CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

The Sovereign's manifestation began with dreams.

Olivia woke sweating, her heart hammering, fragments of nightmare already dissolving. She'd seen a tower of bone, a throne of weeping faces, a figure of infinite darkness wearing a crown of fractured light. And eyes—so many eyes, watching her, knowing her, *hungry* for her.

"Lucas." She shook him awake. "I saw it. The Sovereign. It's coming."

He sat up immediately, alert despite the hour. "What did you see?"

She described it. His expression grew graver with each detail.

"The others are dreaming too," he said. "Sable. The awakened soldiers. Even some of the Covens. The Sovereign is reaching across the Veil, testing us, weakening our resolve before it arrives."

"Can we stop it?"

"We can prepare." He pulled her close, his warmth grounding her. "The compound is being reinforced. Evacuation plans are in place for the civilians. And the Vanguard is mobilizing every fighter we have."

"What about the Key? Can we use it to seal the Veil before the Sovereign comes through?"

"The Archon says no. The Key opens doors; it doesn't close them. To seal the Veil permanently, we need something else. Something we don't have yet."

"Then what do we do?"

"We fight. We hold the line. We protect the people we can protect and trust that we'll find a way." He kissed her forehead. "It's not much of a plan."

"It's the only plan we've got."

The next weeks were a blur of preparation. Walls reinforced with Coven wards. Weapons stockpiled. Civilians evacuated to underground shelters. Every able fighter assigned positions, given orders, prepared for the worst.

Olivia trained until she dropped, then trained more. She practiced phasing through barriers, spear forms, hand-to-hand combat, tactical coordination. She memorized the compound's layout, identified fallback positions, prepared contingency plans.

She also spent time with the people she might never see again. Gloria and her girls, who'd become like family. Dee, who'd taught her that strength came in many forms. Marcus, who'd grown from a street kid into a capable soldier. Aisha, who'd patched her up too many times to count.

"You come back," Aisha ordered, pressing a bundle of medical supplies into Olivia's hands. "I didn't keep you alive this long to watch you die in some apocalyptic battle."

"I'll do my best."

"Your best had better include survival."

Jenna came to see her too, bringing Mr. Whiskers in a carrier. The cat had grown fat on compound rations and regarded Olivia with the supreme indifference of a creature who'd seen the world end and found it boring.

"I heard you're the big hero now," Jenna said, grinning. "Little Olivia, saving the world."

"I'm not saving anything yet."

"You will. You've always been tougher than you look." Jenna hugged her, hard and fierce. "Kick that Sovereign's ass. For all of us."

The night before the expected manifestation, Olivia and Lucas sat on the compound's wall, watching the fractured sky. The cracks had grown worse—larger, more frequent, sometimes showing glimpses of the other realm's violet sky.

"I wrote a letter," Lucas said. "In case I don't make it."

"Lucas—"

"It's not pessimism. It's preparation. I want you to have it, whatever happens."

"I don't want a letter. I want you. Alive. Here. Annoying me with your perfect form and your stupid soap smell."

He laughed, pulling her closer. "I'll do my best to survive, then. For the soap smell alone."

"And the form. Don't forget the form."

"Never."

They sat in silence, watching the sky bleed.

"Olivia?"

"Yeah?"

"Whatever happens tomorrow—I'm glad I met you."

She turned to face him, her small hands cupping his jaw. "I'm glad you saw me. When no one else did."

"I see you," he said. "I've always seen you. The strength. The stubbornness. The ridiculous fictional hero. All of it. And I love all of it."

"I love you too," she whispered. "Now shut up and kiss me before the world ends."

He did. Under a fractured sky, in a broken world, two impossible people found each other and held on tight.

It would have to be enough.
