"That would be me, Dr. Yerba. So, please stop yelling at the O.R. staff. I would like my focus to be centered on the potential medical malpractice suit you're involved in and not add any H.R. complaints to my workload."
I turned, ready to get with whoever thought they could talk to me out the side of their neck in public, but bit back-and I mean literally bit down on my tongue-the retort that was about to fly.
With the mention of my medical malpractice suit, I assumed she was from the legal department.
I still didn’t give a damn. No one had authority to cancel my day without consulting me, but I wouldn’t yell at the person whose job it was to get me out of the farse of a lawsuit.
“Who are you?” I asked staring down at her shapely but toned frame.
She was gorgeous. That fact couldn’t be denied.
Yet, I still didn't like the fact that she took it upon herself to fuck with my schedule. I thrived on cutting. My O.R. was my peace, and after the last few days I’ve had, mending broken bones was my peace.
She let out a little laugh, but it was totally humorless. She even added a little eye roll to let me know she in fact didn’t find anything funny. “I’m Skylar Wise. Your hospital appointed attorney for your medical malpractice lawsuit.”
I heard her name before, and what I knew from my colleagues, the hospital board assigned her to all the high-profile and potentially high-profile cases. So, I knew she had good reason to cancel my schedule. Yet, my ego still wouldn't allow me to completely back down.
"You could have at least sent an e-mail Ms. Wise.”
Her response was pleasant enough, but the delivery. was anything but. "I have conference room 301 booked from noon until. Meet me there in an hour. Bring any records and notes, including handwritten, on Marcus Simpson. Don't be late."
“Until when?” I asked realizing she didn’t state an ending time.
“Until I say so,” she replied, without hesitation.
She turned and walked away just as quickly as she came.
"Oh, and Dr. Aries,” she said as she halted her steps and turned back to face me.
“Maybe you should check your email. However, the confirmed receipt sitting in my inbox shows you not only received an email from my team, but that you opened it.
So maybe you should put those fancy degrees to use. "
Before I could even get a word in, Skylar was around the corner and out of sight.
When I turned back to the O.R. nurses’ station, everyone averted their eyes, letting me know that they were intently listening to the exchange.
I shook my head, inwardly accepting defeat this round, but it wasn't over.
I knew for a fact that I didn't make a mistake on Marcus Simpson's hip replacement.
He was just disappointed with his recovery time.
I was certain that it had nothing to do with my skilled hands. He had to be fucking up on his end.
Any other doctor may have been walking away with their tale tucked between their legs, but I strolled away with my head held high, ready to show Skylar Wise that I wasn't the one to be fucked with.
"Glad you could join me, Dr. Yerba," Skylar said as I walked into the conference room. I knew she was pissed that I was fifteen minutes late, but shit, I had to get something to eat. I was hungry. And since she messed with my schedule, I was going to mess with hers.
"No problem, Ms. Wise," I replied cooly, and plucked a chip from the open bag in my hand and popped it in my mouth.
Skylar rolled her eyes to the ceiling and let out a loud breath. "Please let me know now if you are done with your dick measuring and intimidating tactics."
She wasn’t falling for any of my bullshit.
As mad as it made me; it also turned me the fuck on.
I couldn’t believe my dick was trying to twitch behind the zipper of my slacks.
I usually liked my women sweet and soft as cotton candy, but for some reason today.
.. today, I was getting turned on by aggression.
"I would imagine that being as though I'm the only one with male genitalia in this room, that I would win that measuring contest. Also, I'm not trying to intimidate you. I just thought I'd grab lunch before you held me in a conference room all day."
"Hopefully, that is a true statement!"
"Me being the only one with a dick?" I asked with a raised brow. I knew I was being an asshole, but she was making it too easy.
"Aries! Cut it the fuck out! Act like the refined surgeon you claim to be with published articles, awards, and degrees to show for it."
She was right, but I was still annoyed by the fact that I was in this situation. I wasn't about to make this shit a walk in the park.
"If you want to play games I will assign your case over to another attorney on the legal team, but I assure you, they'll care less about you and your license and focus solely on making sure the hospital looks good."
Skylar walked to the head of the conference table, opened her files, sat down, and crossed her arms over her chest. "Now, you tell me how you would like to proceed with remedying this situation?"
I plopped my ass in a free chair at the table, opened my own file folders, and accepted defeat.
Round two goes to Sky. Damn, she's good , I thought.
"Good choice. Now let's get down to business."
