CHAPTER FORTY

Olivia spent a month at Sanctuary, learning from her father.

The training was nothing like Lucas's combat drills or the Coven's meditation.

It was older, stranger, rooted in instincts that predated human civilization.

Her father taught her to feel the Veil's presence in her bones, to sense disturbances across miles, to channel the tree's energy into healing, protection, even limited manipulation of physical reality.

"The Thornwood gift isn't power," he explained. "It's connection. We don't dominate reality. We harmonize with it. We become part of the pattern rather than forcing our will upon it."

"That sounds very zen for someone teaching me to fight gods."

"Even gods are part of the pattern, Olivia. The Sovereign isn't evil in the way humans understand evil. It's a force of nature, seeking to restore what it believes is the natural order—complete unity, no separation, all things merged into one."

"That sounds like evil to me."

"Because you value individuality. Autonomy. The right to be separate, unique, yourself. The Sovereign sees those things as aberrations. Diseases. It wants to heal the universe by removing all boundaries."

Olivia considered that. "And our job is to maintain the boundaries."

"Exactly. Not because separation is inherently good, but because balance requires it. Too much unity is as dangerous as too much division. The worlds need the Veil. And the Veil needs us."

The training was exhausting but exhilarating.

Olivia learned to extend her phasing beyond herself, creating brief zones of intangibility around her team.

She learned to sense the Veil's condition across distance, feeling for weak points and breaches before they opened.

She learned to channel the tree's energy into her spear, making it glow with power that could harm even the Sovereign's most powerful servants.

Lucas visited when he could, bringing news from the compound, updates on Operation Outreach, reports of creature activity. Each reunion was bittersweet—joy at seeing him, pain at leaving again.

"The Irregulars miss you," he told her during one visit. "Cass is keeping them in line, but she doesn't have your..."

"Charm?"

"I was going to say terrifying intensity, but charm works too."

She laughed, leaning into him. "I miss them. I miss you. But this training... it's important."

"I know. I'm not complaining. Just... visiting."

They walked by the lake, holding hands, and Olivia felt the strange peace of having everything she needed within reach. Her father, alive and teaching her. Lucas, patient and loving. A purpose that mattered.

But the peace couldn't last.

It ended with a message from Sable, delivered by a breathless scout who'd ridden three horses to death getting to Sanctuary.

"Compound Seven is under attack," the scout gasped. "Massive force. Legionnaires, golems, hollowed—thousands of them. The Sovereign's opened a new breach. Bigger than before."

Olivia's blood turned to ice. "Sable?"

"Holding the walls. But she won't hold forever. She sent for you. Said—" the scout paused, "—said 'tell Thornwood her team needs her. Tell her the war is here.'"

Olivia was already moving, gathering her gear, her spear, everything she'd need.

"Olivia." Her father caught her arm. "You're not ready. The training—there's so much more to learn."

"I know. But my team is fighting. My home is burning. And I am done sitting on the sidelines while people I love die."

"Then take this." He pressed a pendant into her hand—a silver tree, its branches reaching toward a fractured circle. "The Thornwood seal. It will amplify your connection to the Veil, help you channel more power than you could alone."

"Dad—"

"Go. Save them. And come back to finish your training."

She hugged him, hard and fierce, then turned to Lucas. "Ready?"

"Always."

They rode through the night, covering ground that had taken days in hours, fuelled by desperation and determination. The fractured sky grew worse as they approached Compound Seven, the violet of the other realm bleeding through in massive patches.

They could hear the battle before they could see it—the roar of creatures, the crack of gunfire, the screams of the dying. The compound's walls were visible, lit by fire and energy, surrounded by a sea of enemies.

"We need to get inside," Olivia said. "Find Sable. Find the team."

"The gates are sealed," Lucas observed. "But the eastern wall—there's damage. A partial collapse."

"Then we go through there."

They fought their way through the enemy lines, Olivia phasing through attacks that should have killed her, Lucas's golden light cutting paths through the darkness. They reached the breach in the wall and climbed through, emerging into chaos.

Compound Seven was burning.

Buildings collapsed. Fires raged. The dead and dying lay everywhere—soldiers, civilians, creatures locked in eternal struggle. In the centre of the compound, Sable stood atop a pile of rubble, her blue energy blazing, holding back a wave of Legionnaires with sheer force of will.

"Sable!" Olivia shouted.

The commander turned, and Olivia saw exhaustion in those glacier eyes. Exhaustion and relief.

"About time, Thornwood."

"What's the situation?"

"Bad. The Sovereign opened a breach directly above us. Legion forces poured through. We've lost half the compound. The civilians are in the shelters, but the shelters won't hold if the walls fall."

"Where's the breach?"

Sable pointed up. "Centre of the compound. Hovering fifty feet in the air. The Sovereign isn't physically present, but its power is flowing through. That's what's driving the attack."

"Then I close the breach."

"How?"

Olivia touched the Thornwood seal at her throat. "I have a few new tricks."

She ran toward the centre of the compound, Lucas at her side, the battle raging around them.

A golem lunged at her; she phased through it, leaving it confused and vulnerable to Lucas's blade.

Hollowed dropped from above; she spun, her spear cutting arcs of golden light that dissolved them on contact.

The breach was a wound in reality, a tear in the sky that wept violet light and birthed nightmares. Olivia could feel it, sense its wrongness, understand its structure in a way she couldn't have a month ago.

"It's not natural," she told Lucas. "The Sovereign forced this open. Used sacrifice—blood magic—to punch through the healing Veil."

"Can you close it?"

"I think so. But I need your help. The Key—we used it before, together. We need to do that again. But bigger."

Lucas understood immediately. He drew the Key of Echoes from his pocket. It glowed silver, responding to his presence, to hers, to the breach above them.

"Together," he said.

"Together."

They joined hands, Olivia's left in Lucas's right, the Key held between them. Olivia reached for her connection to the World-Tree, to the Veil, to the fundamental pattern of reality. She felt Lucas's energy join hers, golden and silver intertwining, becoming something transcendent.

"Close," she whispered. "Heal. Seal."

The Key blazed. Light exploded from their joined hands, rising in a pillar that touched the breach. The tear in reality shuddered, resisted, fought back.

"It's not enough!" Lucas gasped. "The Sovereign's holding it open!"

"Then we push harder!"

Olivia reached deeper than she ever had. She thought of her father, teaching her by the lake. Of Valeria Vance, fictional but fierce. Of every person she'd fought for, every life she'd touched, every impossible thing she'd done because someone needed her to do it.

She was Olivia Thornwood. Guardian of the Threshold. The small warrior who refused to be small.

And she would not let the world end today.

The light intensified, blinding, searing. The breach screamed—a sound of tearing reality, of denied purpose, of rage. And slowly, inch by inch, it began to close.

"Yes!" Lucas shouted. "Keep going!"

Olivia poured everything into the light. Her energy. Her will. Her love. Her stubborn, impossible refusal to accept defeat. The breach shrank, contracted, sealed—

And closed.

The sky snapped back into place, fractured but stable. The Legion forces still in the compound shrieked, their connection to the Sovereign severed, their power fading. Vanguard soldiers rallied, cutting them down, driving them back.

Olivia collapsed.

Lucas caught her, lowering her gently to the ground. "Olivia? Olivia!"

"I'm okay," she mumbled. "Just... really tired."

"You closed a breach. A Sovereign-forced breach. By yourself."

"Not by myself. With you." She managed a weak smile. "Teamwork makes the dream work."

He laughed, relieved and terrified and in love, and held her while the battle ended around them.
