Chapter 44
The light of the upgrade rippled out from the castle's core and swept across the whole domain. Lilith and Giles stood in the central plaza, Bonnie watching from nearby, and together they saw the Territory remade.
The boundary went first. The mist-shrouded forest pressing against the walls receded as though pushed back by an invisible hand, and new land rose from beneath the earth, carpeted in deep-purple moss and clusters of dark shrubs.
The Territory grew by nearly a third, its once-crowded layout spreading into something broader and more orderly.
The walls stretched to match — freshly formed blocks of black stone locking together without a single seam, their faces etched with intricate undead runes that gave off a faint spectral glow.
Then the castle itself began to change. The already imposing structure climbed higher, its towers drawing up taller and sharper, black blades aimed at the sky.
The vine-like carvings on the outer walls turned far more elaborate, every leaf and branch sculpted in such lifelike detail that the stonework seemed to be growing.
Even the Gargoyle statues flanking the entrance woke a little: green light kindled in their empty sockets, and their heads shifted subtly, surveying the Territory like sentries.
The upgrade hadn't radically remade anything. What it had done was layer in an extraordinary amount of detail — and Lilith's curiosity was thoroughly hooked.
"Come on. Let's see what changed inside."
She headed for the castle with Giles, Bonnie hurrying after them. The heavy black-iron doors swung open on their own, and the interior stopped Lilith where she stood.
The Lord Hall on the first floor had grown far larger.
Rough stone tiles had given way to polished obsidian that mirrored the pale-blue flames drifting beneath the vaulted ceiling, and the plain supports overhead were now an open framework of enormous undead bones, fine magical patterns tracing every rib and vertebra in glowing silver.
Great mosaics covered both walls — dark crystal and silver wire worked into scenes of undead hordes sweeping across entire kingdoms.
Bonnie stared at them. "This is a huge upgrade!"
Before, the castle had felt like an abandoned fortress patched up just enough to function. Now it felt like a genuine relic of a forgotten age.
The three climbed the spiral staircase, and the second-floor reception hall told the same story.
The plain stone fireplace had become an elaborate construction of obsidian and mithril, pale flames burning endlessly in the hearth — gentle warmth, no smoke, no harsh heat.
Deep-purple velvet tapestries lined the walls, and matching curtains stirred softly at the windows.
"Damn," Lilith said, pleased. "You'd think the Territory had jumped a whole major Rank." Now this was a castle worthy of an Undead Lord.
Satisfying as the visuals were, they weren't what she actually cared about. Reaching Blue Town granted an exclusive Structure Blueprint — that was the real prize. She opened the Territory interface.
[Territory Name: God of Light]
[Territory Rank: Blue Town]
[Territory Radius: 2,300 ft]
[Territory Privileges: While inside the Territory, you may instantly collect and dismantle resources, rapidly learn eligible skills or magic, teleport to any location within the Territory, and inspect any creature that enters its perimeter.]
[Unlocked Structure: None]
[Upgrade Requirement: 10,000 units of Wood, 10,000 units of Stone, 5,000 Iron Ingots, and 500 Mana Crystals.]
[Prerequisite: Possess at least one Vassal — Completed.]
"Wait." Lilith stared at the last line. "What kind of requirement is that?"
She hadn't expected further Territory upgrades to demand a Vassal. The System was effectively forcing Lords to build up their own populations — no Vassal, no advancing past this point. A brutal restriction, when she thought about it.
"Whatever." No point worrying unless some other requirement blocked her down the road.
A new notification appeared.
[Congratulations!]
[Your Territory has reached a designated milestone.]
[Exclusive reward for an Undead Lord unlocked.]
[Claim reward now?]
"Claim it."
A detailed blueprint materialized in her hand, its surface covered in blue magical lines. She turned it over and studied the design: an artificial river forming a complete ring around the Territory.
"A moat?"
She inspected the Blueprint.
[Blueprint: Gravewater Moat]
[Restriction: Undead Lord Exclusive]
[Description: Constructs a moat around the Territory. The moat automatically expands whenever the Territory grows. It contains Gravewater capable of dragging down anything that attempts to cross it and creates an absolute no-fly zone above its surface.]
[Gravewater: Any creature or object attempting to cross the moat will be forcibly submerged. Undead are immune. Living creatures that drown within the Gravewater will automatically be raised as a random type of undead.]
[Construction Cost: 3,000 units of Stone and 100 Mana Crystals.]
"It really is a moat." Lilith raised an eyebrow. "Simple function, ridiculous effect."
The no-fly zone was worth the most by far. Any airborne enemy trying to invade would be forced down to the ground — exactly where her undead held the decisive advantage.
"This is an excellent Structure."
Bonnie had zeroed in on the construction cost. She'd been managing Lilith's resources for days and knew the warehouse down to the unit. "Lili, you don't have enough Stone. I'll go back to my Territory and transfer some from the mines."
Lilith nodded, and Bonnie left to arrange it.
While they waited, Giles finally spoke up. "Boss—"
"Stop calling me that." She waved a hand. "You're my Vassal now. Call me Lilith, or just address me as your Lord."
Her name felt far too familiar for Giles to use. He took the safer option. "Yes, my Lord."
"Much better. What were you going to say?"
"My old Territory will stay intact for another eight hours so I can move resources out." He opened a System notification and shared it with her. "I was wondering whether you had time to visit it with me."
[Vassal Resource Transfer Notice]
[Your former Territory will remain active for eight hours.]
[During this period, you may return and manually transport resources.]
[Once you have transferred 30% of the Territory's total resources, or once the eight-hour period expires, the Territory will be permanently destroyed.]
The restriction looked needlessly harsh at first glance. Why couldn't the System just move the resources automatically? And why cap Giles at thirty percent?
Lilith turned it over for a moment — and then it clicked.
If every resource transferred automatically and without loss, powerful Lords could expand by collecting Vassals instead of gathering materials, and the whole progression system would warp around it: why build a Territory when you could simply absorb weaker ones?
The System wanted competition. It had no reason to allow that kind of shortcut.
The manual-transfer rule also killed any incentive to recruit distant Vassals purely to strip their stockpiles — unless the former Territory happened to sit close by, as Giles's did, recovering anything would be nearly impossible.
Lilith gave a dry laugh. "The System really thought this through."
In that case, no sense wasting the opportunity. "Once the moat is built, we'll visit your former Territory."
"All right."
Just then Bonnie finished the transfer from the Verdant Forest, and a large load of Stone landed in their shared storage.
[MochiByte: Lili, the resources are ready!]
"Perfect."
Lilith closed the message and selected the construction command.
[Construct Gravewater Moat?]
[Confirm.]
She accepted.
