CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

The weeks that followed were a blur of recovery and preparation.

Olivia split her time between Compound Seven and Sanctuary, continuing her training with her father while maintaining her responsibilities as commander. It was exhausting, but necessary. Every day, she learned more about her bloodline, her abilities, her potential.

"The Thornwood gift isn't just about fighting," her father explained during one lesson. "It's about balance. About understanding that separation and connection are both necessary. The Sovereign wants to erase all boundaries. Our job is to maintain them—not rigidly, not absolutely, but wisely."

"How do I know where the line is?"

"You feel it. Here." He touched his chest. "The same place you feel love, and fear, and hope. The Thornwood gift is as much emotional as it is physical. You need to be whole—body, mind, heart—to use it properly."

She practiced sensing the Veil's condition, learning to identify weak points before they became breaches.

She practiced channelling the tree's energy into healing, closing wounds that medicine couldn't touch.

She practiced extending her phasing, creating bubbles of intangibility that could protect her entire team.

But she also practiced being human. Spending time with Lucas, walking by the lake, sharing meals with her father. Laughing with Gloria, sparring with Cass, listening to Dee's prison stories that somehow always turned into life lessons.

"You're different," Lucas observed one evening, as they sat on the compound wall watching the sunset. The sky was still fractured, but less so. Patches of normal blue appeared between the cracks.

"How?"

"Calmer. More centred. You were always fierce, but now... now there's a depth to it. Like you've found your foundation."

"My father says that's the Thornwood gift settling in. Becoming part of me rather than something I use."

"And how does it feel?"

Olivia considered. "Like coming home. Like I've been trying to force myself into a shape that never fit, and now I'm finally becoming what I was always meant to be."

"That's beautiful."

"It's terrifying. The responsibility... Dad says our family has guarded the Veil for ten thousand years. That's a lot of history to live up to."

"You'll live up to it." Lucas took her hand. "Not because of your bloodline. Because of who you are."

She leaned against him, watching the sky slowly heal.

"Lucas?"

"Yeah?"

"The voices you mentioned. The whispers. Have they gotten worse?"

He was quiet for a moment. "They've gotten clearer. I can almost understand them now. And... I think they're trying to tell me something. Something important."

"What?"

"I don't know yet. But I will. Soon." He squeezed her hand. "Whatever it is, we'll face it together."

"Together," she agreed.
