have our whole lives ahead of us.”
I look down at the ring on my finger, at the physical symbol of Adrian’s love and commitment. Six months ago, I was standing at an altar in a wedding dress, about to marry the wrong man. And now, I’m engaged to the right one.
Life has a funny way of working out.
That night, we celebrate our engagement in the most intimate way possible. Adrian carries me to the bedroom, laying me down on the bed with a reverence that makes my heart ache.
“My fiancée,” he says, his voice filled with wonder. “I’m going to marry you, Bella. I’m going to make you my wife.”
“And I’m going to make you my husband,” I say, pulling him down for a kiss.
We make love slowly, savoring every touch, every kiss, every moment. It’s different from the passionate encounters we’ve shared before - this is deeper, more meaningful. This is a promise, a commitment, a joining of not just our bodies but our souls.
Afterward, as we lie tangled together, Adrian traces the ring on my finger.
“I had this made for you,” he says quietly. “I’ve been carrying it around for weeks, waiting for the right moment.”
“This was the perfect moment,” I assure him. “Everything about this is perfect.”
Adrian pulls me closer, his arms wrapping around me. “I can’t wait to marry you. To call you my wife. To build a life with you.”
“Me too,” I say, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. “Me too.”
As I drift off to sleep, I think about how much my life has changed. How I’ve gone from broken and lost to whole and found. How I’ve discovered strength I didn’t know I had, and love I never thought I’d experience.
And I think about the future - a future with Adrian, full of possibility and promise.
A future I can’t wait to begin.
