Sneak Peek - Chapter One

Adam

Louise! Where’s the Johnston file?

I run my hand through my dark hair in frustration.

“Louise? I can’t find the Johnston file. Where is it?”

“Adam, no need to bellow. It’s right here.”

I watch as my ever-efficient admin locates the file on my sideboard and hands it to me.

“Thank you, Louise.”

“Adam, the new admin starts today. She’ll be here any minute. If you continue to sound that grumpy, she’ll probably run for the hills the minute she arrives.” I heard the admonition in her voice.

“Well, as you know. I don’t like change.”

“I know, Adam, but all last week, Isabella was here training, and I think you’re going to like her. She’s a very quick learner, and she even made some recommendations on filing. She was clearly the best candidate for the job.”

“Harrumph,” I say noncommittally.

“Now, Adam, you said I could hire whomever I thought would work out for the best since you had to leave at the last minute. I truly believe that Isabella is the perfect administrative assistant for you. She’s quite organized, and I think she’ll work out perfectly. That is if you don’t run her off her first day on the job.”

“I’ll try not to, but I make no promises. She’ll have to get used to my moods sooner or later.”

“Yes, Adam. But let’s strive for later if you don’t mind.”

I absently nod as I skim over the folder in my hand. I really don’t have time to worry about making the new hire comfortable or not. I have more important things on my mind.

I sit down in my office chair and continue to read over the Johnston folder. I make a few notes on the inside of the folder. Soon, I’m lost in the case, trying to decide on our next move. It’s an important case, and we can’t afford to make any mistakes this close to trial.

“Adam, I’d like you to meet your new administrative assistant, Isabella Navarro.”

I look up and see my current admin, Louise Matthews, an older woman who finally decided to retire. She has been my admin for the last ten years.

I look up but don’t rise from my chair. I’m surprised to see a young, attractive woman being introduced as my new admin. She steps into my office and fearlessly approaches my desk. The first thing I notice is her easy smile. I run my eyes over her dark hair, which is pulled back into some sort of sleek, elegant chignon without a hair out of place. Her eyes are as dark as her hair and brows. Her olive-toned skin is flawless, and her makeup is professional and subtle. She’s dressed in a woman’s black power suit with perfectly matched shoes. I feel my body begin to harden in reaction to her presence. What the hell? I don’t typically have this type of reaction to someone I’ve just met.

“Hello, Mr. Adam. I’m Isabella. I look forward to working as your administrative assistant,” she states calmly and quietly.

I blink as I’m used to people acting timid around me. Instead, this new hire looks totally at ease in her new position. I shift uncomfortably in my seat. I look over at Louise, who gives Isabella an approving and fond smile.

“I’m sure Louise is doing a good job of teaching you the ropes,” I tell the girl roughly. Her smile never dims; instead, she gives me another quick nod.

“I brought you a cup of coffee. Louise showed me how you prefer it.” I watch as she sets the cup of coffee down on my desk.

“Thanks,” I mutter gruffly. I reach out and take a sip. I give an approving grunt as the cup of brew is exactly how I like it.

Maybe, just maybe, this new hire will work out, and my body will stop reacting to her in a couple of days. I watch as Louise and Isabella turn to leave me to my work. I’m a founding partner in the law firm of Franklin and Miller. I am Franklin. Adam Franklin, to be precise.

I work long and often erratic hours, and I need an admin who is willing to work the hours that I do. I shrug as I’ve worked with Louise for so long that I know I can trust her to select a replacement that will have the same qualities that she has.

It’s taken years of hard work and many hours to reach this point in my life. I’ve never had time for a family or serious relationships. I’m more of a love’em and leave’em type of guy. My firm and my career have always come first in my life. I don’t see that ever-changing, as I love the adrenaline rush I get when I’m working on an important case. I love the law and the challenges it represents.

By the time I look up again, it’s growing dark outside. I glance at the clock to see that it’s almost six.

“Louise?”

Isabella comes to the door.

“Mr. Adam? Louise left about an hour ago. Is there something I can get for you?”

“I need the case file on Gardner against Gardner,” I state impatiently, “I didn’t hear Louise leave,” I state grumpily. I really don’t like change.

“I know where that case file is. Let me get it for you,” she then quietly leaves and comes back a few moments later with the case file.

“Thanks,” is all that I mutter as I take the proffered folder.

I hear my office door close quietly as she leaves the room.

Without another thought, I continue my work for another half an hour. Finally, I’m at a stopping point, so I gather my briefcase, stuff some folders into it, and get ready to leave. I open my office door to see Isabella sitting at her desk, going over some emails.

“You’re still here?”

“Yes, sir. I wanted to read over some emails to get up to speed on some of the more important cases.”

“Okay, well, feel free to go,” I say dismissively. Then I wait as she gathers up her purse and shuts down her computer.

I hold the door open for her to proceed me out of the office.

“Have a good night, Mr. Adam,” she calls as she walks toward a small car in the back of the parking garage while I stop at my SUV. I wait to confirm her car starts without any issues, and we both pull out of the garage and into the late city traffic.

When I turn west, she continues driving south.
