30. Rogue
“Everything okay?”
I shove my cell back into my cut and stare at Grim. When I remain silent, he lifts his hands again and repeats his questions.
Shaking my head, I reply. “No. Skye’s grandma has pneumonia.”
“Isn’t she in a nursing home?” I nod, and Grim continues. “Then I’m sure she’s getting very good care.”
“Yeah, probably. She’s at Guardian Springs, and we’ve always heard good things about them. That’s the one nursing home in the area not employing corrupt assholes.”
Grim smiles, and it changes his entire demeanor. Not many people get to see this side of him, and I’m glad I’m one of the lucky ones.
“If you’re worried, why don’t you meet Skye there?” he suggests.
“I couldn’t.”
“Why? She’s your woman, and she needs you. That means you go.”
“If she wanted me there, she’d have asked me to meet her,” I insist.
“If you’re gonna make this thing with Skye permanent, you’ve got a lot to learn.”
“And you’re an expert?” I counter.
Grim scrunches his face, and it’s all I can do not to laugh outright at the expression. “Violet’s trained me well.”
“Clearly.” I take a deep breath and consider what he’s telling me to do. “What if I get there, and she’s mad that I showed up? It’s not like we’ve talked about meeting each other’s family or anything yet.”
“Rogue, she’s met your family. All of us.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do. And I’m still telling you to go. Trust me.”
“I don’t know,” I hedge.
“Have I ever led you down a bad path?”
I think about the day I came home to a kidnapped sinner in my living room. Most people would consider that being led down a bad path. But I’m not most people.
“No, you haven’t.”
“Then go.”
Nodding, I whirl around and head toward the elevator. I take out my cell to send a quick text.
Me: I’ll meet you there. If ur not okay with that tell me
My phone pings as I reach the garage.
Skye: I appreciate that. Thanks
Me: See ya soon
Just over an hour later, I’m parking my Harley at Guardian Springs. I scan the lot for Skye’s vehicle, but I don’t see it. I don’t panic though because I’m pretty sure there’s another lot on the other side of the building, and I’m sure her car’s there.
When I walk through the double doors and into the lobby, the receptionist lifts her head from the computer and smiles.
“Hi. Who are you here to see?”
Shit. I don’t know her grandma’s name.
“I’m actually meeting my girlfriend here,” I explain. “Her grandmother is a resident, and she got a call earlier today saying her grandma was very sick.”
“And who’s your girlfriend?”
“Skye Summers.”
“Oh, Skye is super sweet,” the woman gushes.
“She is.”
“Then you’re here to see Patricia Summers.” She glances at her computer screen and taps on the mouse several times. “Sir, no one called Skye today.”
My stomach plummets. “That’s impossible.”
“I’m afraid not, sir. Patricia isn’t even sick.” Her expression falls. “Well, not with anything beyond the Alzheimer’s.”
“She doesn’t have pneumonia?”
“No, sir.”
“And you’re absolutely positive that no one on the staff contacted Skye?”
She double-checks before nodding. “Yes, sir. No calls have been made to Skye Summers since her weekly update last Monday.”
“And she’s not here visiting?”
“No, sir. I’ve been here all day, and Skye hasn’t come in.”
I rush outside, pulling my cell out as I run so I can call Soul.
“Yo,” he says when he answers. “Grim told me what’s going on. How’s Skye’s gra?—”
“She’s not here,” I blurt.
“Who’s not where?”
“Skye isn’t here at the nursing home, and the woman at the desk insists that no one called her, nor has she visited her grandma today.”
“What?”
“Something’s wrong, Soul.” I take a shuddering breath. “I can feel it. Something is very wrong.”
“We’ll find her. Why don’t you start back this way, and I’ll have Jez and Fort get on it?”
“Yeah, okay.”
“Rogue, you didn’t see her car or anything on your way there? I mean, if something happened, like she broke down, you’d have passed her.”
“No, I didn’t see it. And I wouldn’t necessarily because there are several ways from the clubhouse to Mountain Springs. I have no idea which route she’d take.”
“Okay. Take a deep breath and get back here. I’ll handle things on this end until you arrive.”
“Thanks, Prez.”
“It’s what we do.”
“Yeah, I know. But…”
“She’ll be okay, Rogue,” Soul insists. “We’ve faced worse than this and come out on the other side. She will too.”
I nod despite the fact that he can’t see me.
“Be careful, and I’ll see you soon.”
“Right. See ya.”
