Chapter 28 The Proposal – Belle
One Year Later
“Power isn’t something you’re given. It’s something you take.”
My voice carries across the auditorium. Two thousand people watching. Cameras recording for the live stream. This is the keynote at the National Conference on Exploitation Prevention. The biggest platform I’ve had yet.
“For years, people told me I was powerless. My parents. The systems designed to protect me. The predators who saw me as a resource to exploit.” I pause. Let the words land. “They were wrong.”
The audience is silent. Attentive. Hanging on every word.
“Power doesn’t come from wealth or status or connections. It comes from refusing to be broken. From turning your trauma into fuel. From standing up and saying ‘never again’ and meaning it.”
I see Luna in the front row. David beside her. Max three seats over, his dark eyes locked on me with that mixture of pride and hunger I’ve come to crave.
“The Queen-Gallagher Foundation has helped over eight hundred survivors in the past year alone. Eight hundred people who were told they were powerless. Who were exploited and discarded. Who thought they’d never escape the networks that controlled them.”
I move across the stage. Command the space like I’ve learned to command every room I enter.
“But they did escape. They did survive. And now they’re thriving. Building lives. Finding purpose. Reclaiming the power that was stolen from them.”
The presentation screen behind me shows photos. Survivors we’ve helped. Success stories. People who went from victims to advocates.
“This is what winning looks like. Not revenge. Not destruction. But transformation. Taking the worst thing that ever happened to you and using it to protect others.”
I talk about the foundation’s programs. The therapy services. The legal aid. The prevention education we’re bringing to schools across the country.
I talk about Shark Bay. About Selena. About the network that spanned continents and destroyed thousands of lives.
And I talk about how we brought it down. How testimony and evidence and refusing to be silent exposed the truth. How the system that seemed invincible crumbled when people stopped being afraid.
“They want you to believe you’re powerless,” I say, building toward the conclusion. “That the systems are too big. Too entrenched. Too protected to challenge.”
I lean forward. Let my voice drop. Force them to lean in.
“They’re lying.”
The audience erupts. Not yet standing, but the energy shifts. I can feel it.
“Every empire falls eventually. Every system has cracks. Every predator makes mistakes. Your job isn’t to be perfect. It’s to be persistent. To keep fighting. To refuse to give up even when it seems hopeless.”
I straighten. Project confidence. Authority. Power.
“Because you’re not powerless. You never were. You just needed someone to remind you.”
The applause starts before I finish. Builds into a roar. People rising to their feet. A standing ovation that goes on and on.
I stand there. Let it wash over me. Smile the way they expect me to smile. Grateful, humble, and inspiring.
The performance is flawless. I’ve practiced it until every gesture feels natural. Every expression perfectly calibrated.
When I finally leave the stage, Luna is waiting in the wings. She throws her arms around me.
“That was incredible,” she says. “Belle, you were perfect.”
“Just telling the truth.”
“You made two thousand people believe they can change the world.” She pulls back, her emerald eyes bright. “That’s more than telling the truth. That’s inspiration.”
David appears. “The media wants interviews. Three networks. A dozen publications. This is going to be everywhere.”
“Good.” I smooth my dress. “Schedule them for tomorrow. Tonight I need to decompress.”
Max is there when I turn around. He doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t need to. The look in his eyes says everything.
We make our excuses. Leave the conference center. The hotel is two blocks away.
The walk feels electric. Max’s hand in mine. The city lights reflecting off rain-slicked streets. The knowledge that we’re alone for the first time in days.
In the elevator, he pins me against the wall. His mouth finds mine. Hungry. Demanding.
“You were magnificent up there,” he murmurs against my lips. “Watching you command that stage. Watching them hang on your every word.”
“Did it turn you on?”
“You know it did.” His hips press forward. I can feel how hard he is through his pants. “Seeing you powerful. Confident. In complete control.”
“Good.” I push him back. “Because I’m not done being in control tonight.”
The elevator doors open. We make it to our room without attacking each other. Barely.
Max unlocks the door. We’re inside. The lock clicks behind us.
I expect him to reach for me immediately. To pick up where the elevator left off.
Instead, he drops to one knee.
“Belle.” His voice is steady. Serious. “I’ve been carrying this around for three months waiting for the right moment.”
He pulls a box from his jacket pocket. Opens it.
A ring. Simple. Elegant. A single diamond that catches the light.
“Marry me.” Not a question. A statement. A plea. “Build a life with me. Let me spend every day proving I’m worthy of you.”
My heart stops. Restarts. Pounds against my ribs.
This is real. This is happening. Max is proposing.
And I know immediately what my answer is. Not because of love, though I do love him. Not because of sentiment or romance or any fairy tale notion of forever.
But because Max is mine. Completely. Utterly. And I don’t give up what’s mine.
“Yes.”
Max’s face transforms. Pure joy. He slides the ring onto my finger. Stands. Kisses me like I’m oxygen and he’s been drowning.
“I love you,” he says between kisses. “I love everything you are. Everything you’re becoming. You’re stuck with me now. You said yes. No taking it back.”
“I wouldn’t take it back.”
“Good.” His hands move to my dress. “Now let me show my fiancée how I celebrate good news.”
“No.” I catch his wrists. “Tonight I celebrate my way.”
Understanding flares in his eyes. Heat. Submission. Trust.
“Whatever you want,” he says.
