17.Cold Distance and Misunderstandings
Bella's POV:
The following day was a sharp contrast to the light-hearted interactions we had the day before. William was cold, almost icily distant. As we left the apartment for the office, the silence between us was thick and uncomfortable. There was something undeniably frosty about his demeanor, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
When we arrived at the office, he barely acknowledged me. His usual curt remarks were replaced with a stony silence that only grew more palpable as the day went on. I tried to focus on my work, but the atmosphere was heavy with his palpable annoyance.
Around mid-morning, William called me into his office. I walked in, expecting a normal work discussion, but his attitude was colder than ever. He barely looked up from his desk as he spoke.
"Bella, we need to go over the project details," he said curtly, his tone flat and lacking any warmth. "I've noticed a few discrepancies that need addressing."
I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. "Sure, Sir. What discrepancies are we talking about?"
He rattled off a list of minor issues with the project, but his comments were laced with an underlying irritation that I couldn't quite place. Each critique felt harsher than necessary, and his demeanor was nothing like the playful, teasing William I had interacted with the day before.
After a while, I couldn't take it anymore. "William, is everything okay? You seem... different today. Is there something wrong?"
He continued to work in silence for a moment, his expression unreadable. I could tell he was seething, but he didn't answer right away. The coldness of his demeanor was unmistakable, and it was starting to get under my skin.
"Well?" I pressed, unable to keep my curiosity and concern at bay. "You're usually not this—"
"Not this what?" he interrupted abruptly, finally looking up. "Not this professional? Not this focused on the work? Maybe you're just not used to it."
His words stung, but I tried to stay composed. "No, I mean you're usually not this... distant. This rude. It's like there's a wall between us today."
William's eyes narrowed, and his jaw tightened. "Maybe I'm just not in the mood for your usual antics. Or maybe I'm just tired of the games."
"What games?" I asked, genuinely confused. "I don't understand what's going on."
He huffed, leaning back in his chair with an air of arrogance. "Oh, come on, Bella. Don't play innocent. You're the one who seems to have a lot going on outside of work. Like, I don't know, some secret romantic life."
The accusation in his voice was sharp, and it hit me like a jolt. "What are you talking about?"
William's gaze was piercing. "I overheard your phone call yesterday. The one where you were saying all those... affectionate things. 'I love you,' 'I miss you.' It's quite the revelation."
I felt a rush of confusion and surprise. "You heard that? But... but who was I talking to? How did you—"
"Why does it matter who you were talking to?" he cut in harshly. "It's clear you've got someone else in your life. And clearly, you're more interested in them than you are in me."
I tried to process his words, but the shock was overwhelming. "William, I don't understand. There's no one... I don't have a boyfriend. What are you talking about?"
He leaned forward, his expression a mix of anger and frustration. "Well, it's not really my problem, is it? It just seemed like you were pretty cozy with whoever it was. And now you're acting like nothing happened."
I was at a loss. "William, you've got it all wrong. I was talking to—" I hesitated, realizing it was pointless to explain when he was so clearly upset. "You're jumping to conclusions. I don't have anyone in my life. I don't know why you're acting like this."
His eyes were cold and dismissive. "Maybe it's just better if you focus on your 'romantic' life and leave me out of it."
"Okay, sir," I said calmly, trying to mask the confusion and hurt behind a veneer of professionalism. "I'll take care of the issues you mentioned."
Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heel and walked out of his office. My heart was heavy, and my mind was racing with questions. I couldn't understand why he was acting this way or why he'd overheard something that seemed to have upset him so much.
William's harsh words and cold demeanor were a shock, but I decided it was best not to engage further. There was no point in trying to explain something he clearly wasn't ready to understand. Instead, I took a deep breath and kept my composure.
As I made my way back to my desk, I tried to focus on my work, but the conversation kept replaying in my mind. I felt a strange mix of frustration and resignation. I wasn't sure what had triggered this sudden change in William, but it seemed pointless to try and force an explanation out of him when he was so clearly upset.
The rest of the day passed in a haze of strained normalcy. I did my best to stay focused on my tasks, but the tension between us loomed large. William continued to be distant and unapproachable, and I couldn't help but wonder if there was something I was missing.
Despite my best efforts to remain calm, the interaction left me feeling unsettled. I didn't know what had caused his sudden shift in attitude, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was on the receiving end of something that had nothing to do with me.
As the day went on, I couldn't help but feel that William had seriously overreacted. His sudden coldness and harsh words were unexpected and, frankly, unnecessary. I had no idea what had gotten into him, but he didn't even give me a chance to explain or clarify the situation.
It was clear to me that his reaction was more about his own issues than anything I had done. If he wanted to jump to conclusions without hearing me out, then that was his problem. I wasn't about to let his mood ruin my day or get tangled up in his drama.
I focused on my work and kept my distance. I had enough on my plate without adding William's misplaced anger to the mix. His behavior was frustrating, but it wasn't worth my energy. I decided that if he couldn't handle a little misunderstanding with some maturity, then it was best to let it go and move forward.
As the day wore on, it became increasingly clear to me that William's sudden shift in attitude wasn't just a fluke. It was a stark reminder of how he'd always been—cold, distant, and seemingly intent on making my life difficult. I couldn't help but think that maybe I was a fool for ever believing that things had settled down between us.
His overreaction and harsh comments only reinforced the notion that he had always hated me, beneath whatever surface-level interactions we'd shared. It was as if the small moments of warmth and camaraderie we'd experienced were nothing more than fleeting exceptions to the rule.
I felt a pang of disappointment, but mostly, I was frustrated with myself for letting my guard down. I had allowed myself to hope that things might change, that maybe, just maybe, we could get along without the usual tension. Clearly, I had been wrong.
As I left the office and headed home, I reflected on how naive I must have been to think that our relationship could improve. William's behavior today had proven that he was still the same unpredictable, antagonistic presence I had always known. It was a sobering realization, but one I needed to face.
So, I brushed off the disappointment and decided it was best to stick to my own path. If William wanted to remain in his cold, distant mode, then that was his choice. I had my own life to live and couldn't afford to be bogged down by his unresolved issues.
Later in the day, Tessa approached me with a curious look on her face. "Hey, Bella, have you noticed anything weird about William lately? He's been acting really off."
I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Not really. I haven't paid much attention."
Tessa seemed skeptical but let it slide. "Alright, if you say so. Want to grab a coffee? I could use a break from all this office drama."
I agreed, happy to have a change of scenery and a chance to unwind. We headed to the cafeteria, and as soon as we sat down with our coffees, the conversation shifted to lighter topics.
Tessa's easygoing nature and infectious laughter were a welcome distraction. We talked about everything from weekend plans to funny office anecdotes. The conversation flowed effortlessly, and I found myself genuinely enjoying the moment.
Despite the fun we were having, my mind kept drifting back to William. The way he'd acted had left a lingering confusion that I couldn't quite shake. I tried to focus on the present, to immerse myself in the warmth of Tessa's company, but thoughts of William kept creeping in.
Tessa noticed my distracted demeanor at one point and gave me a curious look. "You're awfully quiet. Everything okay?"
I forced a smile and shook my head. "Oh, it's nothing. Just had a weird day."
Tessa didn't press further, and we continued to chat and laugh. Her light-hearted energy was exactly what I needed, and I was grateful for the respite. Even though William's behavior was on my mind, I allowed myself to enjoy the moment with Tessa.
It was a small but meaningful escape from the tension that had been weighing on me, and I appreciated the opportunity to just be in the moment with a friend.
Worst part: I live with him.
