Chapter 25 The Architect’s Fall – Belle

The fire spreads faster than it should.

Unnatural. Deliberate. Like Selena planned for this exact scenario.

“Where is she?” I grab Agent Magro’s arm as he rushes past with an extinguisher. “Selena. Where the hell is she?”

“Last seen heading toward the East Wing before the explosion.” He pulls free. “But that entire section is compromised now.”

The East Wing. I pull up the mental map I’ve been building for weeks. Staff quarters. Storage. The groundskeeper’s shed.

And beyond that, the rocky outcrop where maintenance boats dock during storms.

“She’s running.” I’m already moving, Max catching up beside me. “There’s a service exit near the shed. She’s going for a boat.”

“Belle, the building is on fire.” Max grabs my wrist. “We need to evacuate with everyone else.”

“She can’t escape.” I wrench free. “If she gets off this island, we’ll never find her again. The network rebuilds. Everything Erik died for means nothing.”

Max’s jaw sets. He knows I’m right. “Then we go together.”

We run.

Through corridors filling with smoke. Past agents herding students to safety. Around corners where flames lick at old wood paneling. The heat is intense. Suffocating.

The East Wing is worse. Fire has consumed the upper floors. Support beams groan ominously. Any second this entire section could collapse.

“There!” Max points ahead.

Through the smoke, I catch a glimpse of bloodred fabric. Selena’s gown, the same one she wore to host The Harvest. She’s moving fast despite the formal dress, heading for an exit I didn’t even know existed.

We follow her outside into cool, night air. The contrast is shocking. Inside, inferno. Out here, just ocean wind and crashing waves.

Selena moves along a narrow path cut into the rocks. No hesitation. She’s done this before. Practiced this exact escape route.

The path opens onto a small dock I’ve never seen. Hidden from the main campus by the natural curve of the island. A speedboat is moored there, engine already running.

Of course. She had someone start it remotely. Had contingencies for every scenario.

She’s at the boat when she realizes she’s not alone. She turns and sees us. Her expression doesn’t change.

“Belle.” Her voice is calm, almost pleased. “I wondered if you’d figure it out.”

“You’re not leaving.” I move closer, positioning myself between her and the boat. Max flanks me, blocking the other side.

“Really?” Selena tilts her head. That maternal smile touches her lips despite the chaos behind us. Despite the fire consuming her empire. “And how exactly do you plan to stop me? You’re children playing at being heroes.”

“Federal agents are everywhere. You’re done.”

“Am I?” She adjusts her gown, the red fabric rippling in the wind. “Belle, darling. This isn’t my first crisis. Networks fall. Networks rise. I’ve survived worse than one raid.”

“Erik’s footage is out there. Encrypted. Backed up. Everyone knows what you are now.”

“They know what I’ve allowed them to see.” Selena takes a step closer. Her pale eyes find mine. “You think this ends with me? You think exposing one academy, arresting a few dozen network members, changes the fundamental structure of power in this world?”

“It’s a start.”

“It’s an inconvenience.” Her voice hardens. “The network has existed for generations. It will exist for generations more. With or without me. With or without Shark Bay.”

“Then why are you running?”

The question makes her pause. Something flickers in her expression.

“I’m not running. I’m regrouping.” She smooths her gown. “There’s a difference between retreat and defeat. You should learn it.”

“Teach me then.” I keep my voice steady. “You wanted me as your successor. Wanted to show me how power really works. Here’s your chance.”

Selena studies me. Really looks at me. Like she’s trying to decide if I’m serious or manipulating her.

“You could have been magnificent,” she finally says. “Even now, watching you organize that resistance, use fear and anger as tools, assign roles like chess pieces. It was beautiful, Belle. Pure Architect thinking.”

The words land like she intended. Because she’s right. I did enjoy it. Did feel that thrill of control.

“I did what I had to do.”

“You did what you wanted to do.” Selena moves closer. We’re only a few feet apart now. “Stop lying to yourself. You liked having power over those students. Liked being the one they looked to for direction. Liked feeling superior.”

“That’s not—”

“It is.” Her voice is absolute. Certain. “I’ve been watching you for years, Belle. Since you were eleven years old. I’ve seen you grow. Seen you adapt. Seen you become exactly what your family trained you to be. A strategist. A manipulator. An architect.”

“I’m nothing like you.”

“You keep saying that.” Selena’s smile is knowing. Pitying. “But we both know it’s a lie. You enjoy control. You enjoy moving pieces on a board. You enjoy being the smartest person in the room.”

“Enjoying strategy doesn’t make me a monster.”

“No. But it makes you like me.” She extends her hand. “Come with me, Belle. Right now. Leave this burning academy behind. Learn from someone who’s mastered the game. Become what you were always meant to be.”

“A trafficker of children?”

“An architect of systems.” Her pale eyes bore into mine.

“Someone who understands real power. Who can build empires instead of being crushed by them. The network will be rebuilt. It always is. You could help shape what comes next. Or you could stay here and watch as someone else takes my place. Someone who won’t be as gentle.