“Strip.” I step back. “Slowly. I want to watch.”
Max obeys. His jacket first. Then his tie. Each button of his shirt revealing more of the chest I know by heart. The muscles. The body that’s mine to command.
His pants follow. His underwear. Until he’s standing naked in the hotel room, his cock already hard and flushed.
“On the bed.” I point. “On your back.”
He climbs onto the mattress. Positions himself in the center. Waiting for instructions.
I undress slowly. Let him watch. Let anticipation build until his cock twitches with need.
When I’m naked, I don’t go to him immediately. I stand there. Let him look. Let him want.
“Do you know what I thought about during that speech?” I ask.
“What?”
“This. Coming back here. Having you completely at my mercy.” I move closer. “All those people thinking I’m some inspirational survivor. When really I was imagining all the ways I’d use you tonight.”
Max’s breathing quickens. “Belle.”
“Tell me you’re mine.”
“I’m yours. Completely. Always.”
“Tell me you’d do anything for me.”
“Anything.” His voice is raw and honest. “There’s no line I wouldn’t cross for you. No boundary I wouldn’t break.”
“Even if I asked you to do something terrible?”
“Yes.” No hesitation. “If you asked, I’d do it. I trust you that much.”
“Good boy.” I climb onto the bed. Straddle his thighs without taking him inside yet. “Because tonight I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“You’re mine.” I lean down. My lips brush his ear. “Completely. Utterly. Mind, body, and soul. You belong to me.”
“Yes.”
“Say it.”
“I belong to you.” Max’s hands move to my hips. I let him touch me this time. “Every part of me is yours.”
“Good.” I reach between us. Guide him to my entrance. Sink down slowly. Taking him inch by inch until he’s fully seated inside me.
We both groan. The fullness. The stretch. The perfect fit of our bodies.
“Don’t move,” I command. “Don’t touch me unless I say. Understand?”
“Yes.”
I start to move. Slow and deliberate. Rising until only his tip remains before sinking back down. My hands brace on his chest. My breasts bounce with each movement.
Max’s hands grip the sheets. His jaw clenches. Every muscle straining with the effort of holding still.
“Look at you,” I murmur. “So desperate. So obedient. You’d let me do anything, wouldn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Would you let me hurt you?”
“If it made you happy.”
“Would you let me use you?”
“I want you to use me.” His voice is strained. “Want to be whatever you need.”
I increase the pace. Riding him like my life depends on it. Chasing my pleasure while he watches helplessly.
“Touch my breasts,” I order. “But gently. Like you’re worshipping something precious.”
His hands come up immediately. Cup my breasts with reverent care. His thumbs brush over my nipples. Gentle circles that make them peak.
“Harder.”
He pinches. Not cruel, but firm. The perfect amount of pain mixed with pleasure.
“Good.” My head falls back. “Now your mouth. Suck them.”
I lean forward. Max’s mouth closes around one nipple. His tongue laves the sensitive flesh before sucking hard. His teeth scrape lightly. The sensation shoots straight to my clit.
I grind down on him. Take him deeper. My hand slides between us, finding my clit. Working it in tight circles while I ride his cock.
“Belle.” Max’s voice is muffled against my breast. “I’m close. Too close.”
“Hold it.” I clench around him. “You don’t come until I say.”
“I don’t know if I can.”
“You can. You will.” I ride him harder. Faster. My orgasm building. “Because you’re mine and you do what I tell you.”
Max groans. His hips buck up involuntarily. I don’t punish him for it. Not this time. I’m too focused on my own pleasure.
The orgasm crashes over me. My inner walls clench rhythmically around his cock. I cry out, my hand working my clit through the waves of sensation.
“Now,” I gasp. “Come now.”
Max breaks with a choked groan. His hips thrust up hard as he empties himself inside me. I feel him pulse. Feel his release flooding my pussy.
We stay locked together. Both breathing hard. Both trembling with aftershocks.
When I finally climb off him, his cum runs down my thighs. I lie beside him. Let him see the mess we made.
“I love you,” Max says. His hand finds mine. The one with the engagement ring. “My magnificent, terrifying, perfect fiancée.”
“I love you too.” The words are true. As true as anything I’ve ever said.
“You make me feel alive.” His fingers trace patterns on my shoulder. “You challenge me. You’re the strongest person I know. Watching you take control makes me harder than anything else in the world.”
“You like being dominated.”
“By you? Yes.” No shame in his voice. “I like giving you power over me. I like submitting. I like being yours completely.”
“What if I’m not who you think I am?”
“You’re exactly who I think you are.” Max’s voice is absolute. Certain. “Strong. Brilliant. A survivor who turned trauma into purpose. The woman who gives that speech and means every word.”
He believes it. Completely.
“Whatever happens,” Max continues. “Whatever you need. I’m here. No judgment. No conditions. Just us.”
“Always?”
“Always.”
I pull him closer. Let his warmth anchor me. Let him think he knows me.
Max is asleep within minutes. He’s so trusting and content. My ring catches the light from the window.
I’m engaged. I’m building a life. I’m the face of a foundation that helps survivors.
Tomorrow I smile for the cameras and shake hands and inspire people to believe the system works.
But tonight, in the dark, with Max sleeping beside me and power humming under my skin, I let myself exist without the mask.
I am Belle Gallagher. Survivor. Advocate. Fiancée.
