Chapter 144
Chapter One Hundred-Forty-Four
Robin
Lana details out her instructions, and my mother goes with Jay and the Doctors into the security office, while Falcon and I follow her into her office, with Pete close behind.
We sit down on the couches, Falcon and I opposite Lana and Pete.
“I know it’s been a long night, so we’ll keep it brief.”
“Sure,” Falcon says. “Do you have that basement room secured now? The one with the tunnel?”
“It’s been boarded up, and we have two guards in that area until we can have it sealed off properly.
It’s a huge construction job, but we intend to have the basement filled in with concrete since it seems the only real purpose of having a basement at all was for Warren Corvina to have access to the academy at all hours of the day and night.
” Lana doesn’t sound happy about that realization.
“If you have any better ideas, we’d be happy to hear them. ”
“No,” Falcon admits. “That sounds good to me.”
“Good,” Lana says. “We’re going to have Rob help your mother.
He was able to help you with your memory, and he should be able to help her process her trauma.
Ezra’s going to check her health and the health of her baby.
Hopefully they won’t need to be housed in the medical ward.
I’ve also cleared a new suite for you and your mates.
It’s a two bedroom so it’s a little bigger, and I’m thinking your mother and her child can use your extra room, if that’s okay? ”
“That would be great,” I admit. “I was a little worried about her being alone when she’s in a new place. I’d rather have her close to me. At least until she’s healthy enough to have her own place.”
“Okay, that’s another problem solved. What’s next?
Uh, yeah, we let the Alpha Alliance know about Barrister.
They didn’t previously have him connected to Corvina’s network so it’s a new investigation for them, but they will share anything important that they uncover with the police, when they feel it’s appropriate.
” She sighs softly and looks right at me.
“I’m so sorry I let him in here that first time, Robin.
I thought he was a regular guy. I had no idea he was capable of any of this. ”
“It wasn’t your fault,” I assure her. “No one would have known.”
“I can’t help but feel responsible,” Lana goes on. “I take my role as guardian to the people here seriously. Any kind of security breach is a big deal. I don’t want this to ever happen again.”
“Neither do we,” Falcon says.
“We had a few minutes with the detective and Rob helped her so she shouldn’t be easy for Corvina to possess again. Regardless, we have her on a watch list. If she wants to visit again, we’ll only allow it to happen under armed guard.”
“Rob agreed to work here for a while,” Pete adds. “He’ll be checking out any new visitors to make sure we don’t let someone in who might be a risk.”
It sounds to me like they’ve covered every base.
“There’s one last thing,” Lana says. “Anyone who has any contact with Corvina or his associates from now on needs to be checked out by Rob. For their safety and ours.”
“I think we can handle that,” Falcon says. “Are we good to go now?”
Lana and Pete stand up, Pete heading to the door.
“Of course,” Lana says. “Just wait to see Rob and as soon as he clears you, you can go to your new room. Shayne and Harper already moved your things to the double suite.”
We get up and leave the office, and Pete gives us a quiet, “Bye.”, before he shuts the door on us.
Falcon moves to the wall across from the security room, and I move to lean against the wall next to him. He smiles at me.
“What are you looking forward to the most once we get to our new suite?”
“Seeing Harper and Shayne,” I admit.
“Yeah, me too.” He reaches for my hand.
I link my fingers through his.
We wait for the door to open.
When it does, my mother exits with her baby and with Jay.
“We’ll be a sec,” Falcon tells them. “We’ve got a new suite to move into. Shayne and Harper are already in the new place according to Lana.”
“I’m guessing it’s a bigger suite?” Jay asks.
“Two rooms,” Falcon says as he steps into the security office.
I follow him inside and a security guard I recognize closes the door.
“Hey,” Dr. Morgan says, giving me a small smile. “It’s been a while. How are you doing?”
“All things considered, I’m doing a lot better than the first time we met. How about you?”
“Oh, you know. Life and stuff.” He shrugs.
He’s a tall skinny guy with pale skin, and there’s something awkward about him.
His special talent seems like it would be better suited to a more outgoing person, at a glance, but it takes a certain amount of sensitivity to do what he does, and honestly, I don’t think anyone else could do it any better than he does.
“I don’t know if I really thanked you for the first time we met. You helped me remember my mother. I’m grateful for what you did for me. So, thank you, Dr. Morgan. I’ll never forget it.”
He smiles tightly. “It was nothing.”
“It was everything.”
Without it, I might not have found my mother when Owen heard her singing.
If we’d brushed that moment off as a sound picked up from a radio or something, she would still be trapped in that basement.
“I heard we need to have a pat down,” Falcon jokes, breaking the tension I caused with my gratitude.
Rob laughs. “Oh, no. I’m not doing that again.”
“Thank God,” Falcon says, holding out a hand to him.
Rob takes his hand and looks him in the eyes.
Falcon is still for a few moments, not blinking.
Then Rob lets go and nods.
“He’s clear. No issues.”
“Nice to know. Thanks.” Falcon winks at me. “Your turn.”
I hold out my hand and Rob moves to take it in his.
It’s not the same as the last time, where he gifted me a vision of my mother.
This time all I feel is a tingling of energy flowing between us.
He smiles as he lets go.
“You’re all good. No issues.”
“Thanks.”
“Ready to go?” Falcon asks.
“One thing.” I look back at Rob. “Is my mom going to be okay?”
He nods. “She’s going to heal quickly. She’s the most resilient person I’ve ever met.”
I blow out a breath, and a real, bright smile burns my lips.
“Thank you, so much.”
I hug him on impulse.
I’m not sure he likes it, so I back off quickly.
“Thanks again.”
“Don’t mention it,” he mumbles.
“Ready.” I take Falcon’s hand.
“Thanks, guys. We’ll see you later.”
