10. Bella #6
A breath blows out of me, my first real breath.
With each “guilty,” I feel a weight lift from my shoulders.
By the time the foreman finishes reading the last of the counts, every one guilty, I’m crying, but they’re tears of relief and vindication.
Victoria’s tears are different. They’re of actual sadness to see him go away.
Even in these two weeks, new evidence came to light - evidence of additional crimes, additional victims. The district attorney decided to pursue additional charges, and Marcus’s legal team has been fighting it every step of the way.
But today, all of that comes to an end. Today, Judge Patricia Barnes will hear the final arguments and deliver the final sentence.
Adrian is beside me, his hand clasped tightly in mine. He’s been my rock through all of this, supporting me, protecting me, loving me. I don’t know what I would do without him.
“Are you okay?” Adrian asks quietly, noticing my tension.
“I’m okay,” I say, though my voice is shaky. “I just want this to be over.”
“It will be soon,” Adrian promises. “And then we can put all of this behind us for good.”
The courtroom is packed. There are reporters, victims of Marcus’s crimes, curious onlookers. Everyone wants to see justice served.
When Marcus is led in, wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, I feel a jolt of satisfaction. He looks diminished somehow, smaller than I remember. Prison has not been kind to him.
He glances around the courtroom, and his eyes land on me. For a moment, we just stare at each other. Then his gaze drops to my stomach, and I see something flicker in his eyes - surprise, maybe, or regret. But it’s gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his usual cold indifference.
I place my hand protectively over my stomach, over the new life growing there. This child, this beautiful life growing inside me, is proof that good can come from even the darkest situations. That love can triumph over hate. That I’ve moved on and built something beautiful with Adrian.
Judge Barnes enters, and we all rise. She takes her seat and surveys the courtroom with her stern, no-nonsense expression.
“We’re here today for the sentencing of Marcus Webb,” she begins.
“Mr. Webb has been convicted of numerous crimes, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, bribery, corruption, embezzlement, fraud, witness tampering, and attempted murder. Additional evidence came to light during the investigation, evidence of further criminal activity spanning several years.”
She pauses, letting her words sink in.
“The prosecution has requested the maximum sentence, to reflect the full scope of his criminal enterprise. The defense has argued for leniency. I have reviewed all the evidence, all the testimony, and all the arguments. And I am ready to deliver my final ruling.”
Judge Barnes is stern as she addresses Marcus, detailing the severity of his crimes and the harm he’s caused.
She turns to Marcus.
“Mr. Webb, do you have anything to say before I deliver my sentence?”
Marcus stands, and for a moment, I think he might actually apologize, might show some remorse. But then he speaks, and his voice is cold and defiant.
“I have nothing to say to this court,” he says. “I maintain my innocence, and I will be appealing this conviction.”
Judge Barnes’s expression hardens. “Very well. Mr. Webb, you have shown no remorse for your actions, no acknowledgment of the harm you’ve caused.
You have demonstrated a complete disregard for the law and for human life.
Therefore, it is the judgment of this court that you receive the maximum sentence the law allows. ”
She pauses, and the courtroom is silent, everyone holding their breath.
“Marcus Webb, you are hereby sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. You will spend the rest of your natural life behind bars. You will never again be free to harm another person.”
The courtroom erupts. Some people are cheering, others are crying. I’m doing both, tears of relief and vindication streaming down my face.
Adrian pulls me into his arms, and I bury my face in his chest, letting the emotions wash over me. It’s over. It’s finally, truly over. Marcus will never hurt anyone again.
As the bailiffs lead Marcus away, he looks back at me one last time. But there’s nothing there - no apology, no regret, just the same cold defiance he’s worn all along. It doesn’t matter now. It’s far too late for him either way.
Judge Barnes bangs her gavel. “This court is adjourned.”
The room dissolves into murmurs, but I barely hear them. Life in prison. Marcus will never be free again. He’ll never hurt anyone else again.
As he disappears through the door for the final time, I feel Adrian’s hand find mine. I look up at him, and he’s smiling down at me with so much love and pride that it takes my breath away.
“Justice,” he says simply.
“Justice,” I agree.
We leave the courthouse hand in hand, stepping out into the bright afternoon sunlight. Outside the courthouse, reporters swarm us, shouting questions. But Adrian’s security team quickly ushers us to the car, and soon we’re driving away, leaving the chaos behind.
And for the first time in what feels like forever, I feel truly free.
