70. Kiera
KIERA
The house was quiet when Spencer held the door open for me. Whatever they’d gotten up to while we were at the movies, Dom must have sent them off to bed.
We walked in, tossing off our shoes in the foyer and heading for the living room where the TV was on. My body ached from our time at the drive-in, exhausted from taking both of my captors.
Dom looked up from her computer as we stepped into the room. Spencer went straight for the couch, plopping down and grabbing the TV remote. Laying out on the chaise, I joined Spencer and leaned into the cushions.
“How was the movie?” Dom asked.
The three of us just stared at each other, none of us remembering enough to recount the quality.
Rolling her eyes, Dom went back to her computer. “Horny bastards.”
Leo sat on the floor, propping her laptop up on the coffee table as she got back to compiling documents.
“How was your night?” I watched Dom closely.
She hummed. “Fine. Caleb opened up a little. We talked about his attitude. So hopefully he’ll cut that shit out.”
“Thanks.” Nodding, Spencer faintly smiled at Dom. Before anyone could say more, Spencer took to flipping through the channels. Frames flashed on the screen: history show, rerun of Friends, ad for hearing aids, the news.
Rubbing her forehead, Dom was clearly annoyed by the clipped audio interrupting her thoughts every two seconds.
Spencer stopped on the news for a second, just long enough for Leo to look up from her laptop and sigh. “This shit again?”
I’d gotten weirdly used to seeing my face on the news. Everyday, they rerun the same story without any new details. Which really meant that the four of us were doing our jobs.
Before Spencer could click the button, Dom waved her off. “Leave it on for a second.”
She did this sometimes, leaving the news on to make sure there weren’t new details. But it didn’t stop her from continuing to work on her laptop.
I always thought it was silly. As much as Isaac wanted to find me, he didn’t want more information in public hands. If he knew anything, he would just act on it.
Barely able to look at the screen, I picked at some skin around my nails. My chest hurt at the thought of thousands of households watching these same clips.
But that anxiety skyrocketed when a new banner with Breaking News flashed on the chyron.
Everyone looked up from their screens, brows furrowed, as the newscaster read out her lines. “Breaking news tonight in the missing person’s case for Kiera Tierney. Tech company Zeus Industries has released a drone-captured photograph of one of the woman’s kidnappers.”
“What the fuck?” Dom mumbled as a blurry picture of a helmet and armor-clad biker. But with their visor lifted. Underneath, Spencer’s dark brown eyes and long lashes made it obvious which of us it was.
The anchor continued as Spencer sat up. “The company has not released a name. But she has been identified and Kiera’s family is working with police to investigate the suspect. All known associates of the suspect are being tracked.”
“Fuck.” Leo’s chest heaved as she watched the screen.
“Fucking fuck.” Spencer’s head was in her palms. “We just brought the kids here. They’re not safe now.”
“None of us are safe now.” Dom growls. “They are known associates, Zeus was following them here. We’re all compromised.”
Movement by the living room door made my head lift. “Shit.”
Standing there, tall and confused as he looked at the picture of his aunt on the evening news, Caleb gawked. “Holy shit.”
