Kiera and Spencer’s eyes were glued to me, waiting for me to reveal the next twist is this fucked-up sequence of events.
“It’s a text, from The Oracle.” I swallowed hard. “Our next mission starts now.”
Despite the anxiety building in my own body, I could see the relief in Kiera’s. Whatever truth Kiera had learned before Spence and I appeared was clearly haunting her. And the thought of having something else to focus on — no matter how gory — seemed like exactly what she needed right now.
“Get me the fuck out of here.” Kiera moved toward the bedroom door, dust kicking up under her hurried steps. Clearly, it was exactly what she needed right now.
But when she approached, I didn’t budge as I met Spencer’s gaze. The text didn’t tell us to bring her. All it said was the mission was starting.
“What the fuck? Let’s go.” Kiera looked up at me, a new fire burning in those deep green eyes.
I held out a hand to her forearm, feeling the goosebumps that persisted on her skin. “Princess, I don’t know if it’s a good idea.” Even looking at her now, she was erratic. Our missions would require calm, considered action and I wasn’t sure our little hostage could be trusted to bring that energy.
Shaking her head, Kiera’s red locks shifted in a frenetic motion I hadn’t seen from her in a while. “Please, don’t leave me. You can’t leave me here. Please, please.”
My forehead wrinkled, pulling her in close and squeezing her to my chest. Spencer’s eyes were glued to my face, trying to have a conversation without uttering a word.
She was a wreck. Whatever had happened in this room had shaken her entire being.
I gritted my teeth. “I’m not leaving her like this.”
If we left her, she was a flight risk and I was starting to think that might be more of a problem than her fury directed at some sex-trafficker. We left her alone for ten minutes and she’d already wreaked havoc over the entire house.
With a shrug, Spencer smirked. “Dom said not to leave her alone.”
“Fuck what The Oracle wants.” Grumbling, I pulled Kiera off of me and met her teary eyes. “Get dressed. We have work to do, Princess.”
Like the good girl I knew she was, Kiera shifted past me and made her back to her room.
As I took in a deep breath, surely taking some asbestos into my lungs, my gaze caught on a picture frame. Wiped of dust, it lay on the bed where Kiera had been cornered by Dom.
Just as my feet were about to will me toward it, wanting to know what big secret was being kept from me, Spencer’s voice shook me. “Are we sure this is a good idea?”
I turned on my heels, my military training keeping my movements rigid. “There’s no winning here. Best we can do is keep her safe.”
“Close eyes tonight, Major.” Spencer nodded before disappearing out of the room and heading down the hallway.
Following closely behind, I tried to settle my mind.
With any luck, we would uncover Boy Prince tonight. But the success of this mission rested on my shoulders now. And there was no room for error.