As refined. As willing to see your potential. ”

“You think this is gentle?”

“Compared to what’s coming?” Selena’s expression darkens. “Yes. I’m one head of a hydra, Belle. Cut me off, three more grow back. And they won’t care about your intelligence or strategic mind. They’ll only see you as a threat to eliminate.”

“Let them try.”

“How brave.” Her voice drips with condescension. “How foolish. You have no idea what you’re fighting. Who you’re fighting. The Founder will rebuild. And when that happens, you’ll wish you’d taken my offer.”

“The Founder can burn, too.”

Selena laughs. Actually laughs. The sound is cold and sharp. “You don’t even know who The Founder is. What they’re capable of. How deep their influence runs.”

“Then tell me.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you’re proud.” I take a step closer. “You want me to understand the scope of what you’ve built. Want me to appreciate the architecture. Want me to see that running is strategic, not cowardly.”

Her expression shifts. Consideration flickers in her eyes.

“You’re good,” she murmurs. “Very good. Using my ego against me. Exactly what I would do.”

“You taught me well.”

“I did, didn’t I?” Pride colors her voice. “Even indirectly. Even through others. You absorbed every lesson. Every technique. You’re proof that the system works, Belle. That we can create the next generation of architects through careful cultivation.”

“I’m proof that your system creates survivors.” I hold her gaze. “People smart enough to bring you down.”

“Are you though?” Selena’s smile returns. “Because right now, I’m the one with an escape route. With resources you can’t imagine. With connections to power you can’t comprehend. And you’re the one standing on a burning island, thinking you’ve won because you interrupted one event.”

“Selena Harpsons!” Max’s voice cuts through. Though we arrived together, I lost track of him as I was too focused pursuing Selena. “Step away from the boat!”

I turn. Max isn’t alone anymore. Three federal agents appear on the path behind us, weapons drawn.

Selena’s expression doesn’t change. She just stands there in her bloodred gown, perfectly composed.

“You could still come with me,” she says quietly. “Right now. We disappear together. You learn everything. They’d never find us.”

“I’d rather die free than live as a monster.”

“How disappointing.” Selena sighs. “You had such magnificent potential. You still do. But you’re throwing it away for sentiment. For morality. For the illusion that being good matters in a world built on exploitation.”

“Hands where we can see them,” one of the agents commands.

Selena raises her hands slowly. Gracefully. Like she’s performing instead of surrendering. “The network will continue,” she says. “With or without me. It always does.”

“Maybe,” I say. “But not here. Not with these students.”

“You think one raid changes anything?” Her voice remains calm as agents approach with handcuffs.

“You’ve barely scratched the surface, Belle.

The network spans continents. Governments.

Industries. You’ve destroyed one academy.

Arrested a few dozen members. Meanwhile, hundreds more operate in shadows you can’t even see. ”

The cuffs click into place. She doesn’t resist. Doesn’t struggle.

“Ask yourself this,” Selena says as they start leading her away. “Who funded Shark Bay? Who decided it should exist? Who has been pulling strings for generations while architects like me serve as useful shields?”

“The Founder.”

“Find them,” Selena says. “Then you’ll understand the true scope of what you’re fighting. And maybe then, you’ll accept that some battles can’t be won. Only managed. Only survived.”

They take her down the path. Her bloodred gown trails behind her like spilled wine. Her silver hair catches moonlight. She looks almost regal. Almost victorious.

Even in defeat, Selena Harpsons looks like she’s won something.

Max pulls me against him. “You okay?”

“She tried to recruit me.” My voice sounds hollow. “Right until the end. She thought I’d join her.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I wanted to.” The admission tastes like ash. “For a second. When she talked about power and control and never being a victim again. I wanted it.”

“Wanting it doesn’t make you like her.” Max’s arms tighten around me. “Choosing not to take it does. That’s the difference between you and her, Belle. You understand the difference between survival and cruelty.”

“Do I?”

“Yes.” He pulls back to look at me. “You stayed. You chose right. Even when wrong was easier.”

Footsteps approach. Agent Magro appears, slightly out of breath. “We need you back at the main hall. Network members are being processed. Your testimony will be crucial.”

“What about Erik?” The question tears out of me. “Did they recover anything from the fire?”

Agent Magro’s expression shifts to sympathy. “Fire teams are still working on it. But Miss Queen has been informed. She’s with Agent Stone now.”

Luna. God. She must be destroyed.

“We should go to her,” Max says.

I nod. Take one last look at the hidden dock. At the speedboat still idling, waiting for a passenger who’ll never come. At the escape route Selena maintained for decades.

She thought she was untouchable. Thought the network was too big to fall. Thought I’d choose power over people.

She was wrong.

But her words echo anyway. The network will continue. Find The Founder. You’ve barely scratched the surface.

Because she’s right about one thing. This isn’t over.

Not by a long shot.
