31. Robin
ROBIN
Later that night we were curled up on my couch killing zombies. Well… I was killing zombies, and Micah was following behind me trying not to die.
“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll protect you.”
“My hero,” he said with a chuckle as I launched a grenade at the group of zombies on his tail.
I couldn’t believe I’d come so close to losing him.
It had been a long time since I had seriously dated anyone, let alone falling in love with anyone.
Yet here we sat on the couch, his brow furrowed as he tried to keep up with me.
And there was no denying it. I was in love with him.
Absolutely fucking over the moon for him.
He was who I thought he was. I hadn’t been entirely wrong about him. He was the Micah from the band, from the field under the stars, and the one who accepted me as I was. That had never changed.
“Hey Micah, can I ask you something?”
He paused the game and set the remote on the table before turning to me. “Anything.”
“Ariel may have mentioned that you started helping out around Lantern House.”
He nodded as he took my foot in his hand and messaged it.
“Why?” I asked.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do. You weren’t wrong about that place needing help.
While I don’t have your hacker Robin Hood skills, and have a middle school teacher’s salary, there was only so much I can do.
I can change tires, fix leaky sinks and buy dinner. I really didn’t do that much.”
I was filled with awe as I looked at him. “And you did all that never knowing if I would know and take you back.”
“I didn’t do it for you.”
I cocked my head and waited for him to continue.
“I did it because it was the right thing to do. I knew they might not get the money anymore once my parents found out, and I just wanted to help them.”
I launched myself at him. He tried to catch me with open arms, but instead we fell to the floor in a puddle of limbs and laughter.
I was on my back as he propped himself up at my side looking over me. He brushed the messy hair from my forehead and dropped a sweet kiss to his lips. I cupped his cheek and ran my thumb over the stubble forming there.
“I love you.”
It was a simple fact. I loved him in a way I didn’t know how to fully articulate. Months ago that would have terrified me, but not anymore.
Micah is safe in the best way possible. Not only that but he is a good man. I never should have doubted him or myself.
We made love right there on my living room floor in the light of Project Undead.
It wasn’t a life everyone dreamed of… but for me, it was perfect.
