CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Sable's energy blazed before anyone could speak.
"Destroy them," she commanded, and the battle began.
The Pale Legion moved like smoke, flowing around attacks, reforming where they were struck. Olivia's spear passed through one of them like it was mist, the creature laughing as it reformed behind her.
"Physical attacks don't work!" Cass shouted.
"Then what does?"
"Essence!" Lucas called. "They're made of Veil-stuff. You need awakened power to hurt them!"
That eliminated most of the team. Only Sable and Lucas had awakened abilities strong enough to damage the Legion. The rest could only defend, dodge, and try not to die.
Olivia rolled beneath a reaching hand of needle-fingers, came up inside the creature's guard, and thrust her spear through where its heart should be. Nothing. The Legionnaire laughed and backhanded her into a wall.
She hit hard, her ribs screaming, her vision swimming. When she could see again, Lucas was glowing.
Not metaphorically. Actually glowing—golden light pouring from his skin, his eyes, his mouth. The Key of Echoes blazed in his hand, responding to his power, amplifying it.
"Lucas, no!" Olivia screamed. "You'll burn out!"
"I have to!" His voice resonated, layered with harmonics. "It's the only way!"
He unleashed a wave of golden light that swept through the chamber like a tsunami. The Legionnaires shrieked, their forms destabilizing, dissolving where the light touched them. The leader staggered back, its shifting face finally settling into something like fear.
"No," it hissed. "Not you. Not the bloodline. You were supposed to join us, Lucas Mercer. Your father understood. He saw the truth."
"My father was a broken man who died because of you!" Lucas shouted. "I will never join you!"
The light intensified. The Legionnaires retreated, dissolving into the shadows, fleeing through gaps in reality. The leader lingered, its needle-fingers pointing at Olivia.
"The small one," it said. "The unexpected variable. We did not see you. We will remember."
Then it too was gone.
Lucas collapsed.
Olivia scrambled to him, ignoring her injuries. He was burning hot, his skin dry, his breathing shallow. The golden light flickered erratically across his skin like a failing neon sign.
"Lucas! Lucas, stay with me!"
"The tree," he whispered. "Heal the tree. The Key... it shows me how."
"How?"
"Blood. Life. Someone has to give themselves. Connect to it. Become the new anchor."
Olivia looked at the World-Tree, at its weeping wounds, at the starlight sap that dripped like tears.
"I'll do it," she said.
"No." Lucas grabbed her wrist with surprising strength. "If you do it, you're bound here. Forever. You can't go back."
"Then we find another way."
"There is no other way. The tree needs a guardian. Someone to replace what's been broken." His eyes met hers, glowing and desperate. "Let me do it. I'm already connected. My blood, my power—"
"No!"
"Olivia—"
"I said no!" She was crying now, angry tears streaming down her face. "You are not sacrificing yourself. Not for me. Not for anyone. We came here together, we leave together. That's the deal."
Sable approached, her own energy dimmed from the battle. "The pathway is closing. We have twenty minutes."
"We're not leaving without a solution," Olivia said.
"Then find one fast."
Olivia looked at the tree. She thought of Valeria Vance, who had once faced an impossible choice—save the timeline or save her partner. She'd found a third option. She always found a third option.
*"The rules exist until someone smart enough rewrites them,"* Valeria had said.
Olivia walked to the tree. She pressed her hand against its bark. It was warm, alive, ancient beyond comprehension. And it was hurting.
"I can't replace you," she whispered. "I'm not strong enough. But maybe... maybe I can help you heal yourself."
She drew her knife—her original knife, the one she'd thrown at the golem what felt like years ago. She cut her palm, pressed the bleeding wound against the tree's bark.
"I'm small," she said. "But I'm stubborn. I don't give up. I keep fighting. And I'll keep fighting for you, tree. So take what I can give, and use it to fix yourself."
The tree shuddered. Its bark grew warm beneath her hand. The starlight sap flowed faster, brighter, and then—Olivia miraculously—it began to glow with something new. Something golden.
Lucas's power. Her blood. The tree's own resilience. They combined, intertwined, became something greater than the sum of their parts.
The wounds began to close.
"It's working!" Cass called. "The tree—look!"
The starlight sap ran clear, then golden, then blinding white. The tower shook. The realm itself seemed to take a deep breath, settling, stabilizing.
"The pathway!" Sable shouted. "It's closing! Move!"
Olivia tried to pull away from the tree, but her hand was stuck, sealed to the bark by something she couldn't see or understand. Panic surged. She pulled harder.
"Olivia!" Lucas was there, his hands on hers, his power flowing into her, into the tree. "Let her go! She gave freely! You can't keep her!"
The tree released her.
Olivia stumbled back into Lucas's arms. They ran—through the tower, through the forest, across the plateau. The silver doorway was shrinking, collapsing. They dove through it together, tumbling into the armoury in a heap of bruised bodies and shattered expectations.
The doorway sealed behind them with a sound like a book closing.
Silence.
Olivia lay on the concrete floor, Lucas's arms around her, her hand still bleeding, her body broken, her mind reeling.
"We did it," Lucas whispered. "The Veil... it's stabilizing. Not sealed, but... healing."
"Good," Olivia mumbled. "Because I'm never doing that again."
Then she passed out.
