Chapter Nineteen

Sunday, 12 th November

Half past eight the following morning saw Rico driving away from his father’s flat. He tooted his horn to Ralph on the pavement, concern shining from his face even though he was trying to smile. The weather forecast was, in a word, dire, and Dad wouldn’t be happy until the call came that they were all safely back at Lakeside. They’d even talked about leaving the car here and getting the train back north, but that seemed such a lame thing to do. Other people managed to drive through snow, why shouldn’t he? Rico waved to Guido and Julia leaning over their balcony on the top floor to call goodbye, and followed the road round to the girls’ B the highway was blocked with cars. And there was still no sign of Rico.
