Prologue

They told me it was just a job.

A contract, a paycheck, a chance to rebuild my life in a city I once called home.

I don’t remember much from when I lived here—not enough for it to feel familiar. Just fleeting memories of a childhood cut short, of a place that belonged to someone I barely remember being.

But that’s what made it easier.

There were no ties here. No one to ask questions. No one to tell me to be careful.

Because jobs don’t come with clauses you can’t break.

Contracts don’t trap you inside surveillance systems you never agreed to.

And billionaires—at least the normal ones—don’t watch your every move.

But this isn’t normal.

The office is too quiet. The air is too still.

The weight of unseen eyes settles over my skin, making it impossible to breathe.

I turn, pulse hammering, but the room is empty.

The doors are locked. The cameras are watching.

And somewhere in the silence, I finally realize—I was never meant to leave.
